Announcing the New Character Sheet for D&D 2024

Do we know at this stage if current API's will work with the new character sheet ? I use a lot of scripts in my games so wondering if these will still be available when the new sheet launches or will there be some time while API's are adapted or updated

According to the Roll20 blog, that is on the development road map for Sept 17, the full release date. I'm curious as well. I doubt that anything written specifically for the D&D 5th Edition by Roll20 Sheet will work, and more than it would work for the Shaped D&D sheet or any other sheet, There will doubtless be transition pains. And of course, Mods that do not affect sheets (such as Token mod) should not be impacted at all.

I have the same doubts as you and have concerns that a lot of functionality provided by scripts will be lost unless script writers like yourself have the appetite to create new versions of scripts to be compatible with the new character sheet. I guess there is also the potential that some scripts might become redundant due to what the new character sheet may offer. Case of having to wait and hope for the best !!

This would happen with any new character sheet. And yeah, it will be an interesting time.

Yes, the intent of the D&D 2024 sheet is to be compatible with both D&D 5e and D&D 2024. 

I submitted this as feedback, but as someone who uses the Alternative DMG rules for Skill Checks (allowing variable abilities), I would love to be able to just click on the ability name in the skill list and have it prompt me for a different one. I see I can now override it with the gear icon, but that's a lot of steps to ask a player to go through on the fly.

No, there are no plans to remove the existing character sheet from Roll20.

Both the 2014 and 2024 books will be within one compendium (similar to how Pathfinder 2e /Pathfinder 2e Core works), so you'll be able to access both in a campaign.

Will i be able to create 2014 characters with the 2024 sheet?

Yes! You'll be able to create characters using either ruleset with the new 2024 sheet and builder.

Will i be able to continue to manage my existing 2014 characters with the 2024 sheet?

We are working on tools to convert your characters from the old sheet to the new sheet, if it's desired, as some 2024 functionality will not work with the old sheet.

Will monsters, spells, feats, etc. From the 2014 sources be usable and manageable with the 2024 sheet?

Yes! You'll be able to utilize 2014 items, weapons, monsters, feats, etc. with the 2024 sheet, and in some cases you'll get additional functionality if you use the new sheet.

Are the new D&D 2024 books any good?

Some of the Roll20 team have gotten the chance to read advanced copies of the new Player’s Handbook. We think it is the biggest and best version of D&D ever made. (No really, we don’t have to be Mark Hamill promoting the Last Jedi.)

Will this allow players to share custom spells? sometimes GM's homebrew spells or allow homebrew spells and since they cannot be drag & dropped having the spells be able to be moved between sheets or heck even a homebrew vault would be interesting.

Okay, did a quick test:

1. Many features are mislabeled regarding their source. (for example, a feat for DnD might be labeled for Esper Genesis (Which I also own)).
2. Races: Needs to be clearer as to the game system they are for.
3. Actually, it would be great if we could choose to view one particular game system...as related to the character sheet.
4. Spells: Totally not accurate. I did multiclass Cleric 12, Sorcerer 8. It only let me choose spells for one class, and it did not add the subclass spells at all (I chose Tempest Cleric).

Outside of these, I really like this new sheet.

Just Seen that the beta is now up and after spending 30 minutes looking into this sheet I would not list this as beta ready.
The sheet is quite frankly unusable for numerous reasons.

• The first and most glaring one I see is the layout. There is so much wasted space to the point where I cant see the most basic information needed to run or play a game efficiently. (img at bottom of post) 
• Everything to edit is hidden behind sub menu after sub menu with poor labeling.
• You cant even set a characters Max HP, you can only Override.
• Weapon Damage roll does not apply ability mod. (There is no option for Finesse)
• Being unable to put anything that is not a value into entry boxes preventing easy separation of multiple source modifiers. (example: if i have 2 different sources that provide me a + 1 to a save I am unable to enter 1+1 i have to list a a single 2.) This will also prevent setting up abilities like unarmored def to automatically scale when appropriate as you cannot call the corresponding ability score.

