D&D Sheet: Print to PDF Beta Feedback

We just launched Print to PDF for the new D&D Fifth Edition sheet! It's available both in-VTT and in Roll20 Characters . We tested this pretty heavily internally, but as a small team there's no way to cover every possible character configuration. Over the next few weeks, if you spot anything weird, drop a screenshot in this thread. Stretch goal: include a link to the game or Roll20 Characters sheet and that helps us even more! Thank you so much!!

The layout for spells sure uses up a lot of paper.
Great feedback! We just deployed an update that should solve for this. Can you try again and let us know if that's better?  Terry W. said: The layout for spells sure uses up a lot of paper.

Scaling pages too large (one page continues into the top portion of the next,) and if I try to adjust any print settings it reverts to looking like the webpage…

Spells are better, the page count for my test warlock dropped from 27 to 18 pages... But moving Notes to a new row underneath the Name/Casting Time/etc. line and allowing it to use the full width of the page would be better. Or changing Name/Casting Time to a stack in one column, giving more room for Notes in a second column. In the 2 column Inventory section (Equipment and Possessions), a little balancing of the columns would also save some space.  Personally, I'd be thrilled with options to PDF, like Markdown or JSON.
That's really interesting -- especially those black bars forming on the edges! Can you tell me the following?  1. Which browser are you using? 2. Are you using the print button, or cmd/cntrl-P? 3. What application are you using to open / view that PDF? Thank you! Thanks Terry! We've been playing with some placement since internal testing, and your notes on this are really useful! This is using the print button with Safari on my iPad Pro. The print preview pane that pops up. Just tried it on the iPad Chrome browser and it just showed about 3/4 of the first page. Will test on my Mac Mini tomorrow in case it is just an iPad issue… Dean said: That's really interesting -- especially those black bars forming on the edges! Can you tell me the following?  1. This is a great start, I love it, especially the combat reference section since that helps a lot especially for new players. A couple of feedback items though, if a feature has some sort of Action/Bonus Action/whatever associated with it I would love to see the number of feature uses listed under the action in the combat section. For example a sorcerer with Innate Sorcery, it adds that feature to the Bonus Action section (Great) but it doesn't show the number of uses you have to go all the way to the features section of the sheet for that. I would argue that the checkboxes should live where the feature is used rather than where the definition of the feature is. Second, I'm not seeing spells list their Verbal/Somatic components anywhere, only Concentration/Ritual/Material. Third, just thinking out loud... the spells in combat reference get a bit verbose with the "notes". I understand the sentiment on having them there but honestly I don't think it's worth the space. Perhaps combining the cantrips/prepared spells page with the combat reference would be more space/page effective. It's easy enough if a player doesn't remember the specifics of a spell to know they need to flip to the spell reference later in the sheet. The other alternative which would be a pain for you guys to do is add another spell description that gets rid of all the fluff that can be put in these notes. That doesn't seem reasonable though, it's just what I would I would do to my own sheet data if I was playing a spell caster (or making a sheet for someone else). Forth, this is just a nit and a problem with printing character sheets in general... things like current HP/XP, gold, etc should have the ability to be blank when printed so you can just write in the correct values yourself. Luckily right now it seems like all of those numbers are a lighter color and have enough space around them to write in your own values which I think is a fine solution. Again, I really enjoy this sheet and I think it's better than other places that allow you to print sheets and I'm excited to see what changes and features you add! *Edit* One other nit/suggestion... y'all did a good job with the page breaks, but one thing that could elevate it IMO is when you have to break something from a list (ie: Attacks) onto a new page, it would be cool to include the Attacks header again. Something like "Attacks (Continued...)". You already are doing with this the table headers, so just seeing it with the section header itself would be cool! *Edit 2* I just found one other thing... in the features sections where we have 2 columns there needs to be some work to force a feature to the other column if it would cause the feature to be split between 2 pages / have a way of forcing the entire feature to a new page instead of part on one and part on the other. With my fighter here it feels weird that it says "Tactical Mind" but the entire description of the feature is on another page, where I would expect to find it in the 2nd column instead. And then Psionic Power gets split between the 2 pages as well.

