If you’re still running your campaign on Roll20’s original (Legacy) VTT, you’re missing out on some massive performance improvements… not to mention updated and new tools and features that have been designed based on years of feedback to make your campaigns the best they can be. Jumpgate is our new and improved VTT engine, released last year and built from the ground up to provide a better experience for players and GMs. With a cleaner interface and streamlined navigation, exclusive features, and a modern overhaul of decades-old code, it’s a major upgrade built to serve as the tabletop of the future. Upgrading Your Game Converting your game to Jumpgate is fast, easy, and risk-free. When you upgrade, we automatically create a backup copy of your Legacy game that will live in your Game Library, in case you want to go back. (We don’t think you will… but we’re happy to provide some peace of mind if it makes it easier to take the leap!) Worried about Compatibility? Don’t be. Your Character Sheets (official, community, custom), maps, and Marketplace content aren’t impacted by the VTT engine. You will gain the ability to use multiple D&D sheets in your games, if you want to explore 2014 and 2024 side by side or use both! You retain complete control of which sheet(s) you use to play. Modules, compendiums, and dynamically lit maps will all work the same – plus, you’ll gain access to updated customizability. Think of the Gains Everyone, including free users, will benefit from faster games and better performance. GMs, in particular, can look forward to dozens of quality-of-life updates that make building and running games easier and more intuitive. From better panning and scrolling to streamlined menus and better access to often-used settings, our improvements are a direct result of YOUR feedback. Plus, subscribers will enjoy a new Dynamic Lighting interface, a Foreground Layer, Reactions that allow more discovery and surprises in-game, and more features in development now that will exclusively live in the new VTT. The sooner you upgrade, the less drastic the transition from Legacy will feel. How to Upgrade From Game Settings, click Convert to Jumpgate Confirm on the pop-up, and voila! You’re done! Watch how HERE .  Your game is now ready to go! Join the overwhelming majority of GMs and players enjoying the tabletop of the future, and stay in touch to keep sending ideas our way. Jumpgate is easier to update and improve, and we’re always looking for the next cool project to make your games better.

I switched at the beginning of the calendar year. It feels very limiting to go back.
I'm still having some issues with duplicate tokens, frozen tokens and performance on large maps (moreso than with legacy). Most of the issues can be resolved with temporarily switching  maps, but it's annoying when it happens mid-encounter. My players who use Macs or Firefox have the most problems.

Hi Rick A.,  Are you using D&D 5e 2024 by Roll20 in your game?  There was an issue with the new Condition Sync for that sheet that was causing significant performance issues.

No, I'm staying well clear of the D&D 5e by Roll20 (2024) sheet. All of our games use the D&D 5e by Roll20 (2014) sheet. We've been dealing with those issues ever since I converted my game to Jumpgate months ago. Edit: Those 2 character sheets really need short-form designation or acronyms. :\ Gauss said: Hi Rick A.,  Are you using D&D 5e 2024 by Roll20 in your game?  There was an issue with the new Condition Sync for that sheet that was causing significant performance issues.
I am experiencing the same thing in my campaigns (Legacy 2014, Jumpgate) . for 12429316 Rick A.  I'm still having some issues with duplicate tokens, frozen tokens and performance on large maps (moreso than with legacy). Thanks Hultz and Rick. Have either of you reported those bugs from within your Jumpgate games? Providing our team with not only a description of the issue, but also the link to your game(s) is extremely helpful to our team when trying to reproduce bugs and solve for them.
Hi Jimmy, Yes, I've posted reports (tickets 301295, 302209, 319589, and have had a few conversations (via email) with Miles about 301295. I've used both help tickets and the "Report a Bug" link that you showed in the screen shot; I had better responses using help tickets. The answers I've gotten were that these issues are being worked on. Miles had a few suggestions for me to try with my game in particular (he's been really good when it comes to communicating with me), but they haven't worked.  jimmy said: Thanks Hultz and Rick. The 2024 sheet is usually good enough for me given any context. I only ever type out the whole thing "D&D 5e (2024) Sheet" because I have it on a hotkey...

Since the actual topic here is Jumpgate though, it's probably only fair to link the Jumpgate Quality of Life Feature Improvements page on the Help Center. I won't go back to Classic anytime soon. It really is loads better.
I just tried my first session with Jumpgate and encountered numerous bugs including: 1) Players vision being greater than the parameters i had set  2) PLayer reporting being a different location to the location i could see them in!  3) Old dynamic lighting lines no longer aligning to to the picture 4) Dynamic lines appearing in the Object layer We tried to make it work for 20 minutes then gave up. Im frustrated that a map that i had put together in Jumpgate cant be Transmorged to the legacy version.. I need to start from scratch. Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I dont see an easier way of reporting to you! Alan - 3193 hours of play time.
I seem unable to see the Convert to Jumpgate button from my top right Cog? there is no Project Jumpgate Section with the button for Convert to Jumpgate between Dark Mode and Token Marker Position?
Gustav said: I seem unable to see the Convert to Jumpgate button from my top right Cog? there is no Project Jumpgate Section with the button for Convert to Jumpgate between Dark Mode and Token Marker Position? It sounds like your game might already be upgraded. On your My Games page, does that campaign have a green jumpgate tag? If not, please send me a private message with a link to your game, and I'll have the team take a look. Hi Alan,  That's not an ideal experience at all, and all issues I've not yet had reported to me, so I'm glad you brought it up here so we can take a look. If you've already submitted a support ticket or bug report, can you let me know the number so I can escalate it? If you haven't yet, can you send me a private message with a link to your game?
Just a comment... refresh my memory. Jumpgate  dramatically  improved upload speeds, yeah? Or was that just me going from "free" to "paid" ? Normally I'm pretty hard on R20, but so far Jumpgate has been kinda nice. Page organization... works. As in, it actually works. I am all astonishment. Now, my utilization of Jumpgate has been fairly primitive. I don't use API or macros. I didn't use Dynamic Lighting when I moved to Jumpgate. I made  multiple  copies of my game when I made the shift, just in case. But overall my players didn't notice any change at all, and I appreciate the UI improvements. (except that pointless hidden update that screwed up grid brightness. ffs stop fixing things that aren't broke).