As I go on into looking into the sheet and keep finding things that need to be improved or missing that I will be putting into a new feedback form.

For now I personally cannot recommend this new beta as it is heading away from being user friendly way more so than the current 5e sheet.

I regretfully have to concur.

I played with this for about an hour this morning. I have found the layout to be no more compact than it was in Alpha, requiring scrolling or revealing panes even for the simplest of tasks like rolling a skill check or a casting a spell. Everything is hidden behind scrolling, tabs, gears or flipdowns. There simply isn't enough space on the screen (and I use a pretty big ultrawide monitor) to allow for easy play. I applaud the general esthetic, but I find it to be obstructive to play. The interface is getting in the way of itself. I don't see any of the changes in this respect that myself and others in this and the previous thread have expressed concern over.

Things like sheet logic are a different matter, as I assume they will be fixed as time goes on. Currently, however, it is possible to drag in and equip multiple suits of armor for example, continually boosting AC. The old sheet would warn you if you had duplicates. This is a very easy mistake for users to make. I am assuming that bugs like this will be fixed as the sheet progresses, but the lack of progress on a usable interface is disheartening enough to make me concerned if it will actually be addressed. Having to scroll, expose the skills tab, scroll down to say, "survival", then scroll back up to the top of the tab, click it to spells, and then scroll back down two or three times to cast a 4th level spell is simply onerous.

I have to agree about the useability issues described above. This is not a sheet that I would ever want to use. Several of my players experience enough confusion with the three tabs of the current D&D 5e by Roll20 sheet. I don't want to even think about talking them through how to navigate this design, seeing as how cumbersome it is even to me (and I learned to navigate some pretty convoluted UIs in my work!).

The size of this sheet's elements and the spacing make me think that it's geared towards touch-screen devices, but I don't see how players could pay attention to what's on the VTT while having to flip through various screens to accomplish anything. Talk about breaking immersion!

The only good thing I can say about the new sheet is that it's readable. But, that's about it. I agree with what others have said - it's too confusing, and too unhelpful for play. TBH, this new sheet is very close to something unusable that would probably force my group to want to abandon Roll20 and move to another VTT system.

Let me add that the new character builder is absolutely, positively, TERRIBLE. There is nothing about it that I like.

The character builder broke completely when I added a class, so I tried just making an NPC. It's an incredibly arduous process compared to the 2024 sheet, with everything hidden behind multiple edit buttons or drop-downs. Selecting the Edit button for condition immunities just opens the damage immunities box. And there's no way (as far as I can see) to add things like additional on-hit effects (e.g., a Con save against poison from a giant poisonous snake bite).

There is a LOT of work needed on this.

I just tried creating a character with the new sheet. Basics: tiefling Warlock. Aside from the new sheet having terrible graphics and usability, the character builder: failed to apply the racial ability score bonuses, failed to add the racial spell I would get at first level, failed to ask me my patron, bonds, flaws, ideals, personality traits, or whether I wanted the standard equipment or not, and didn't allow me to choose from all the available spells ("Hex", among others, was left out).  This is more "alpha" than "beta". 

I wanted to chime in and add, yes, the sheet really needs some design streamlining, and I hope the developers are listening to the feedback. There are too many pages, tabs, and hidden features to open/close and toggle between and it's going to alternatively aggravate and confuse players in my group. For player characters we could really use 1 comprehensive summary sheet where everything can be referenced, even if editing those values requires drilling down into individual subsections.

I found the NPC sheet very frustrating to work with, like other posters above me have mentioned. It takes much longer to create an NPC now, given we have to bounce through so many pages, dialogue boxes, and drop-down lists. 

Take a look at their own screenshot on the character builder, it only shows half the sheet, you need to scroll for the rest!

Roll20 Characters

I too found the Builder difficult to use. Trying select race species, and other options was very frustrating with the very small scroll section provided, forcing me to scroll up and down multiple times to change the option and read the text.  I gave up when I got to background. 

