Is the new "experimental Overlay Effects tool" mentioned in the most recent blog post an actual overhead map layer? Or is it just a weather overlay feature with preset options you can chose from?

The blog and video are unclear.

I am also curious! The video shows the result, but not the interface that made it happen.

I notice nameplates now scale with tokens. Is there anyway to increase or decrease the size of nameplates to make them more legible for very small or very big tokens?

What do you suggest? Should there be a minimum/maximum size?

I'm not sure if I've posted about this here yet, but I'm running into an issue where assets sometimes won't load, and where sometimes the screen is covered by a flickering dark overlay.

Here's a screenshot of what the asset should look like, vs what it looks like when it doesn't load. Sometimes it's individual tokens (I've dragged a previously working character token out of the character list and it just dumps an empty token on the map that I can't do anything with.), sometimes it's everything on the page.

Here's a link to a video of it flashing. I haven't figured out what causes this, but my players have reported it happening multiple times since I switched to jumpgate.

Epilepsy Warning: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uZwIc_EzmHW4PfSsJsHM0w2te9T40V5F/view?usp=sharing

so i have not tried the jumpgate beta yet but i have an idea for how to improve the VTT.
while playing normal games i have noticed a layering issue. when showing elevation the characters in the same square over lap making only the token most recently interacted with viewable. example i have a winged monster like a dragon. the players do not have flight. the dragon hovering over the players would block access to the player tokens. you can not see the player tokens and you can not click on the tokens to move them out of the way. that is the current state of the game's VTT.

i want some kind of feature that will allow for burrowing flying and creatures on land to exist at the same time.
i posted a feature suggestion before and others had great ideas on how this could be done but devs said at the time that the VTT engine could not handle such a thing but that they would look into it for the future when the VTT engine got an update.

Why am i getting this no token error when I pull an npc/player/monster token from my journal ??

July 02 (8 months ago)

The GM can right click the top token and move to back, making the token that was underneath be on top. Maybe not quite what you are looking for but a workable solution in the meantime…

Hi Gellert!

Does that happen with every token, or just that particular one?

I have to reload the entire page multiple times for the token to appear
Tried it on multiple browsers and emptied the cache

Looks like my "Roll20 Team" banner was off for a moment - and should be back now! I should clarify that I'm part of the Roll20Tabletop team working on Jumpgate!

We've had a couple of people on our team try to reproduce the issue you're referencing, and are seeing expected behavior/token show up properly. If there's a specific game you could share (via the PM I sent you), it would be help unblock us from taking a deeper look at this!

you know what would be nice with the new vtt?

customized side bar / chats and dices.
Hell, you can monetize it if you want. People will pay for nice looking dices or custom sidebar / player background chats/rolls in chat log.

Referencing the latest release. We fixed issues...

  • where draw tools were drawing with fill on Lighting layer if fill was previously selected
  • which prevented grid from being set to transparent
  • where player ribbon drag to top row of pages sometimes did not register
  • with desynchronized way-pointed token movement on multi-select
  • where token were incorrectly animating through last token path on multiselect rotation or rescale

A full change log can be accessed here.

Hey i PM`d you the problem in greater detail

July 03 (8 months ago)

I haven’t seen (or caught) any news about players being unable to select their token briefly or the status markers dropping behind tokens (at least for the GM) being fixed. Has that been repaired yet?…

Jumpgate is really chugging on large maps now.  I'm not sure what has changed, but when I used it about a month ago, it had decent (but still not great) performance on larger maps but was otherwise too unstable to use.  Now, I am trying it again but I can hardly even open the larger maps.  Many maps take 30-60 seconds to load if they don't hang entirely.  And the ones I can open are using more than double the memory resources (I've seen as much as 1.1 GB) that the old engine is using.

For example, I have a 130x110 map with a lot of light sources.  Here is what I observed:

Old version: load time = 15 seconds, memory usage 500 MB. Speed once loaded = clunky.

Jumpgate: load time ~ 3 minutes, memory usage 1.1 GB. Speed once loaded = very slightly less clunky.

Even without the lighting (just an empty 130x110 zone), it takes a surprisingly long time to load into the blank page.

July 03 (8 months ago)

I've been experiencing slow loading of large-ish maps (just under 100x100 grid squares) even on non-jumpgate games.

July 04 (8 months ago)

Hiya.  I raised this issue in the first week that Jumpgate was launched - and it still appears to be broken.  I can move my token halfway into a dynamically lit wall.  The wall should block the token but it doesn't.  Just flagging this up again.

July 04 (8 months ago)

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC, tokens are sort of defined by their center point, not their edge. So, when you move the token into the wall, the wall stops the token when it reaches the center point of the token, not the edge.