That doesn't seem reasonable though, it's just what I would I would do to my own sheet data if I was playing a spell caster (or making a sheet for someone else). Thanks for all the detailed feedback! This is something I wanted to call out in particular, because it's something we considered but didn't do for the first round/beta version of this...when I used to handwrite all my character sheets, I obviously didn't write out all the spells. I would write down "Cure Wounds - touch, 1d8+3 heal, 1d8 lvl+" and called it good. Add VSM if your DM is especially strict on those. We did consider adding a new field that a player could fill in for each attack or spell that basically amounts to "what you'd see when you print" so people can add their own shortenings, or later on we could go back into the data and add something "official" to make it a shorter print. Our compromise on that was to leave the Notes section blank on page 2 so people can just add spells there and fill in the shortenings and not bother with the other pages at all if they don't want. But that option is still on the table and doable...I can't commit to anything because that requires sustained, continual work outside of just myself to maintain but I wanted to make sure you knew that we're on the same page.
Overall this is awesome. I have a complex character, but it made 17 pages. When i do it kinda manually it's 6 pages. (warning: I'm sadly deeply familiar with building UI from character data from dprcalc.com , so a bunch of this are just nits) 😉 it ran out of space to print cantrips and prepared spells and just ended the list early. It says my dragonborn breathweapon's damage type is (2d1 0 Draconic Ancestry) 3) It shows base cantrip damage, it would be nice if it scaled it to match your level (as the description mentions) 4) Feel free to steal this idea from my site - but it doesn't show upcast damage/healing at each level. 5) Similar to 2, healing says "Heal 2d8 +2 Healing", like the damage type is "healing", but that's weirdly redundant. 6) Cantrips & spell tables: I bet you could fit a bit more description width in if you made C R M Vertical, (since most of those are taller anyways) 7) Class Features doesn't have counters for uses per LR/SR. That would be insanely helpful. I see it once for Draconic Flight, but not on any of the other skills that have uses. 8) You may want to filter out "Ability Score Increase" in class features, as it doesn't affect gameplay? 9) i have Telekinesis feat, but don't have BA TK shove listed in combat area 10) It would be cool to have preferences - like, to let people selectively show or not show [x] inventory, [x] feature [√] spell descriptions. Do i really need the full description for rope and dagger, and that all of my 'possession' are individually labeled as Possession as a new line for each? Hope that's helpful feedback
OK, so DnD 5E sheets can now be printed to PDF. Any idea when we can expect the same for Pathfinder 2E?
Les C. said: OK, so DnD 5E sheets can now be printed to PDF. Any idea when we can expect the same for Pathfinder 2E? Given that they likely want people to use the Demiplane sheet, and that sheet already has print to PDF capability, I doubt they will add it to the Roll20 sheet if it's not already there :P
ohoho
so printing a lev 1 fighter....16 pages!! page 1 1.1) sort of OK but misaligned abilities are not nice: can we have proficiency and inspiration on top and the 6 aligned? 1.2) why are features feats and traits single line with all that space devoted to them 1.3 I would put size in another page, proficiency bonus where size is now and the inspiration squeezed somewhere else (on top by the name maybe?) page 2-3-4-5-6 2.1) those are a great bit nothing!!!! page 7-8 3.1) this formatting has gone bad 3.2) spell list is way too long and with graphic artifact in the middle  3.3) size is here so can be removed from page 1 (see 1.3 above)  3.4) backstory too has artifacts 3.5 why is attunement here? page 9 4.1) this page is nice even the repeat of passive perception is ok 4.2) proficiencies make more sense here. add the armor and remove from page 1 4.3) get rid of attack notes, too much text minimal usefulness (maybe an icon to say there is text online (or 3 word and the ...) 4.4) a mastery is repeated for no reason also here too avoid notes TO BE CONTINUED....
part 2 page 10 5.1) if notes are removed/ reduced here and in the previous page this could become part of the previous page 5.2) reactions: opportunity attack should be a name not a note 5.3) in general on these two pages the space for the notes should be there but leave to the player to write 2 words to remember details if needed. all text is too much and the machine cannot understand which part I do need page 11 6.1) this is the proper spell page not that 7/8 above 6.2) the wis| high elf block is not useful at most will have a couple of lines maybe add to the left block that is enlarged so can have a few extra lines? 6.3) in the slot table the dotted lines should be under the expended not the total ( or maybe bot with a / separation? 6.4) here the notes are good to have. action/bonus... could have his own column? (like on page 8..) page 12-13 7.1) remove descriptions (this is an extra object that integrates with the VTT if I need info I look online) 7.2) maybe put it in one column instead of 2 (like the combat page) 7.3) magic item attunement should be only here but I would put it at the to of the inventory section WAIT FOR PART 3

