D&D 5th Edition by Roll20

November 06 (4 months ago)

I was doing some testing of attacks&damage with the new 2024 sheet/rules and rolled a "1" for an attack. The chat proclaimed that it was a "fumble". This is incorrect. A "1" is an automatic "miss", not a "fumble". There are no "fumble" conditions defined in the 2024 PHB. If the DM wants to call it a fumble, or have a homebrew rule, he can, but the rules say it's just a "miss". Yes, it's a minor point. But, this is how misinformation gets out.

Hi Saul!

Can you scroll back up to that spot and capture a screen shot? That might be helpful for the team to narrow down the issue.

Sure:

Very valid point, then. that text should not be there.

November 07 (4 months ago)

Especially given how terrible design fumble rules are and how often new dms fall for them - that word should definitely not appear on a nat 1. It'll make many players suffer.

Anyone else having an issue when using the charactermancer, when the only option for stat assignment is custom?

Hi Hel,

Could you elaborate where you are using the Charactermancer (In the VTT or Roll20 Characters?)? And confirm the sheet is the 2014 sheet?

I am using the 2014 sheet in Roll20 Characters.  I've also submitted a ticket about it

So a bit to unpack here:
1) You need to make sure you own the Player's Handbook in order to have the other options OR see #2 (Also see note below)
2) Alternately, you need to send the character into a game that has access to the book(s) to gain those options in the Roll20 Character's Charactermancer.

Note: I am seeing that even with the books purchased #1 is not working. So please use #2 to set up your character until #1 is fixed.

Hey Hel,

Sorry about that. We recently made a change to the Free Basic Rules for 2014 (which used to be called the SRD on Roll20) that added it to the Content-sharing options. This change caused the problem you were seeing to resurface. We've quickly fixed that and you should be able to see these options once again. Thanks again for reporting the issue. Let us know if you have any other problems. We really appreciate your help!

Today the "5th Edition OGL by Roll20 Companion Script" did not work any more, both in a jumpgate and legacy game I tried. The other scripts I have installed like "Rest in Style" still work so the scripting engine is running. It still worked last week.

The following returns an empty list. It should have one entry. In my version at the moment in line 42.

    var list = findObjs({name: cname, type: 'character'},{caseInsensitive: true});

As the following worked in the script "Hit Dice Handling"

    var character = findObjs({ name: cname, type: 'character' })[0];

I experimented and found that the first command and the whole script works again if I remove the second parameter ",{caseInsensitive: true}".

So the source of the problem seems to be an intentional API change or a bug.

Regards, Rune B.

... works again.

Does anybody know how to go back into the character creator once you have left it?
I still have to choose languages and can't go back or add some to my sheet (only remove them).

Go to attributes & abilities and blank l1mancer_status value

January 06 (2 months ago)

You should be able to drag&drop the languages from the Compendium onto your sheet.

I'm having some issues with the 2014 character sheet. Any time I try to make a character in the charactermancer, I manage to reach the equipment section and then the drop down menus disappear. I am unable to create any new characters.

Am I missing something on the compendium? I have the players handbook 2024 but when I use the compendium in game it doesn't show me what the different weapon masteries are. Just shows their source.

No, you aren't technically missing anything. It's just very difficult to find. If you type in "Mastery" and scroll down about seven screens' worth, it's there under the "Rules" category. However, if you click the Rules category to begin with, Weapon masteries doesn't even appear. Neither does it appear if you type in "mastery", "weapon mastery" or "Weapon Masteries", even though the latter is literally the name of the link.

This is a brand new rule that likely needs frequent reference. It should be easier to find.

This looks similar to the behavior in the 2014 compendiums, where the search function isn't able to find information buried under a general heading. Often the search just gets you to the first page of a section that may contain what you're looking for. I think that compendium search is dependent on tags within the pages instead of an actual text search.

Yeah, I think it's clear that the entry is tagged/indexed, just not in a way that responds to a general search. Just very specific ones.