Any way I could be allowed to click a pop out link, or stretch that section, if I want to see more info?

I have to agree with a lot of the points of complaint already made but I'll offer some other things that I have not seen mentioned yet.

With the 2014 sheet, when you use the sheet to make a roll, you can up arrow in the chat to see what was rolled. It may only have @{CharName|AttributeName} or it may have the full roll template made. Either way this was very helpful when creating macros and seeing what roll templates were used. The 2024 sheet doesn't seem to have this functionality. As such it seems to take away from the customization options available.

Without an Attributes & Abilities tab, which I have asked about previously so I won't go on and on about but I would stress how important that tab is to be able to run games using things like Macro Mules and such, but without access I attempted to use the API to inspect the workings of a character. Even with the API I was thwarted. Running a ScriptCard to show all Roll20 Attributes for a character resulted in only some amount of store, builder, backup, appState, and updateId being displayed. 2014 characters have a huge number of Attributes associated with them so this was surprising.

This led to attempts to use the current system @{selected|AttributeName} but things like @{selected|strength_mod} and @{selected|Strength} all failed to produce anything but null results.

So I agree with a lot of the points made in previous posts about the layout and design but I wanted to add disappointment in my inability to even gauge how much change would be required for automations already built. Even with API access, it seems difficult to get information that would be required to reproduce even a fraction of the automation I have for the 2014 sheet, so this Beta run is disappointing since I cannot seem to get a peek behind the curtin of how this sheet and its characters are setup. I am Pro subscriber mainly for the ability to customize and automate via the API and so far this Beta sheet has proven to be a complete black box.

This is a concerning approach that I've seen in another character sheet on roll20, to take away options and access from users. It's baffling to me - it's hardly away from anyone that users can extend the character sheet's utility to suit the needs of their own table - both for customization and for accessibility. The ability to play your way is one of the biggest advantages of tabletop roleplaying, so why design a character sheet so hard against that principle?

This is one of the reasons why a lot of people have abandoned Roll20 for other VTT systems. Other VTTs are far more configurable and customizable than Roll20 was, and they are even more so now that Roll20 has apparently decided to block user customization.

Is there a way in the new character sheets to see what the dice was rolled without going to chat?

Example, I have ny sheet open in a new tab Fullscreen as Inwas checking some spells and click a spell attack, can I see the roll without needing to tab to the main window?

In some of the promo videos for the new sheets it showed a dice icon and a roll log on the right side.

This is stuff i would like to have for the D&D 5e 2024 sheet

I am not a Dev, but I do not expect them to update the old sheet to the 2024 stuff. 
However, it should be able to run 2024 content without an issue, although you may need to do some things to manually set it up. 

The biggest issue will be exhaustion, but that is already doable. 

So it looks like one can change the default character sheet of an existing game to the 2024 version but there is no point in doing so as it brings up choices of starting new, even for an NPC sheet that is already pre-populated. I suppose that makes sense in terms of the different sheet's "bones" but there is no point to having that choice in the Game Settings of the game.

I can see it more appropriate in a brand new game where everything is added new (either dragged from the compendium or created from scratch like a PC). One thing I haven't tested is creating a new game from a module.

The possibility to transfer Sheet from 2014 to new is scheduled for the full release on September 17th apparently.

Another issue I'm having is when clicking a spell that has an attack attached to it, the spell appears on chat and it has the option for it to show its description. But nothing appears. Should be linked to the spell's description.

I had a problem with a Fighter I created using the Builder.
He was proficient with Heavy Armor but he had all disadvantage when wearing one (a Chain Mail +1 I took from the compendium), so I tried to delete the disadvantage directly on the item but eveytime I delete it, then save and exit, it comes back.
But I found how to resolve the problem : I deleted the proficency in Heavy armor, and put it back again, and now it works.
Maybe it was a problem with the builder ?

Edit : It's the same for ALL proficiencies. The attack roll for weapons did't have the proficiency bonus. I deleted and had back proficiencies and all is good now.