part 3 page 14 7.4 this is a continuation of page 12-13 above and should reduce into that page 15-16 8.1) this is ok also medium is repeated here too so it can be removed from page 1 and 7-8 8.2) can you also put here whatever is in the bio and info page? conclusion I think page 7-8 were not intended to be there in that case you have section 1 main info (page 1) section 2 combat (page 9-10) section 3 spell (page 11) section 4 inventory (12-13-14) section 5 backstory (15-16) if inventory is reduced to 2 pages it can make for 5 sheets two sided if you can instruct to put a section breack so that each section starts on an odd page. hope it helps and always thanks for the good work Andrea p.s. game link as requested&nbsp;<a href="https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/20754426" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/20754426</a>

What does the Roll20 crystal ball reveal for the future of this feature? In particular, will it be extended to other character sheets, and if so, will it be only as they are added to the new character sheet engine?
Hi&nbsp; to add a data point I generated the pdf for a 16th level wizard... it is 44 pages long!!! i will not do the detailed analysis like the fighter above so only high level comment of the pages page 1 is like the other with the same issues (even more evident are the features, traits and feats one after the other when there is enough space to put them one per line ages 2 to 20 are empty pages 21-22 are the badly formatted spells (like pages 7-8 in previous post's fighter) and spell are shown only partially up to level 2 pages 23-28 is combat reference of which 23-27 are the attack with an obscene amount of space for notes and repetition (ten repetition for each color of the prismatic wall...almost one page just for that attack) pages 29 38 is spell book: in my opinion we really need the option to print with or without notes/descriptions. once as a sell book maybe is ok but if I need to use it really as a paper sheet I do not want all description that make the section 10 pages long. Also the prepared/non prepared diamond should be empty for all of them otherwise using it as a paper sheet is impossible as I can change prepared spells pages 39-41 is equipment (short as we did not bother to track anymore mundane equipment) but everything is a lot of text and strangely only the left column of the equipment is used pages 42-44 are backstory and that is basically ok (same notes as above) game is the following&nbsp; <a href="https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/19738849" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/19738849</a> character is eoghann hope it helps Andrea

Hi Sophie L.,&nbsp; My understanding is that printing has been a possibility for the Legacy sheets for a long time now. It is up to each Character Sheet creator to enable it on their sheets.&nbsp; Beacon is a different animal so I cannot speak to that.&nbsp; Edit: found the announcement for Legacy sheet printing:&nbsp;<a href="https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/11230268/new-print-functionality-for-character-sheets/?pagenum=1" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/11230268/new-print-functionality-for-character-sheets/?pagenum=1</a> Sophie L. said: What does the Roll20 crystal ball reveal for the future of this feature? A 16 page character sheet for a fighter !? The mind boggles. D&amp;D is reaching Squad Leader &nbsp;levels of complexity. My first D&amp;D character ever - a "Magic User" - fit on a 3x5 card.

