Project Jumpgate: officially out of beta

Mike E said: Hi Lavi.  Good to see progress!  The issue regarding slowdown of animations and the jittering of music which is seemingly related still persists.  This is a big issue for me as I like to use immersion in my games.  To summarise again, if I have an animation overlay on a map (e.g rain) it works ok on load up.  Any music also generally works ok on load up.  If I then switch to another map with an animation (e.g. Snow), the animation slows right down and the music stutters badly.  Cycling through maps with further animations makes it worse and worse until you press F5 which seems to set you back at square one.   Hey Mike E - Thanks for the report! We’ve been running into some memory issues with our rendering engine’s usage of assets, which causes some of the things you’ve described, especially when you change pages. We’ve got a solution that we’re working on that should address these issues and hope to have it out here soon.
RPGeezer said: No journal NPC character sheets would open for my Tuesday game… Hi RPGeezer -  Would you mind DM’ing me over the link to the game where this happened, please? Also, if it’s not too much trouble, would you mind giving me a rough idea of when exactly this occurred? I just want to double check that we didn’t have a Firebase outage or something during that timeframe.

Hi Adam C. - as a GM you can double-click on your token to get the token settings menu, and ensure Nameplace check mark is selected in settings, and token bars have values in them.  The other thing to check, is to make sure your token is not set as a drawing, which means this setting is not selected in right click menu: If you're still unable to see this, please let us know if you're logged in as Player or GM, what layer your token is on, and screenshots would additionally help. Adam C. said: I can't figure out how to add nameplates to tokens.
TheMarkus1204 said: PROBLEM: When opening the Dice Roller it stays behind the left bar and is NOT movable! Latest Firefox, Incognito Mode, NO extensions active! Oddly I do not see this issue on Firefox myself.  There is a gap between the menu and roll box.  Had to check as I never use the option, just use [[d20]] or whatever in chat if I need non-char sheet rolls.

I'm SO upset!!! I tryed Jumpgate on my PF1 game...all my characters and handouts are GONE...more than 200 items, wtf!!!! There's no amount of money to repay this...4 years of playing...it's just crap! And to think I pay for this! Bah... EDIT I found a very old backup, unfortunately many things are still missing. The Legacy Backup it created is all buggy and unusable and with no items still, I've lost a lot...are you sure you're out of beta?

Daniel S. said: Just want to report. Last year, I tried Jumpgate on my Macbook running OS X 10.14 and the performance was so choppy and laggy it was unusable. Today, trying things out, even on an outdated version of Chrome, it runs very smoothly and is quite performant. Very happy with the improvement! Thanks. Following up to my own post. While it performs faster and is overall smooth, my laptop started overheating VERY quickly, with the fan going wild. Similar to if I was running a 3d game on steam, on this old mid 2012 Macbook Pro. Running in Legacy does not work my laptop so hard, for whatever reason. Looks like jumpgate is still not an option for me at this point, unless I want my laptop to be choking the whole time, and so loud it would be picked up by the built in mic.
You should definitely submit a ticket… Valerio I. said: I'm SO upset!!! I tryed Jumpgate on my PF1 game...all my characters and handouts are GONE...more than 200 items, wtf!!!! Hi Valerio I.,  I would file a request with Roll20 via the Help Center , and do it quickly. Every game has a daily backup that lasts for 7 days. You should be able to get your game reset to a state where it was working if it is within the last 7 days.
HI Ran our first session in Jumpgate last night in a game converted to jumpgate with dnd 2014 character sheet. As GM I found opening players character sheet took much longer than usual but players were able to open instantly. Had one minor issue where we have a macro (using ChatSettAttr API) to turn on the global modifier flag for bless. The macro worked as the flag was shown active but the additional 1d4 roll did not happen. If I turned the flag off and back on in the character sheet it worked ok. Doing it in the character sheet was a bit painful given the slow opening of the character sheet Other than that everything worked great

Hi FFR! For ChatSetAttr, check the configuration settings and make sure "use sheet workers" is turned on. I'm not positive that will fix the issue, but it's worth trying.

Or just a few? Also, if it’s not too much trouble, would you mind sending me a link to the game over DM please? I would like to take a look more directly at the associated Firebase data to see if anything happened.

