High Processor Usage(Chrome)

Hey all -- see here for the exciting announcement on our major project that will address these performance issues in a comprehensive, future-proof way. https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/11708912/announcing-project-jumpgate-our-modern-overhaul-of-the-roll20-vtt/?pageforid=11708912#post-11708912

Thanks!

Another update, Friday's session went very smoothly,  at one point the fan turned on (!!!) and I realized I hadn't been able to run Roll20 without the fan kicking into high gear in a long, long while

I'm not sure what happened, since the improvements haven't been released yet, but Roll20 performance has returned to "start of COVID" levels of performance for me on both Firefox and Chrome (2019 Macbook Pro with Radeon Pro 5500M 8G).

January 07 (1 year ago)

For the sake of contributing to the discourse around CPU usage issues, I'll share my experiences...

As of the last 2-3 months, every time I use Roll20, I have experienced extremely high CPU and power usage on my system, even on new games, on maps with no features, images, tokens, or lighting, and with the audio chat and camera feeds disabled. Within seconds of opening the tab, my fan will start roaring, and all apps will start lagging. As soon as I switch to another tab (not the R20 UI) the computer calms down again, and my fan stops revving. If I go back, it starts again, and my fan is blowing hot air like a furnace.

This behaviour is the same on both Chrome and Firefox. This was not happening in the past, and my system and browsers have had no significant updates or configuration changes in recent months.

To be clear, this is quite apart from the usual chaotic occurrence of varied bugs or performance hiccups that have always been experienced week-to-week on R20. This is something relatively new.

For me, nothing has changed! I have the EXACT SAME behavior as DMZ. I open the game I want to play on Roll20 and shortly after my fans are at max! And even on a white page with NO IMAGE or anything on it, GPU wants to reach new heights! It is not CPU but GPU. And last Friday when Playing my whole Desktop went Black for a short time and back on Roll20 the Map was not displayed! Had to reload the campaign to see the Map / Tokens again!

When Switching to another tab, everything cools down again. In order to keep Playing on Roll20 I ALWAYS have a new Browser tab opened and switch to it whenever I don't need the Roll20 tab to do things. Otherwise I'd not be able to do anything! SAME goes btw. when I am preparing for an upcoming game! (And this is HIGHLY ANNOYING!)

January 17 (1 year ago)

It is really bad tonight. I tried it on Edge as some people suggested. I set ALL my Edge processes to Low Priority in the Details tab.

Still getting input lag and my fan is working overtime any time the Roll20 tab is facing. It's quite ridiculous that this has been going on for some people for such a long time, and apparently there's no fix. With all the graphical improvements and announcements, we're still dealing with making the interface functional at a BASIC level without hosing my system. I don't want to move the game to some other VTT, but Roll20 is becoming -actually unusable-.

Project Jumpgate (Riley's post above) should hopefully address any remaining performance issues. Take a look at the video posted on the blog. 100 simultaneous animations on the same page, with no lag.

Yes, there are improvements. BUT GPU is still near 100% even for an empty game that has absolutely no content... And this should definitely NOT be the case!

Having come back to Roll20 after a few months, it _is_ now sensibly playable (if not exactly smooth) for me - at least in a small game but with dynamic lighting, walls, windows, doors and explorer mode.

BUT I still have to turn the video chat off completely (and was using Discord on my phone). Otherwise CPU usage increases to 700+% and absolutely cripples everything on my machine, slowly getting worse over the course of minutes until I have to kill and reload the page (or even the browser).

We can use video in Rool20 but still have to use a google meet for audio because the Roll20 chat keeps dropping in and out.  It's OK if video stutters or freezes intermittently but the audio stuttering makes it unusable.   Still hoping this continues to get better but, wow, this is taking for-evar.

Robert, can you verify which Chat Tech you are using? My group has been using the current chat tech for a couple of years now, with nothing but an occasional hiccup, usually fixed with the reconnect button.

Sigh.  Please don't reply with "works for me", it's infuriating and dismissive.  I'm happy it works for you, but how would you feel if I suggested you were lying about it working because you were a Forum Champion?

We abandoned legacy a long time ago because that isn't even stable for video; we are using the integrated video/audio with audio muted.

Several of us have to hit reconnect multiple times a session to keep the video running.   Audio is worse.

Hi Robert.