The dynamic lighting section of the token is actually a 20-25 px square. It is displayed under certain conditions while you are in the DL layer. The issue that MIke is reporting is not so much the fact that it moves so far, but that the token then becomes misaligned with the grid afterward. You have to move it manually to get it to re-snap properly; the arrow keys just move it along the new offset.

I reported this too, but have not re-checked in a while. Have I accurately interpreted your report Mike, and is this still happening (the offset issue)?

This is happening a lot to me on Jumpgate games. When I first start playing the game, the new Jumpgate Macro Options modal box shows on top of all the other windows. However, eventually, I don't know what triggers it, the Macro Options modal box is no longer appearing on top, but below all my other windows. I have to move my character sheets in order to see the modal box. If I refresh the browser, it starts to work correctly again.

Edited July 07 (8 months ago)

I am currently playtesting Jumpgate in a real game (a game with very large maps, dungeon of the mad mage, with over 100x100 tile pages). Here are some things myself and my players noted so far:

- (GM) When switching to the Dynamic Lighting Layer, it sometimes freezes the browser, then turns the entire browser window black. Roll20 throws a "GPU spike detected" error, then when the page returns the entire background layer is black on my screen. Requires refresh to continue.

- (Player) When many tokens are placed by a player, and then those tokens are removed by said player, some remain 'stuck' there and cannot be removed from their perspective. Even when I the GM remove them, they stay there stuck on their screen.

- (GM) The text tool doesn't seem to work right. It's hard to nail down exactly how it doesn't work right, but it seems to lose focus frequently and I have to click the text box again to make changes. I'll try to figure out what's going on in more detail.

- (GM) using thin lines for Dynamic Fog of War results in players being able to see through walls, I had to thicken them to regular to prevent this.

So jumpGate lagging just as much if not more then reg roll20? :/ That's disheartening. I hope this gets ironed out soon.

I'm including a couple of screenshots, in case that helps.

Have that, too! It is especially annoying when it appears BELOW the INLINE Character Sheets... This needs to be fixed ASAP...

Hi Keith

Yes you are absolutely correct about the offset issue.  It's still happening as per my initial post on the matter in the first week of the Jump Gate Beta launch.

On the subject of a the token stopping at the centre point, that never used to be the case and it should never be the case as it will permanently result in this issue.  It's seems fundamentally illogical for that to be the case in any given scenario.

Many thanks!

Mike

Yup same for me

I was actually able to run one of my larger maps ok ish yesterday.  It did have a couple of the GPU spikes for one player, one had some dynamic lighting issues but could move and one has a really really old laptop / connection and couldn't get on the map at all.  3 of us where ok though, and 2 usable.

I did get the issue with the red X on the token appearing behind it though, not on it..

The being stuck to the offset is a new issue and definitely a bug, but being able to move the token partially into a wall is not. This is intendedand has been part of updated Dynamic Lighting since its inception. The token cannot see the other side of the wall, nor can other tokens see the token doing the pushing. This feature is built this way to keep tokens from getting "stuck" by doorways that are not a minimum of 70 pixels across. (There are other reasons, too). This screen shot shows the smaller square that controls movement and visibility. You can see it yourself while you are on the DL layer:

We had an issue with a build server/deploy that caused Jumpgate games not to load. A fix was put in around ~20minutes ago, and Jumpgate games should be loading now.

Gellert - Thanks for writing in with this again, and appreciate your patience. The team is taking a look at this issue in our upcoming sprint with the information/game you've shared with me over PM last week. From what we were able to tell at the initial review, this is not a widespread issue across games and is more intermittent/specific to games - but we can see it in the example game you've provided. I'll keep you updated as our investigation progresses.

Cross-referencing some updates that the team pushed out this week! You can also find the full list on our Change Log.

July 8 releases - Fixed issues:

  • where setting grid to transparent unexpectedly showed up as black grid lines
  • where draw tools were drawing with fill on Lighting layer if fill was previously selected
  • where player ribbon drag to top row of pages sometimes did not register
  • that caused tokens to animate through waypoints, ending in wrong positions on multi-select
  • where multi-selected tokens that were being rotated or rescaled unexpectedly animated through the last waypoint path

July 10 releases:

  • Made an update so Shift+Double Clicking a token linked to a character sheet opens up the Bio & Info tab instead of Attributes and Abilities to be consistent with Legacy
  • Set the default of the Art Library dropdown menu to "Everything" instead of "Tokens"
  • Added styling to zoom buttons in the journal modal

When did nameplates move to the top? I have bars set as bottom overlapping. "Overlapping" previously has allowed token nameplates to remain on bottom.

Confirmed. This is not desirable behavior as it is a change from how folks have it in regular Roll20.

However, if Roll20 gives control over nameplate position then I am ok with it.
