Project Jumpgate: officially out of beta

January 26 (1 month ago)

Looks like it's fixed. All of them are working now. :)

Seems like something happened with animated objects in jumpgate. Any animated images added to the table (from marketplace or uploaded) are not displaying at all. The only indication there's something there is that it's still can be selected/moved/deleted.

Edit: After some testing, it looks like the animated objects are only broken in Firefox. When using Chrome/Edge, it displays fine.

Hi Coldin -

We actually just released a fix for this a few hours ago. Would you mind checking again now and letting me know if you're still running into issues, please? Thanks!

Hi,

Using Flight API. In legacy games it added 2 token markers eg 2 and 5 for 25 feet. In Jumpgate only 1 marker is added.

Is anyone aware of a plan to fix this ?

Multiple TokenMarkers was emergent behavior in the Legacy VTT.  It was behavior that was preserved across several updates by the devs.  Jumpgate currently doesn't have that behavior, but I've talked to the devs about preserving it.  I'm hopeful for that outcome.

January 28 (1 month ago)

or just allow numbers > 9 on token markers

January 28 (1 month ago)

That would be convenient, although the numbers would need to be a smaller to fit in the allowed space. Is there a limit to the size that a token marker can be? Also, there'd have to be a way to recognize two keystrokes instead of just one.

Karacha said:

January 28 (1 month ago)

It would need to go up to 999 to be useful

The developers could implement a keystroke delay between key presses to decide if you are writing a larger number or a single digit number

Hi Mr. NumNums - I reached out with a followup over PM in case you may not have spotted it. We would appreciate some time to dig into this live with you as there are numerous factors that could contribute to the lag.

The team worked to solve all the known root causes from user reports. We have one last known fix being released in the next couple of days that will help reduce lag for slow network speeds.

Tried copying a game, most of the sheets were suddenly not in their folders, The game loads much slower (for some of my players they're stuck on the loading screen) Doesn't seem like an upgrade. Hopefully you guys can fix the bugs :/

Hi Mr. NumNums -

In regards to the sheets/folder issue, just to confirm, are all of the sheets in the game out of their respective folders and at the root? Or just a few? Also, if it’s not too much trouble, would you mind sending me a link to the game over DM please? I would like to take a look more directly at the associated Firebase data to see if anything happened.

I'm told by my other players that alot of the ones they can see are out of folders and only a few are in from way back.
I'm one of the ones that the game wont load for sadly so i haven't been able to check myself. :'(

Seems so far my 6 players say it runs slower/worse through jumpgate.
My games tend to have ALOT of sheets and large maps. There was a golden time when roll20 ran them flawlessly and everyone was able to even play on their phones it ran so well. But that was a LONG long time ago before something got messed up.
I know I'm not the norm but there's enough GMs that do make larger games that this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Hey Mr. NumNums -

I'm sorry the experience hasn't been the best for you, but I really appreciate you taking the time to provide us the feedback. If it's not too much trouble, would you mind letting me know roughly what hardware specs and graphics cards those folks with these issues are running? Recently, we've gotten word that there may be a trend of Nvidia graphics card driver problems related to WebGL, which we depend on, so I'm curious if there may be a pattern here as well.

Most if not all of the 6+ players playing my games have updated their drivers and They've enable hardware acceleration in their browser settings, WebGL is enabled.
We tend to play mid to higher end online videogames on the reg (sea of thieves, elden ring, Fallout76, etc etc)  Without issues. So it's abit baffling to us why roll20 has such a hard time.

Still lags by comparison. I assume on your guys end Efficient Rendering Techniques are being used and you did a good amount of profiling and testing.

Was any of this tested for larger maps and or games? did it stack up well compared to the old set up? Is there a low rendering option to help with this?

Hi Brian - First of all, thank you for this detailed report. We sincerely appreciate the time and effort you put into your documentation, especially given that the issue shown is both intermittent and rarely reported. We understand how frustrating it must be when it does occur.

Despite our initial investigation efforts, the sporadic occurrence & limited reports impede our ability to identify a straightforward cause or solution to what you are experiencing. While we are tracking this issue, we are not able to allocate more resources to investigate and address the bug at this time without pulling from higher priority projects. If additional reports begin to indicate a broader impact or provide additional insights, that will of course be reassessed.

Although this response will likely add to your frustration, we want to be candid about how team focus is allocated for bug fixes and how the team triages reports of bugs while simultaneously focusing on other projects.

Regarding my post above issue #3:

"Tokens that are not 1x1 seem to get hung up on the wall and/or see through it."

I ran into 3 scenarios where a token was able to see through a wall as a player.

  1. Shrinking the token down to .25 of a square allows the token to see through walls above or to the left of the token when held up against the wall.
  2. Shrinking the token down to .5 of a square allows the token to see through walls after being held a few seconds. If that doesn't work it can be triggered if the player holds the token up against a wall and then releases it so that it snaps to a position on the grid. The token can then see through walls above or to the left of the token when held up against the wall.
  3. If the token is resized to 2x2 while the lighting system is engaged, it can see through walls depending on how the scenario gets set up. and gets stuck on the wall if you let go of the token. This only occurs if the person doing the viewing triggers the size change. I first found this by resizing a token to 2x2 while Ctrl+L was engaged. As a player I could trigger this by resizing the token with TokenMod.