Not sure if redundant but recently found this out when one of my players said his AC was acting weird (D&D 5e 2014). Chain mail was adding 16 to his base 10 AC instead of the usual of overwriting it. I went and tested on another character with Leather armor and instead of adjusting the AC to be 11+DEX it became 10+DEX+11 from the armor. We've also had complaints of skill expertise/proficiency acting funky.

What's weird is i went to an older campaign and tried two things. 1. I made a new sheet in the older game and the same issues happened. 2. Took an older character and tried to recreate the issue and it didn't happen.

I've looked all over trying to see if something is enabled that's screwing with us but nothing seems out of the ordinary. And it only seems to be happening on games/sheets made within the last couple of months. I'm at my wits end.

Hi Just Joshin',

Is this in Jumpgate or Legacy Roll20?
How is the armor being added? (Compendium or Charactermancer)
Is this character in Roll20 Characters, only a game, or both?
What is the source you are using for the armor?

Edit: nevermind, I confirmed it in a Legacy game, Compendium, only the game, and PHB 2014 for the source.
Only the PHB 2014 source is having the issue.

To get you up and running, hover your mouse over the armor in your equipment. Click the little info dot on the weight.
Change this line: Item Type: Armor, AC: 16, Stealth:Disadvantage
To this: Item Type: Heavy Armor, AC: 16, Stealth:Disadvantage

That will get it fixed properly.

For Leather armor it is:
Change this line: Item Type: Armor, AC: 11
To this: Item Type: Light Armor, AC: 11

As you can see, it is the armor type that got lost somehow. I suspect the Devs made a change to bring the 2014 PHB into line with the 2024 Compendium and it broke things.

That's what i did for now as a band-aid solution while I waited. It was happening in both Legacy and Jumpgate so I wasn't sure. Thank you so much for confirming that it seems to be on the Dev side!! I was worried I somehow messed up something. Here's to hoping it is resolved soon, till then I'll just mama bird my player's sheets a little more and be on the lookout for any other goofiness that might come up. I was hoping having 2024 disabled would have spared me from anything like this :/

Thank you again!

EDIT: I totally understand and see the difference now in the older sheets that work. You're a lifesaver, big thanks once more! <3

Odd intermittant issue.

About 24 Hours ago when playing a game, we got this issue - no damage rolled - though only affected Kobolds not their ally!

Though the issue went away after a while.

Now I have the same issue... on a new NPC I have just created, and Kobolds (both clicking attacks still visible from yesterday and new attacks today), but not the ally!

On the face of it - seems to be related to this time of day, but surely not?

Hi Just Joshin' and Gauss! Yes, Gauss's guess was more-or-less correct: this was an issue with a change to data. We spotted this yesterday and the issue has been fixed. If you still have items that have Item Type: Armor instead of Item Type: Light Armor or Item Type: Heavy Armor, you can fix them by changing them to the correct type, as Gauss suggested, or you can delete them and re-drag them from the Compendium. Thanks for the report Just Joshin', and thanks for the assist in the meantime, Gauss!

I can't get anything to drag and drop onto the NPC sheet. I tried with Chrome and Firefox on old and newly created games. Spells, monsters, and weapons all failed to do anything. When I enabled the PHB content again, I was able to successfully drag and drop spells and weapons onto the sheet.

EDIT: I tested this with a new character created as an NPC directly (New Character-> Click Create NPC button).

I also created a new character with the option "Edit Sheet Directly". That one allowed me to add a longsword, but spells still did not work, and the field where you choose a class said "Loading...".

When I ran the charactermancer to turn it into a level 1 human wizard, the charactermancer told me that I didn't have spells at my level. I also was not able to choose any means of ability score assignment except Custom, and the Charactermancer would hang on an empty modal window when I told it to build the character.

I'll give it a shot over here, Brian. Is this:
Jumpgate or Classic?
Dual Sheet or 2014 only?
If dual, which sheet is base?

