Map pins sound a lot like what I always envisioned a Point of Interest addon would look like. One of the things I've been exploring is trying to do something that drives more immersion and such by employing more character/player specific knowledge. I feel it drives the conversations around my table more and it's less of a group effort/knowledge of everything. The point of interest system I'd employ would be a token placed by the GM with some script capabilities. POI tokens are placed by GM. Player moves to POI, and gets a popup with some prepopulated information (Description of item, etc) then as part of that same script it could offer the player a choice to use a pre-determined skill with a DC check, which then on positive, gives the player more information, or the fail, not much information. Example: Player moves to POI, clicks on it, "You see a plant with thorns and red flowers" Choice: [Use Knowledge Nature], or [Use Survival] Selected Choice: [Use Knowledge Nature], (Behind scenes, GM has set DC for more information at DC 15; but could possibly be a gradient/tier DC10 gives X info, DC15 X+Y; DC20 X+Y+Z) Roll + Skill beats DC 10. Player receives additional popup information from POI: "You know this plant to be a rare rose that comes from the southern continent and is known for it's medicine qualities" The thought is then not all players are having the same experience, and getting joint knowledge everytime. Maybe the player keeps the information to themselves, or maybe they use it as character development, "How odd, this rose bush isn't from around here, could it be a clue to who used to live here?"