Sorry, that was absolutely not my intent. I would never suggest someone was lying. The reason I mentioned it is that there are some people still using the legacy system, which as you have noted is far less stable. Mentioning that my experience with the new system is better than with the old, is to convince people to give the current tech a try. Many people were burned by the legacy tech and have never investigated further. That's why I asked which chat tech you were using.

The other times I say that I am not experiencing an issue on my end is to reassure the user that there is probably a solution to whatever is vexing them on their end. Never to say that "the problem obviously doesn't exist", but to say "there is hopefully a solution, lets dig deeper."

Once again, I am sorry if this came off any other way.

PS. I can suggest some troubleshooting Help Center articles, but if you would prefer I leave the conversation, that's cool too.

February 01 (11 months ago)

Just ran a game tonight on Chrome [Wednesday]. We use Discord for voice and Roll20 for video. There are 6 players and the GM [me]. Once everyone is in game and we start with any map, the game lags ridiculously, even to the point where I have to 'refresh' the screen/game and get back in. If I open too many sheets, or have too many character tokens on the page, the lag gets far worse... to the point where we all just start talking about other stuff until a roll or screen chat or anything else updates.

I did notice that when I refreshed and came back into the game, our video was off [as default, I guess], and the lag was significantly less. That's part of the problem obviously, but is unfortunate because we prefer the video inclusion in our gaming.  I've turned off as much of the dynamic lighting as possible, and any other 'assists' like building maps outside of Roll20 then importing them, etc. But, should I *really* have to do that? I'm paying for something that works half-assed at times. By reading this thread, it seems to be a recurring issue that has unfortunately lasted for years.

I'd just like to know if anyone knows if they will, truly, make this work like they say it should or is there some other 'fix' I haven't tried? Or, are we going to have to live with this as it is....?

Hi Syber Duke!

A number of fixes have gone towards this problem, but it seems to have proven very difficult to diagnose: some people are critically affected by it, others are not and there doesn't seem to be a smoking gun. There is some very good news on the horizon, though. If you scroll up to the top of this page (9), there is a post from Founder-in-Residence Riley, announcing Project Jumpgate, due to enter public beta testing very soon. There are more details in his link, but this is basically a complete re-write of the underlying code of Roll20, using modern tools and technology. Roll20's base code is over ten years old in some places, so hopefully this will sidestep the lag problem some folks are laboring under. The previews look very promising.

February 01 (11 months ago)

Hi Steve,

Seeing as it's been five months since they said they would start testing a fix that would adress this particular issue I wouldn't get my hopes up of having this fixed untill they've fully implemented their new system. (Yes, were basically kick-starting project jumpgate with our subs)

The problem seemingly isn't widespread enough to be addressed sooner. So, by roll20's own admission, this problem will sadly at least persist for another couple of months.

As a sidenote to @keith, it's great to have an enthusiastic member of the community that is willing to help out. So please don't be bummed out by our frustration. Your tips have (and are helping) people!

However, most of the people in this thread have been trying "everything" mentioned in help sections, posted technical data,  tried out workarounds and supposed fixes fo this pretty big problem.

And we've been doing that for over a year now (!)

We would love to share in your enthusiasm (and mostly your play experience), but we can't because nothing we can do on our end will actually fix this. (roll20 have admitted as much)

I've been in this chat for 8 months ... certainly not leaving over something as minor as this :-P

I have multiple posts including system configurations, debugging steps I've taken and performance observations for multiple browsers; so I'm probably overly sensitive to "have you turned it on and off again" :-)

February 04 (11 months ago)

Any idea when the Jumpgate beta is going to be released? (I get that they said Q1 2024, but I'm looking for a more specific date since that announcement was over a month ago and we've not had any word since)  I'm pretty tired of my 13900k processor not being able to run a VTT smoothly.  Foundry is looking more and more appealing since every time I boot up Roll20 I'm reminded that my supercomputer cant run it without major issues.

I am experiencing all the same massive CPU increases in Chrome, but only when running Roll20. Once Roll20 is shut down it all goes back to normal. It is definitely a Roll20 problem.

This is ridiculous and why is this not being addressed?

I am Pro subscription right now, but have shut off my subscription and will be searching new VTT's if it is not fixed soon. I have been with Roll20 for almost 10 years now. Never seen it like this, ever. Very disappointing to see Roll20 ending like this...

Hi Master MJ!