Thank you all for all the reports! We've gone through and fixed quite a few of these issues. Firefox printing should not result in a bunch of empty pages anymore - this was something we encountered during development, fixed, and then regressed after release because I was trying to clean up the CSS and remove the parts that "did nothing" but I was testing on Chrome during that step, sorry :( This should also fix any border alignment issues you may be seeing in Firefox. VSM and RC should now both be represented in the Spells page under the Tags column. Two-column tables like inventory and features now push each individual cell to the next page if it's going to split pages, to make them easier to read. Heals no longer have a damage type of "Healing" next to their rolls. Actions no longer have an useless "Effect" column. On page 2, the Backstory/Personality section no longer has a big empty space if you have an item there with a name but no description. Most of the feedback that's still outstanding falls into one of two categories: Feedback on the first two pages that recommends we change what's displayed there or how it's displayed. I can't guarantee that it will be this way forever, but one of the pieces of feedback that we've heard a lot on the 5.5 sheet's design is "we want it to look exactly like the paper sheet, so it's familiar and matches what we'd see if we filled it out ourselves". We took that to heart and the first two pages are as close to the 5.5 paper sheet as we could manage. Your feedback on this topic is still very welcome and may influence future decisions on how we handle those pages, but I wanted to be clear on our goals and why some feedback has been implemented and some has been recorded but not immediately implemented. Feedback that goes beyond a quick bug fix, mainly on customizability of which parts to print and how. We had a lot of debates on how to handle the simple fact that there's just a lot of data on the Roll20 sheet, and there's no easy way to show it all without the print view ballooning. Spells have descriptions. Each attack, save, action, or heal under that spell also has its own description, which may differ from the spell description and may have custom content that each user entered. Items have descriptions, sometimes surprisingly long for a mundane item like rope or tinderbox. Your ability score improvement feat has a description. Part of the design ethos of the 5.5 sheet is that we don't care specifically what these things are for maximum flexibility, we just take the data and display it. We considered hardcoding some guardrails (for example, just looking for a feature named Ability Score Improvement and not displaying it on the printed sheet), we considered a larger overhaul of sheet data (for example, allowing you or the data team to write in a very shortened version of the description for print-only), we considered print-specific settings (for example, asking when you print if you care about the descriptions of your mundane items), we considered just not printing some of the data like full descriptions so you would still need the digital version to play the game. In the end, we landed on "show them everything and let them only print the pages that matter to them" for MVP, but more feedback on what you'd like for this topic is very helpful. We may not act on it immediately, but depending on the volume of feedback and the popularity of printing, this is something we may circle back to. So the feedback is very appreciated and taken seriously even if you're not seeing change today. Thank you for everyone who has tried this out and given us in-depth feedback!
LOL!&nbsp; Point made. :D&nbsp; I was engaging in a bit of hyperbole (but just a bit). We're currently 4 hours into playing scenario 34 (Nijmegan Bridge). Andrea L. said: corporal fritz the 1-3-6 unit hidden in the main factory building in Stalingrad with a machine gun probably disagrees
thanks Nicole for the clarification of the reasoning behind this build. it clarifies the repetitions and almost all else. the fighter is now 10 pages long ( the 16th level wizard is now down to 24) here the structure with the content in the pages for the fighter &nbsp;( and for the wizard) 1 abilities 2 condensed spell backstory and equipment 3-4 combat reference (3-8) 5 spell (9-18) 6-8 inventory (19-21) 9-10 backstory and features (22-24) I'll try to organize my observations in the categories "I think this is a bug" "I really recommend change" " customization and nice to have" BUGS 1) page 2 still does not show VSM (page 5 is Ok as in these 2 pictures 2) Defenses and senses are really missing and should go in the first 2 condensed pages (maybe taking half of page 1 features) 3) Combat Reference page: FIGHTER vex mastery appears twice 4) inventory page: one object of the list goes to new page but it seems there's plenty of space in the first page (Firefox browser) 5) everywhere right border is 2 lines while left border is only one (visible in the pictures above) 6) WIZARD page 2 is limited to 1st and some of the 2nd level spell only&nbsp; 7) WIZARD spall page: some spell description are missing (fireball for example) 8) WIZARD spell page: some alignments are off (the spell last in the page for example, as in the image, is aligned top instead of middle for VSM) 9) inventory page WIZARD: left column is empty in both equipment and possession RECOMMEND page 1: 1) proficiency bonus and heroic inspiration are weird at the beginning and end of a 2 column area I would move them bot on top or one on the side instead of size 2) size is really non useful in the first page and is shown also on page 2 3) features traits and feats all on the same line when there are many empty lines are a strange choice 4) Inventory page: magic item attunement on top and not in the middle 5) the equipped black diamond should be empty to allow usage and modification of the paper sheet CUSTOMIZATION 1) Combat Reference page: maybe a "show notes in pdf" option in the online sheet? I really would love a version without notes 2) inventory page: same as above text is too much, I'd love an option not to show Note: everything is generated on Firefox on a Mac and the game to check if you want is&nbsp; <a href="https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/20754426" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/campaigns/details/20754426</a> thanks and regards Andrea