1. and 2. are similar. Sometimes they can automatically see through the walls. Sometimes you have to let them snap back to the grid first.

3. Two similar scenarios with a 2x2 token. Resized as a player with:

!token-mod --set scale|2g

3a. In the first, we resize and immediately move the token around. The 2x2 token sees through the wall. If you let go of the token while it sees through the wall, it gets stuck on the wall.

3b. The second occurs if you settle the token onto the grid after resizing and then move it around. It doesn't see all the way through the walls, but the explored area shows a little bit beyond the areas of the area it should be able to see.

Hey Brian C. -

Wanted to make sure you knew that I brought this to the other engineers and we're in the process of reviewing it. Although I've noticed similar issues on legacy, they do seem to be more pronounced on Jumpgate. Myself or Lavi will get back to you next week once we have more information to provide. Many thanks for the detailed reports!

Hello Lavi and other roll20 gods!

I am having the same texture-flipping problem.  I have a large map, a town, and there's a tavern texture I've placed along with other buildings.  And the Tavern texture keeps reverting to its original flipping.   Seems to do so with every refresh of the page.

This was happening with another texture, but I had uploaded that one, so I flipped it in my editor and reuploaded it.  Problem solved.  But the tavern is a store bought item.

I was hoping the Tuesday fix would fix it, and waited a few days to comment, but, nope, it's still happening!

Hi GM Kizz!

We released a fix on Tuesday to solve the broader issue where tokens flipped on x/y axis didn't retain rotation on refresh. There are certain circumstances where after the fix may have reverted your last change and you may need to flip them just one more time to the place you want - and the expectation is they'll retain rotation from that point forward.

So, I wanted to confirm if since Tuesday, you are still experiencing that tokens don't retain their rotation upon refresh? If that's the case, this may have exposed another potential edge case bug we'll need to take a look at.

Just a heads up we pushed out another fix for flipped tokens/maps related to multi-material assets today. Would you mind checking to see if you're still experiencing the issue please? Thanks!

I was shocked to find out that my players can see the floating names of tokens put into the margins in the token layer. This obviously wasn't a problem in original Roll20 because you can't use the margins, but could really mess up a game for someone if not addressed. I would hate to put an Ancient Black Dragon ultimate endgame boss in the margins for him to swoop in, only for the players to see the name hovering over there.

I do understand there is a GM layer and I use it, but sometimes it's very handy to use the margins and looks better if they walk in rather then just pop into existence.

Leland - can you share your game link with me over DMs so we can take a look? It's not the intended behavior that nameplates off board are visible to players, and not something we're able to reproduce in the scenarios of using player previews. It may be a specific edge circumstance leading to this un-expected behavior that we'll need to fix.

A couple of additional clarifications:

1) Did this happen live with your players, or when you were previewing as a player?

2) If it was in "previewing as a player," did you use CNTRL + L or "re-join as player" method?

Hi Markus - can you share your game with me over DM? We have only had one or two reports of this behavior happening intermittently outside of your couple of mentions which makes it challenging to track down and solve. Is there any other specific circumstance you could help share that would narrow down on the issue?

Having a problem in my jumpgate game, not sure if it is jumpgate related.  I have prepared a number of handouts for my players, background on the environment type things, in pdf format.  They can not see the pdf handouts after sharing the handouts with them.  All 7 of my players.  Didn't have this issue until migrating to jumpgate.  So, either, jumpgate is having a pdf view issue, or all of roll20 is.  I doubt it's all roll 20.  Also, didn't see anything on the forums...soo...I would think this would be a big enough issue to cause major complaints.  This has happened for the last 2 game sessions (we play bi-weekly, so 3 weeks), so what ever it is it is persistent.

February 04 (1 month ago)

I've had problems with PDFs both in jumpgate games and non-jumpgate games both as a player and a DM. I've stopped using them. It's a little more work, but I find that cut&paste into regular handouts works for me as a DM for smaller PDFs. For large PDFs that cut&paste wouldn't be practical for, I've uploaded to Dropbox and given my players access to them there.

This happened with my players. I noticed them pinging the name off of the board and realized they could see it, to which they said yeah. I then turned off the name plates and asked if they could see any and they said no. I'll send you the game link now. This is using the ASOIAF character sheet by Alex O. not sure if that factors into how names appear and interact with Jumpgate.

HI DM BobbyD - unfortunately there's no way to convert a Jumpgate game to Legacy as there are numerous new features in Jumpgate that don't exist in our Legacy/Classic Tabletop. Do you happen to have the chromebooks specs of your player that you could share and (and your game  link via a DM) so we could try to reproduce this to nail a potential root cause?

Yah, I've got similar work arounds in place, but they are just that, workarounds.  Not cutting and pasting entire multi page documents with formatting into regular handouts for a variety of reasons.  Looks like a trouble ticket it is then.