This has been an ongoing problem for a small* but persistent portion of the Roll20 user base for slightly over a year. It has proven very difficult to pin down why it has been happening for these users. Looking through the forum reports, there does not appear to be a smoking gun. Did this behavior start for you recently, or has it been going on for the time period indicated? If there have been any changes in your hardware/software since the problem began affecting you? Any data would help the dev team.

*small is a relative but loaded term. If anyone reading this post is suffering under the CPU issue, please do not take this as dismissive. I have no actual data on the number affected, so must proceed anecdotally.

Master MJ said:

They either don't know how to fix it or the fix would require removing certain features for which other users don't experience any issues, so they've made the strategic decision that the current state is better overall for the future of the platform.

The only reliable fix to still using Roll20 is to use a different device that isn't affected by the issue.

The problem is so strange.  I have (2) computers that I run roll20 on, both of them have high end hardware, both of them have the 100% cpu issue when running roll20

My first PC is
Intel i9 13900k processor
64gb DDR 5 ram
Asus 4080 ROG video card
Asus z790 motherboard
1500w PSU
Lian Li liquid cooled full tower

2nd PC is
Intel i7 9700k processor
64gb DDR 4 ram
Asus 1080ti Video Card
Asus z690 motherboard
800w PSU
Coolermaster 932 HAF (air cooled)

both PC's have the issue.

On my 2nd PC I literally wiped the entire PC clean and have 0 software on it other than whats needed to make it run.  I figured it had to be a software conflict somewhere.  And was just going to use that 2nd pc as my Roll20 pc. I don't even have discord on it.  I run voice though my other PC... and it still somehow maxxes my processor out when I'm on roll20.

Hi Keith, it has been going on since I returned late in 2023 with a new computer. Problem still happening today. trying to run games in Chrome.

NEW COMPUTER
HP Envy22
Windows 11 Home
Processor: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11700 @ 2.50GHz   2.50 GHz
RAM:  128 GB (128 GB usable)
Display: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650

Once I close out Roll20 launched game, all problems end. Otherwise, launched Roll20 games max out my CPU usage.

Thanks Master MJ!

For clarity, I am not a Roll20 team member or dev. I'm just trying to help folks give good data to the dev team here. It might help them if you sent that information, along with the specs on the previous computer that wasn't(?) having the problem. A Help Center Request would get the data into an actual ticket, and prevent it from becoming potentially lost in a forum post.

I'll toss my hat into the ring as I just finished cleaning up and installing basic software on a new laptop and have the same experience as many others.

Windows 11 Home 10.0.22631
i7-12700h
RTX 4070 mobile (140w)
32GB RAM (DDR4-3200)

Chrome Version 122.0.6261.70 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Edge Version 121.0.2277.128 (Official build) (64-bit)

Having just installed both browsers, I haven't tweaked any settings from default.

Map is 38x28 at 70 px with what I'd describe as medium detail (a dozen tokens on the Token layer, approximately 30 overlapping & layered ground/snow/tree/boulder/footprint/wagon track images on the Map layer.  Dynamic Lighting is on and five light sources are on the map.

When displaying this map in Edge, GPU utilization averages ~30% with jumps to ~45% as I move tokens around the screen or scroll across the map.  Scrolling and token movement is smooth.  When I open a blank tab in Edge (effectively hiding Roll20), GPU drops to ~2%.

In Chrome, GPU utilization immediately jumps to ~75% with spikes to 100% just from displaying the same map (no scrolling or token movement).  Moving tokens or scrolling across the map sustains GPU utilization north of 85%.  Scrolling and token movement is jerky.  When I open a blank tab in Chrome (effectively hiding Roll20), GPU drops to ~2%.

This thread appears promising - https://www.reddit.com/r/Roll20/comments/185hiod/roll20_lag_solved/.  I will try it and report back shortly.

The recommendations in this thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/Roll20/comments/185hiod/roll20_lag_solved/ - yielded an immediate and dramatic improvement in my Roll20 performance in Chrome.

Before making the changes noted in that thread my GPU utilization averaged ~75% with spikes to 100% in Chrome, now (after those changes) I'm averaging 20% GPU utilization with spikes to 30% when moving tokens or scrolling.

Per that thread, this 'fix' works for PCs that have both an integrated GPU (on the processor itself) as well as a dedicated GPU (external video card), which is likely a fair number of people experiencing this problem.  I put quotes around 'fix' because this change is just forcing Chrome to use my dedicated GPU, which uses a lot more power and generates more heat.  IMO, there's no reason Roll20 on Chrome should require a dedicated GPU.