I was hoping the ability to use PDFs would be fixed in Jumpgate but unfortunately it is still broken. This is in my own games as well as a game I play in. And yes, I submitted a ticket over a year ago. I tried everything I was asked to try and then was told they were giving up... A bit off topic but still relating to Jumpgate performance.

Erich, if you can re-iterate specific pain points with PDF implementation on Roll20, I'd be happy to make a report. You can PM me if you want to keep this thread focussed.

In a nutshell: they don't work. Here is the last email I received from the support at Roll20 back in April of 2023: ##- Please type your reply above this line -## Your request (116843) has been updated. To add additional comments, reply to this email. Hi again, I wanted to reach out with a bit of an update on this subject -- I do not believe we have a specific solution to the issue you are encountering unfortunately. At present the development team is investigating the general issue itself to find a more systemic level fix. That said, as a potential workaround for the present moment, it may be useful to take screen grabs of the PDFs and upload them to a handout where the could be used somewhat similarly. I know this isn't a perfect solution but it may bridge the gap while we continue investigating.  All the best, Miles In that instance it was PDFs that I had Uploaded to my games. I could use them just fine but my players could not. Now, present day, I am a player in a game (Jumpgate) where the GM shared PDFs. I get the same message as a player as my players did in my game. To date I have never been in a game where PDFs work, and to date PDFs have not worked in any of my games I host on Roll20. I don't care about most of the announcements and things from Roll20 as it is 90% 5.x edition. I don't use that. This behavior appears to affect an unknown number of users across the system.

Hmm. I'm the first to admit that pdf display on Roll20 has had  problems from day 1. The margins still make the pdf impossible to read without maximizing the size of the window, but I don't typically run into the problem of no display at all. What is the typical source of the PDFs you have been testing with? PDFs are not all created equal. I just tested with a pdf I created from InDesign, but I saved it optimized for small file size:
Keith, I've tried PDFs I created, and PDFs purchased off of DriveThruRPG among others. Nothing appeared to work. In your example; are you the GM of the game? When I look at my own PDFs they work fine. Just the players cannot use them. Just as I could not use them in a game I was a player in.

I read your report way too fast, apparently and missed that distinction. So now I have loaded the game in my player Dummy account. I still see the PDF, despite the margin bug. Player view: I know this doesn't help your issue, and that your report is based on your experience. Just saying that I can't reproduce the error. If you want to PM me a PDF that is expressly giving you issues, I'd be happy to test with that.
Do me a favor Keith, use a different machine to view the PDF from your Dummy account. I ran into the issue of using my player account, on the same machine, and it worked perfectly. Same player account on another of my machines and it did not work. Given a chance though I am going to test it again and see what happens in a Jumpgate game.  Of course the game I was in recently was a Jumpgate game and his PDFs would not show for us players.

I did exactly that. I uploaded the PDF as a GM on my desktop Mac. The screen shot I took from my player account was taken from my Chromebook. The game I tested in is a Jumpgate game.

Just to assure you on this, Erich, I have multiple Roll20 games with PDF that work for the Players.  I confirmed this both with my Players looking at the PDF over the past year or longer, and also just now double-checked on my Player dummy/testing account.  Sure, since the time when Roll20 added PDF support I have had some PDF that failed to upload (whether it was a factor of the PDF itself, or Roll20's upload process, I think both).  But, I have not seen a PDF that completed its upload, was usable to the GM, and the GM gave view permission to Players, and it gave an error to the Player's view only. Erich S. said: Do me a favor Keith, use a different machine to view the PDF from your Dummy account.
@Keith, sent you a DM on the subject. Gold, believe me, I would prefer them to work but two years ago I just stopped trying. The Roll20 fellow attempting to assist me wondered about the validity of my PDFs and wanted me to get one from DriveThruRPG to test with: it did not work either. So fast forward two years and I join a game where the GM has several PDFs and guess what? No player can view them. If it was just my problem well, then I would have just read forum and moved on.  Glad they work for you.
Want to express my appreciation to Keith for doing some detective work and trying something I thought I had tried but obviously did not. My problem was PDFs that I created and PDFs from DriveThruRPG would not display properly for my players in my games while they worked fine for me as the GM. He grabbed one of my pdfs and used Adobe Acrobat to compress/optimize it. Told me it worked for him after that. So I tried the same thing and it works. I've not tried to optimize a 300 page sourcebook yet but it will probably work.    The sourcebook worked fine as well. It will be somewhat of a hassle to run PDFs through Adobe to ensure they work. But it sure beats not having them at all.

I wrote a few scripts that seem to be working with 2024, so far... These scripts are very cool.  Feel free to use. Upgrading Roll20 to API is definitely worth it! Finally made the jump and after telling my players the experience would be better they went away disappointed. We had several instances where a drawn circle appeared in the wrong position for a couple of players. If they refreshed it would appear in the correct spot but a few minutes later they would think it was in the wrong spot again. It did represent a moonbeam, so I think the problem was each time it was moved. Is this common behavior?
Thanks for the guide, I made the update.
I have not had a single character transfer work right since jumpgate.