First off, loving the 2024 sheets! I realize some of this might have already been said but below are some bugs I noticed and some things I would like to see in the final product. I noticed this all while building my 3 players' level 20 characters on the new sheet. I am using Chrome.

Bugs

• When adding currency (specifically I gave my players 300K gold), the total inventory weight shows only the currency weight regardless of how much your other items wear. To solve this I have been checking the box to ignore coin weight.
• When adding a Modifier -> New Defense, and changing the drop-down from damage to condition (or vice versa), the Defense drop-down disappears. It only reappears if you change the Defense Type drop-down selection.
• When adding a Modifier that gives immunity to a condition, the immunity does not show up on the main character sheet screen, but does show up in the Defenses settings menu labeled as "unknown"
• Items in character inventories do not retain their cost when reloading the game.
• If a spell does not have an attack or save linked to it, there is no option to label which class the spell is attached to.
• When adding a spell that uses a save, the class associated with the save defaults to whatever is listed in your character levels...but is not a real option. For instance, it defaults to cleric but licking the drop-down for class shows none and Cleric (WIS) as options. If you do not select Cleric (WIS), then it is not retained and must be added again by editing the spell and then editing the attack details of the spell.

Quality-of-Life Requests

• If possible, a way to convert 5e 2014 roll20 character sheets to 5e 2024 roll20 character sheets.
• When having multiple sources of resistance to something, it is listed multiple times on the main screen. It would be nice only to see each option once in the list, but then be able to see every instance of the resistance in the defense settings menu.
• Add an option to transfer inventory items to other player characters, sort of like a trade system. Useable by DM and the controlled-by player.
• Move the cancel button to the far left of menus, instead of right next to the save button. (I know skill issue, but I have misclicked a few times now and it doesn't save your work.)
• Add the Compendium's drag-and-drop features (I know you are most likely working on this)
• Add a DM's Compendium where we can add our hand-jammed custom feats, items, spells, and such to be reused within our campaigns without needing to type it all out over and over. For those of us who run homebrew content, this makes it far easier to set up new characters.
• Turn combat, Inventory, Spells, and features into docks where each item can be dragged and dropped to rearrange the order. Currently, it seems the combat menu, skill menu, and features menu are in alphabetical order while the inventory is in the order of how you entered the items. 
• Add an option for whether a feature resource rests on long rest or short rest (currently only short rest)
• Add an option for feature resources to reset after a specific number of rests. (for instance, the Cleric's divine intervention which resets after 7 days)
• Add the chat link bubble to items within a player's inventory.
• Add "from a non-magical source" and "from a magical source" as an option for resistances and immunities.
• Add modifiers that can add/remove movement speed (for instance a set of boots that increase movement by 5)
• Add modifiers that can add/remove a number of leveled spell slots (for instance a ring that adds an additional 1st-level spell slot)
• Add an option for difficult terrain to the Immunity list.
• Add a column on the inventory screen that shows a preview of the item description (that way you don't have to open each of your items to remember which one has the ability you are looking for) 
• Add an option for spells to be upcasted without having to roll manually, See how D&DBeyond handles this and try to replicate/improve on it. (even if there was a way to label the spell's damage we might be able to make this work)
• Add an option to collapse/expand spell lists by level. This just reduces scrolling for classes that have a lot of spells to search through.
• Add an option to select what type of damage is done with effects added on the combat tab.
• Add containers to the inventory to help organize things. Let us name the containers and set maximum encumbrance values for the containers as well
• Please bring back the NPC display from the previous character sheet. I like the layout provided as an editor....but having something more akin to the monster sheets from official books was way easier to use.
• NPC sheets don't seem to be drag and drog for macros anymore?
• Macros using &{template:default} no longer work

I know that is a decent amount of things in one post, but I figure it would help to have all the information consolidated =)

I dislike how much space the new sheets waste with paddings and spacings.