If you try it, make sure to completely close and restart Chrome afterward.

Interestingly, I get a pop-up in Roll20 when using these settings telling me that hardware acceleration is disabled:

  • Graphics Performance Notification - We have detected that you may be using an unsupported system or browser, or that hardware acceleration may be disabled due to a setting in your browser or an installed extension

However, performance is greatly improved so I think I'll leave it as-is.

February 26 (10 months ago)

I have had the same problem for a couple of years now.

On my Macbook Pro with 3.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM and Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 1536 MB the CPU goes to 100% when the Roll20 tab is displayed.

My desktop PC doesn't have this problem. However, the CPU does increase to around 40%-50% when the Roll20 tab is active. It has Windows 10, Intel Core i7 6700K overclocked to 4.6GHz, 16 GB and RAM and a GTX 1080 graphics card.

On both machines I use the latest Chrome browser.

Doing a little research in Chrome using the DevTools Performance monitor I found that the amount of listeners increased over time and then drop back down (probably after a garbage collection). However, not all of the listeners would be dropped. This meant that the memory graph would show something resembling saw teeth. I noticed that this saw teeth graph was getting steeper over time suggesting a memory leak. I don't know why so many listeners need to be created but my guess (and it is an intelligent guess) is that something is running in the background that needs to be constantly updated such as the Dynamic Lighting even though I'm are using the free licence and don't have the Dynamic Lighting. Is it possible that Dynamic LIghting is still running but just not visible since it is only a layer on top of the map.

I wanted to take a screenshot of this saw teeth diagram but for some reason Chrome is no longer displaying the memory graph. So instead the screenshot is of the Roll20 web page with the DevTool visible and the actions I did to display the graph in case someone wants to see it for themselves.

I also noticed that the CPU was OK when the Roll20 screen was shrunk down either by making the browser window smaller or by displaying the DevTools Window suggesting that the problem is with the map portion of the web page.

There is a saw-toothed graph about a third of the way down the dev tools display. Is that the same as the one you saw?

No, it's a different graph. The graph you're referring to is the RAM but it does look like that with the saw teeth going in the same direction. The amount of RAM and the number of listeners is probably related.

Thank you 150% for this link and fix Chad. Instantly made a difference. No more lag and GPU usage back to average. Thanks so much!

Hard to give a definitive answer on that. Our group (4-PC, 1-Mac) has never run into this issue. Which frustrates me in reverse, as it make it hard to help. There has been some initial positive reporting on this matter in the Jumpgate response thread, but most of the talk has been focused on feature parity. I'll see if I can dig up some quotes.

Only post specifically mentioning CPU/GPU numbers:

1. My machine Win 11, Intel I7, 16Gb and 620 onboard graphics card & Firefox, map 50x30 with dynamic lighting;
Original Roll20 CPU ~50%, GPU ~75% Jumpgate CPU ~30% GPU 99%
Subjectively felt a bit slicker moving around
2. Player 1 Linux Mint lenovo laptop, 16Gb, not sure of processor/gpu probably onboard & Firefox, map 50x30 with dynamic lighting;
Original Roll20 CPU ~85 GPU ~80% Jumpgate CPU 100%, GPU unknown, could not display the map at all (black screen) and the m/c crashed after 3-5mins of trying.
Unusable
3. Player 2 Win 10, Intel I7, 8Gb and 610? onboard graphics card & Firefox, map 50x30 with dynamic lighting;
Original Roll20 CPU ~70%, GPU ~80% Jumpgate CPU ~30% GPU 99%
Subjectively felt a bit slicker moving around, said the had a couple of 'stutters' moving around the map - probably the GPU maxing out.
None of my players use Chrome due to it being a memory/processor hog. Gonna try and repeat these tests without dynamic lighting as that's almost certainly the cause. Reduction of CPU usage is welcome, although it appears to have been achieved by offloading much more onto the GPU, this is going to cause issues for anyone using onboard graphics.

Riley noted at the time that recent changes in Firefox had caused a performance hit on that browser. I don't know if that was resolved, I don't typically use Firefox.

I would add that posts regarding performance have been (almost) universally positive.

Thanks for scrounging the forums Keith, glad to see people are apparently enjoying the recent updates enough for this post to go silent for a bit..