Hi Valerio - the team has been working on attempts to restore your game (Nuovi Orizzonti) - it looks like the conversion to Jumpgate was done on December 15th? If you have an open request on the Help Center Ketih and Gauss pointed you to, could you share the id? Someone from our Customer Service team will be aiming to reach out to you directly over that channel the next day or two. Gauss said: Valerio I. said: I'm SO upset!!! But that was a LONG long time ago before something got messed up. I know I'm not the norm but there's enough GMs that do make larger games that this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

This sounds more like a sheet specific issue rather than Jumpgate, but I would love to do some testing on my end to confirm.

I'm not sure if this is a jumpgate issue, or a (D&D 5e 2014) charactermancer issue, because I've only seen this since I and another GM have converted our games to Jumpgate: Lately in our games players have been having trouble creating characters and leveling up. They go through the charactermancer, save changes, but the changes don't always apply until they exit and re-enter the game.
I'm noticing that the tint effect is very different (more pronounced) than it was on the old version, to the point where some effects on my map just look wrong now. Also, it only seems to apply the tint to parts of a semi-transparent animated map tile that aren't transparent at all.
Bug Report: Maps that have been flipped horizontally or vertically are reverting back to their non flipped state frequently. ~GM Kizz
Hi Rick - thanks for sharing. This is a 5E charactermancer-specific item, and we have some help articles  that may help directly address troubleshooting for what you're experiencing. If you have any additional questions, the best next step is to submit a request through our Help Center Form so one of our customer service specialist can help with this issue direclty. Hi GM Kizz!  We released a fix on Tuesday to solve the broader issue where tokens flipped on x/y axis didn't retain rotation on refresh. There are certain circumstances where after the fix may have reverted your last change and you may need to flip them just one more time to the place you want - and the expectation is they'll retain rotation from that point forward. So, I wanted to confirm if since Tuesday, you are still experiencing that tokens don't retain their rotation upon refresh? If that's the case, this may have exposed another potential edge case bug we'll need to take a look at. Hello Lavi and other roll20 gods! I am having the same texture-flipping problem.  I have a large map, a town, and there's a tavern texture I've placed along with other buildings.  And the Tavern texture keeps reverting to its original flipping.   Seems to do so with every refresh of the page. This was happening with another texture, but I had uploaded that one, so I flipped it in my editor and reuploaded it.  Problem solved.  But the tavern is a store bought item. I was hoping the Tuesday fix would fix it, and waited a few days to comment, but, nope, it's still happening! -- Jeff Lavi said: Hi GM Kizz!  We released a fix on Tuesday to solve the broader issue where tokens flipped on x/y axis didn't retain rotation on refresh. I am able to load a Jumpgate game on a Chromebook. Have them try deleting cache and cookies. Of course, it might still be an issue of scale. Is the map exceedingly large, with complex dynamic lighting?

After Nicholas said the issue with seeing through Legacy walls was fixed, I decided to check how things are going today. Although the token no longer goes through the wall, five minutes of testing showed the issue of explorer mode seeing through walls is still there. A few observations: The checking of lines of sight and explorable area can't keep up to the token movement. Holding and continuously moving a token for over 10 seconds causes lines of sight and explorable darkness lines to continue to move for a few seconds after the token is dropped. Holding onto a token too long or moving it too far causes the system to eventually give up. I made this happen three times, but I was not able to screen record it in movement. The picture below is simply the most spectacular failure. Tokens that are not 1x1 seem to get hung up on the wall and/or see through it. Dropping a non-square image on a page with the grid turned off resizes the image to a 1x1 grid square. The grid is not on, so the image should drop with its true dimensions. 1 and 2 seem to be related. It seems that holding onto the token and moving it around too much causes what the token can see to disconnect from what the token should see. I was able to replicate this many times using Ctrl+L, but not while using GIF capture software. I think the GIF capture software slows things down sufficiently that Jumpgate is able to keep up on Chrome. I was able to get it to break while recording on Firefox as a Player. This was the most spectacular failure. The token had most of its movement limited to the "kitchen". I was also able to capture the effect after the lighting system broke using Ctrl+L. I'll put 3 in a separate post. Man, 5 minutes of testing and 1 to 2 hours of free labor to Roll20 documenting the issue.