A freshly created NPC sheet on a 1440p screen immediately shows a scrollbar because the sheet is more than double the height available on screen. Thats imho bad UX design. As a DM and player I like to have as much information available without having to go through tabs, submenus and scrollable content. Looking at the screenshot below, there is so much wasted space.

Same goes for the character sheets as well.

I realize that Attributes are not yet exposed on the new sheet, though new ones can be created. Please ensure that when old-sheet characters are transmogrified in, any previous user-defined attributes are also converted and exposed. I can't test the current status of this, but have noticed that some abilities are not functioning on imported characters, since they reference attributes that did not come through with the sheet.

Also, making attribute editing modal is frustrating. In classic sheets you can enter or change information in multiple attributes and fields quite rapidly.

By making them modal, one must click the attribute edit button, edit the field or fields desired, scroll down (because the save button is below the scroll (this is a problem throughout the Roll20 interface), save, and then repeat the process for every attribute.

Currently in the classic interface, all macro buttons and token action buttons share this behavior: If you shift click on them, the code opens up in edit mode, regardless if it reside on a sheet or is in the macro collections. Please retain this behavior. Currently in Jumpgate, shift clicking will open the sheet. The user still has to switch the sheet to the A&A section, click the Abilities subsection, scroll through all abilities to find the one you want (a heavily automated campaign could have dozens or hundreds on a Macro Character Sheet, click the edit button, before they can even start making a change. This is slower by at least a literal order of magnitude.

Question regarding items.   Will it be possible on this character sheet to create links to handouts via the [brackets]?  I ask because I enjoy handing out homemade items to players via handouts.  A lot of premade modules have these sort of handouts, which gave me the idea.  I know my handmade items won't automatically plug into character sheets like items from the compendium, but it would be really nice for players to be able to write their items down on their character sheet using the [brackets] so they could just click and see the items from their journal.   ... Just wondering.

I had issues with adding a class to the character builder, attempted to resize the sheet a bit hoping that roll20 allowed for their message system to be seen, and grimaced at the thought of using this sheet with maps.  The sheet is big.  It's easily readable if you know what you're doing, but the choices make it cumbersome to explain to new players.  I just wanted to play with the thing a bit because I just pre-ordered the 2024 rule books. 

I think the worst thing I was dealing with on the roll20 character sheet was lag.  The new sheet lagged badly and that was without maps and a chat box open.  I've had my whole compendium lag out and  not load (and have had to reload roll20 a few times because of the material I bought).  I really don't want that from what should be a small reference sheet for players that they need to use constantly.  I understand why my 4 monstrous compendiums lag when I attempt to read monster titles and descriptions while setting up encounters for my campaign.  On the other hand, character sheets shouldn't be lagging since they are used constantly.   

Is the new sheet format available for module NPC sheets yet? I created a new Shattered Obelisk game with the new sheet and none of the creatures have character sheets.

I am not sure where exactly this bug lies but I have a Jumpgate test game using this new 2024 sheet and when dragging a Monster Manual Orc from the Compendium, every attack they have is missing the damage die. All attacks give a flat +3 bonus which is the Orc's strength modifier.

Like I said, I'm not sure if this is related to Jumpgate or this new sheet. If I use a non-Jumpgate game with the 2014 sheet, dragging the Monster Manual Orc from the compendium the attacks have a damage die associated with them and roll damage as I would expect.

Not sure if others are having this issue as well.

Character Sheets created in Jumpgate Games do not update properly if values are changed! This is known by the Devs and might be the reason for your Problem also... NON-Jumpgate games are NOT affected. So as a workaround, create a legacy game (non jumpgate) and create the characters there. After creating, use the Vault to transfer them over to your Jumpgate game... Annoying? YES, but at least it works!

Like I said, I'm not sure if this is related to Jumpgate or this new sheet. If I use a non-Jumpgate game with the 2014 sheet, dragging the Monster Manual Orc from the compendium the attacks have a damage die associated with them and roll damage as I would expect.

Not sure if others are having this issue as well.