Te old NPC sheet was quick an dall in one, you didnt have to open 50 different sub sections to edit everything, or deal with drop down menus that dont work.  Anytiem I try to add damage resistance nothing happens.  The "Add" button does nothing. Can we just hav ethe same funtionality of the old NPC sheets with the new updated content? Like spells etc?

Hi there! Feedback or questions relating to the new 5e sheets can be posted in this thread. To answer your questions though:

  1. We've heard this feedback in a few different places and are looking into ways to make NPC building more efficient for GMs. Our current focus has been on bug fixes and some smaller quality of life improvements, so I don't have an ETA for you just yet. Keep an eye on our blogs for updated roadmaps and priorities.
  2. The issue with adding damage resistance is definitely a bug. We've raised a ticket to get it fixed asap! The change log is the best place for up-to-date info on the bugs we are fixing (there are a lot!).

Hi,

Having a minor issue with the order of tokens as they pass through the turn order. If I have a rider on a mount I send the mount token to back so the rider is visible. As the tokens pass through the turn order and reaches a mount the mount then comes back to the front and obscures the rider meaning I have to select the token and send it to back each time.

Hope that makes sense and wondered if anyone else is experienced this or is this intended behavior

Thanks

Hi Markus - After taking a deeper look, this is caused by a Z-index issue. We have a fix in progress for on Advanced/Beacon sheets coming out toward the end of the month as a part of a sheet framework uplift. The specific sheet you're using here is leveraging the legacy sheet framework. While we are aiming to backport this update to work for the legacy sheets as well in our next couple of sprints, I don't have a specific target date that I can share at this time.

I do not use the turn order tracker for tracking turns, so have never run into this problem.  But as a Pro subscriber, if it is intended behavior, you could use the Token Mod Script ( https://wiki.roll20.net/Script:Token_Mod ) to write a script allowing the player to move their token back to the front.  This puts the agency back to to the player rather than on you.  And if you write it to use their ID, then it only effects them.  I haven't looked, but if this is intended behavior somebody has probably already written a script for that on the token mod forum ( https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/4225825/script-update-tokenmod-an-interface-to-adjusting-properties-of-a-token-from-a-macro-or-the-chat-area#post-12197942 ).  Not sure this is helpful, but the best I could do.  If it is not intended behavior, but is not fixed quickly, the token mod script would still be a workaround until the behavior is corrected.

I was playing around with creating a new module with Jumpgate but immediately noticed two large issues when I loaded up the game.

1) The map and map grid never shows up, even when creating a new page.

2) I have no option to create a character (only import).

I feel like I'll need to use Jumpgate eventually if I want to use the 2024 5e character sheets along with modules that were created using the 2014 5e character sheets but simple things don't seem to work.

Any suggestions?

The grouping of players on the map maintenance has the same odd behaviour of a popup window going behind the main when clicking the All button to right of select all.  Selecting Online Only also cannot be reversed.  And while looking there, why is the close button labelled Cancel when it closes and does not undo changes?

February 11 (1 month ago)

Things were going too well...

I have been working for the last 7 months on preparing a Call of Cthulhu adventure to run for some friends. It has taken me a lot of time finding maps and other things, and putting everything together. I have about 50 or so maps. I have spent time to add Dynamic Lighting on the map, walls, lights, doors, etc.

After doing work on NPCs and handouts for the last few months, I went back today to finish working on the maps to add the NPCs to the maps, add some environment effects, music, etc. and I discovered that the grids on several of the maps were messed up. I had set the grids so that one cell (70px) represented 3 ft. But, the grid on one map had grid cells so small that it appeared that, for example, one chair was 6ft wide. The cells were the correct size - i.e. 3ft - but chairs were 2 cells instead of 1 cell.

On another map, the cells were too big. That is, an area that should have been 75ft long (i.e. 25 cells) was only 30ft long (i.e. 10 cells).

I think the map itself is the correct size but I don't have the original jpgs around to check them.

I tried to resize the cells. On the maps where the cells were too big, I was able to make them smaller. But, on maps where the cells were too small, I couldn't make them bigger.

If this isn't making sense, maybe some pictures will help.

Map:

Current settings:

Attempted change:

What Roll20 converts that into:

How do I fix the sizes of the cells on the maps where the cells are too small without redoing the maps from scratch again? Or is what I'm seeing a bug in the system that can be fixed?

Hello there, My friends and I are working on a collaborative map, and today we all encountered a major issue with map-making: All maps contain multiple images on the map-making layer, as usual. However, when one of us reloads the game, seemingly random objects are pushed forward or backward within the layer, making the maps unusable for gameplay. Additionally, selecting all tokens (Ctrl+A) and bringing them forward no longer works as it used to. Previously, this action would invert the order of the map elements (the closest would move farthest, etc.), but that no longer seems to be the case. Is anyone else experiencing similar issues with token order on a layer ?
February 11 (1 month ago)

Just confirming the above issue.  Checked my jumpgate games and the 'z' axis of images on the map layer are all messed up.  This occurs over several games where the background image is now appearing over many of the other images on the map layer.  Not all of the foreground images were behind the background image, so (with limited data) it appears more random.

Sending help center request.