Regarding my post above issue #3: "Tokens that are not 1x1 seem to get hung up on the wall and/or see through it." I ran into 3 scenarios where a token was able to see through a wall as a player. Shrinking the token down to .25 of a square allows the token to see through walls above or to the left of the token when held up against the wall. Shrinking the token down to .5 of a square allows the token to see through walls after being held a few seconds. If that doesn't work it can be triggered if the player holds the token up against a wall and then releases it so that it snaps to a position on the grid. The token can then see through walls above or to the left of the token when held up against the wall. If the token is resized to 2x2 while the lighting system is engaged, it can see through walls depending on how the scenario gets set up. and gets stuck on the wall if you let go of the token. This only occurs if the person doing the viewing triggers the size change. I first found this by resizing a token to 2x2 while Ctrl+L was engaged. As a player I could trigger this by resizing the token with TokenMod. 1. and 2. are similar. Sometimes they can automatically see through the walls. Sometimes you have to let them snap back to the grid first. 3. Two similar scenarios with a 2x2 token. Resized as a player with: !token-mod --set scale|2g 3a. In the first, we resize and immediately move the token around. The 2x2 token sees through the wall. If you let go of the token while it sees through the wall, it gets stuck on the wall. 3b. The second occurs if you settle the token onto the grid after resizing and then move it around. It doesn't see all the way through the walls, but the explored area shows a little bit beyond the areas of the area it should be able to see.

Seems like something happened with animated objects in jumpgate. Any animated images added to the table (from marketplace or uploaded) are not displaying at all. The only indication there's something there is that it's still can be selected/moved/deleted. Edit: After some testing, it looks like the animated objects are only broken in Firefox. When using Chrome/Edge, it displays fine.

In Chrome, do they appear if you refresh the game? I've had that issue lately with just ordinary graphics upon occasion.

Although I've noticed similar issues on legacy, they do seem to be more pronounced on Jumpgate. Myself or Lavi will get back to you next week once we have more information to provide. Many thanks for the detailed reports!

Modifier Windows behind Character Sheets again! Jumpgate Game, Latest Firefox! (Incognito Mode, no extensions) Thing is, it is NOT consistent! At the beginning of our session, everything was fine. In between I minimized the Character Sheets (Inline) by double clicking them... but later on and within a battle, the modifier window was behind the character sheets again!

Or just a few? Also, if it’s not too much trouble, would you mind sending me a link to the game over DM please? I would like to take a look more directly at the associated Firebase data to see if anything happened. I'm told by my other players that alot of the ones they can see are out of folders and only a few are in from way back. I'm one of the ones that the game wont load for sadly so i haven't been able to check myself. :'( Seems so far my 6 players say it runs slower/worse through jumpgate. My games tend to have ALOT of sheets and large maps. There was a golden time when roll20 ran them flawlessly and everyone was able to even play on their phones it ran so well. But that was a LONG long time ago before something got messed up. I know I'm not the norm but there's enough GMs that do make larger games that this shouldn't be too much of an issue. Hey Mr. NumNums -  I'm sorry the experience hasn't been the best for you, but I really appreciate you taking the time to provide us the feedback. If it's not too much trouble, would you mind letting me know roughly what hardware specs and graphics cards those folks with these issues are running? Recently, we've gotten word that there may be a trend of Nvidia graphics card driver problems related to WebGL, which we depend on, so I'm curious if there may be a pattern here as well. Most if not all of the 6+ players playing my games have updated their drivers and They've enable hardware acceleration in their browser settings, WebGL is enabled. We tend to play mid to higher end online videogames on the reg (sea of thieves, elden ring, Fallout76, etc etc)  Without issues. So it's abit baffling to us why roll20 has such a hard time. Still lags by comparison. I assume on your guys end Efficient Rendering Techniques are being used and you did a good amount of profiling and testing. Was any of this tested for larger maps and or games? did it stack up well compared to the old set up? Is there a low rendering option to help with this?
My jumpgate is run ning smoothly and the visual updates to the tokens and such look incredible.  My only concern is the turn order. Out of Jumpgate, if i go through multiple creature/player turns in the turn order, it quickly cycles through them. But in jumpgate, it takes anywhere from 5-10 seconds for each and every token.  While its loading the next token in the turn order, the entire site lags and struggles. If i dare click next turn multiple times, the entire site either takes 10 minutes to load, or just crashes entirely.  Does anyone know of a way to fix this turn order issue? If so, please let me know!
Are you using the default turn order, or one that's part of some API? I've not seen this with the default turn order. If you're using an API, that could be at least part of the problem. These UDL game-breaking issues (see  Brian C's awesome posts above) are a problem. Change Log is wall-to-wall "D&D 2024 Character Sheet" fixes ( notwithstanding that has been an insane dev-time pit ). Hasbro WotC is directly competing as a D&D VTT. This long-time subscriber hopes you'll prioritize your core product, not theirs. Just sayin'..