You could try contacting the team with a Help Center Request. Either to report specific CPU issues, or to request a refund, if you have not had Pro for that long. Sorry it did not work out for you.

Edit for extra question: Have you tried Chad's suggestion above?

Edited June 02 (7 months ago)

I know this doesn't help, but it still looks like this is an issue specific to individual machines. In our player group, only one person is experiencing this issue  (our only MAC user) and he's just resorted to buying a laptop stand with a cooling fan plus a second fan blowing across his laptop while we play. He oddly got a little reduction in cpu usage when he bought a new external monitor.

When I was maintaining the network and PCs at my old office, I had eight identical Windows based workstations, all leased from the same manufacturer at the same time. All but one worked equally well except for one workstation that would run hot (fans blowing like a G7 ready for takeoff) when running one specific application (Solidworks). An on-site service call resulted in the tech finding nothing wrong with that workstation. Since they couldn't find anything wrong, they refused to replace it, so I eventually ended up relegating the problematic workstation to an employee that didn't need to run that particular app. The mystery was never solved. We eventually replaced all the workstations at the end of the lease and the problem disappeared.

I had a feeling this was very hardware specific, seeing as only half of my player group has this issue.

However, needing to buy 3 new computers might be a bit much just to run a simple vtt. So ill guess its back to the drawing board for me.

Ive used roll20 for years, and have been a pro user for most of that time.

The last year and a half most of the features have been unusable for me and, judging by this thread, quite a few others as well, despite all our effort to find out what is wrong and submitting tickets.

It seems some of this got fixed for some users with the new updates, all the better for them.

If it helps in any way, the very same issue is happening on the new One D&D character sheet test. So whatever it is that causes this, is likely even present in game elements that don't even load the map area, chat, etc in the first place.

Edit 1 month later: Guess not.

My wife is having this issue on her PC. No other sites or games will act out of the ordinary, but Roll20 crashes the entire computer every time. CPU spiking into high 90%. We've tried everything short of hardware upgrades and/or replacing the computer entirely. None of the previous suggestions on this thread have helped in any way.

Just to verify, that includes trying both classic and jumpgate games?

We actually happened to narrow the issue down to her mouse. It was a light-up gaming mouse which I’m assuming either needs an update or is fried. We plugged in a stock mouse and the site worked perfectly. Insane what a mouse can apparently do…

This issue has not been fixed.

Yep it's amazing how long this issue has been going on.  I have ALOT of money sank into this pile of shit service and I've finally given up on it and canceled my sub.  Wish I could sell all the content I purchased so it would not be a complete loss.  Oh well, that will teach me to buy digital goods.

I am experiencing the issue described by many, where when Roll20 is active CPU goes up to 100% but when I click away from it it's down to like 33%.

Damn, this is absurd.

I'm currently using Google Chrome, but looking through the Task Manager, my web browser's GPU Process takes up an average of 170 CPU units.

The frame rate drops way below 20-30 fps. Even dragging tokens around the lobby page of the game which barely anything on the page is choppy.

This gaming rig can easily handle Unreal 5 at high-quality settings hitting 60 fps on a very regular basis and yet on this web browser using Roll 20 it's ultra choppy.

** UPDATE **

Issue has been fixed after updating Google Chrome to its latest...

I still have this problem, 4 year old Lenovo Thinkbook, 16GB. Roll20 is eating RAM and CPU like nothing else, and whenever I launch a game room everything else slows down significantly. Down to the response time of me clicking the mouse.

The last week it's been worse, and taken seconds for Roll20 to respond to clicks or keys at all.

I'm playing D&D5e, and I am holding off buying the new rulebooks for now, considering whether to change VTT.

Hi all,

Experienced GM but inexperienced with VTTs. I have tended to run all of my online games on Zoom, but starting a Blades in the Dark campaign with players who don't know the system so I want to be able to all see character/crew sheets and share dice rolls easily.

Using no map, no lighting, just a blank white window, I experienced huge CPU use as above on Chrome, running on an oldish MacBook (still running Ventura) you can literally see the battery power decreasing when not plugged in. Switched to Safari, and despite a pop up that says I should use Firefox or Chrome, it runs like a dream.

I came into this skeptical about the benefits of VTTs in general. I didn't really see how they make games better than just using a zoom call and a physical battle map. The amount of expense and messing around this has entailed is so far not persuading me otherwise.
