Markus said: Though I normally don't take part in these kinds of discussions and have no interest in what is "politically correct" (since most of that is actually incorrect if one really thought about it), I felt I just needed to point out something. What Pat vdR is saying is - from what I understand - a requirement on communication level and attitude, not a discrimination against race, nationality, etc. The language does not even have to be English. I see various games in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. If a person that cannot speak the target language well (or had a sloppy attitude) tried to join the game, it would not be fun for anyone and just slows things down. This is true for both voice and text communication. It is perfectly normal for a DM to require a certain level of proficiency/attitude of his players to offer a smooth and fun game for the rest of the group. IF the applicant is not able to communicate clearly in the target language, he is welcome to join a group that he is able to communicate well in. Also, a person using half-slang, half-constructed sentences, sloppy punctuation everywhere is a reflection of the person's attitude/personality, and often gives the impression he doesn't care enough for the game or doesn't respect others enough to take care in his expressions. As JustAddSalty hinted at, that may work for teenager groups that just want a "chill" game/group or one-shots, etc., but it generally does not work for a group that is looking for mature/stable players. At the end of the day, though, regardless of what type of group it is, it really just all boils down to the player joining a group that is a match for both sides and provides a win-win experience for both ends - just like how acquintances and friends come together in real life. After all, with the exception of paid games - which is a completely different situation since DMs are offering professional services to customers for a fee - everyone is playing and DMing for free out of their own free will and interest/enjoyment/hobby. I would agree communication level and attitude should be good I wont deny that. But he presented in a manor that If it is not perfect applicant would be turned down. If you do not spell 1 word right, if you do one run on sentence. If you use , instead of . you be denied. This is not fair, you could over look a valuable player that you could play with for years. As a GM I look at the application as a whole, not first sentence or two. What does he wana play? What is his past experience? Does it appear he can pick up a new system with some help? Judging someone by first sentence only is a bad move. Edit: I give you a example. I have been running a BESM game here for 8 months. It is a romance/slice of life/drama/supernatural and isekai genre game. I have one player that has some severe disabilities. He can't type in discord at all without major spelling/grammar mistakes. He has to use text to speech feature from discord to understand what is typed. But I tell you what he is a excellent role-play in voice. If I followed OP he would of been denied because of his typing. This is a example of do not and I mean do not judge a book by its cover.