OK, I just fired up my old Classic game, after disabling the PHB. I opened a skeleton sheet and was able to drag  a longsword +2 from the FBR14 source onto the sheet. I was also able to drag a lich over the open sheet to overwrite the character, and then was able to drag the "Acid Arrow" spell onto the lich. These all worked from the FBR14. Let me know if I misunderstood something that might invalidate the tests.

This doesn't explain why you are not getting results, but it does show that it's not a universal issue. Since you have tried different games and browsers, perhaps it's a VPN or ad blocker issue?

If this is not the case, I suggest capturing a Console Log (Chrome, Firefox) and filing a Help Center Request. Maybe the team can use this info to find out why your games are not communicating with the FBR14.

I added a console log to my help request. I have tried with and without VPN.

I believe that when the error is fixed with loading the classes drop down on the PC character sheet and loading of Charactermancer, that the drag and drop will be fixed as well. I am getting a lot of CSP errors in the Chrome console.

As another weird addition, when I use private browsing on Chrome or Firebox, I am unable to search for anything on the Compendium tab.

I was able to execute the drag and drop on my phone and verify that it worked on the computer. Which means something is serious borked on my computer.

Resetting Chrome made the situation worse. Now I cannot access the compendium from within the VTT.

Thanks Keith for pointing me in the right direction. I went through all my connection settings, and a reset of NordVPNs browsing protection had blocked the compendium within the VTT. Temporarily turning it off allowed access.

Hi folks, regarding the Monster Manual 2024 being placed onto D&D 5e 2014 by Roll20 character sheets. One of the difficulties is how the 2024 rules do initiative is different than the 2014 rules.

2014 rules: the Initiative bonus is just Dexterity modifier
I cannot think of any creatures which have a bonus different from their Dexterity modifier. If you can think of any, please let me know.

2024 rules: Dexterity modifier plus whatever value WotC decided to give the creature.
This can be difficult to deal with.

Well, there is hope. The D&D 5e 2014 by Roll20 sheet has a field on the PC side of the sheet that applies to the NPC side as well.
1) Open the NPC's character sheet.
2) Hover just above and to the right of the Actions section and click the cog.
3) Scroll down and where it says Character Sheet Type switch to PC.
4) On the right hand side of the sheet where it says Core, Bio, Spells, "cog" click the cog.
5) In the middle column near the top is a field that says Initiative Modifier. Put the difference between the 2024 Initiative modifier and the 2014 Initiative modifier in that field. (2024 initiative modifier - 2014 initiative modifier = difference)
For example: The 2014 Iron Golem has an initiative modifier of 0. The 2024 Iron Golem has an initiative modiifer of 9. 9-0 = 9. So we would put a 9 in the "Initiative Modifier" field.
6) On the third column near the top is a field that says "Character Sheet Type", switch that to NPC.
7) Click the cog on the top right corner to close editing.
8) Test the initiative to make sure it is the correct value.

If you have a Pro account you can do all of this with the script ChatSetAttr.
Here is the command for that:

!setattr --sel --initmod|[[?{2024 initiative bonus?}-(@{selected|Dexterity_mod})]]

Note: if the 2014 creature has an initiative modifier that is different than just the Dexterity modifier the command will need to be adjusted.

Feature Request : Configurable values for Standard Array in character creation

Brief Description:

It would be very useful if the default array could be configurable for any campaign.

Not everyone uses the standard default array - for example, my current game is for kids and I'm allowing a "heroic" array (17, 16, 15, 13, 11, 7)

Standard array is particularly useful when playing with kids because it keeps scores fairer.
There is a work around (using custom) but that allows errors

BTW, also good (but I'm sure, it would be stretching the friendship :)) would be to allow an additional +1 to one and -1 to another - to allow a little more fine-tuning by players.  This is the rule I use with my kids. Modified standard array, and an addition -1 to one ability for an additional +1 to one other.

An alternative to this fix would be more info on how to add scripts into the creation process/charactermancer so I could alter the array myself.

Feature Request : DM control of Ability Score Method options

Brief Description:

The DM should have the ability to define which Ability Score Methods are available for a particular game/campaign.

This would probably be best handled with options in the Default Sheet Settings
