Session 363 - Out for Blood Romilly, Goblin Barbarian, Level 6 (Summer) Echo, Thylean Siren Rogue, Level 6 (Lena C) Horus, Thylean Minotaur Barbarian, Level 6 (Mekapix) Sabiha bint Habivi, Serpentine Lamia Sorcerer/Warlock, Level 9 (Zilarrezko) This mission was undertaken by myself, Sabiha, Romilly, and Echo. We discussed what our plan was, and while Sabiha wished to tackle the Ogres of Lutherria in the Mitral Mines, the rest of us felt that we needed to go and try to put a stop to Zakroth before he could cause any more trouble for Aresia. We knew that he had fled to the Oldwood, so that was our destination, but we first decided to see the oracle and see what she could tell Romilly and Echo about their future. We managed to get to her without incident and asked about Romilly and Echo's future. The oracle said that the two of them had an interesting fate that was tied to the heroes of destiny, if fate would allow it apparently. She also said that their fate could be closely tied to Sabiha's, though it is unclear how. Romilly asked how they could fulfill their destiny, and the oracle said that two others had recently asked the same. I realised she must have been referring to myself and Nephenee. I asked if the way to find their destiny was the same as what she had told us, which she confirmed. This meant that the two of them would need to travel to a necropolis, so I invited them both to come with us when we would head there. Echo did make a comment about whether or not she was worthy of such a thing, but I tried to reassure her that there was more to her than she thought. As we headed out, Echo did stay back to talk to the oracle a bit more, but we headed to the Sour Vintage after she was done. We travelled to the Sour Vintage in good time and decided to stop in, partially to rest for a bit and partially to gather information on Zakroth's potential location. We got some food to eat as we spoke to the innkeep, Aetala, about Zakroth's potential location. She said that there was someone in the woods gathering a number of creatures, most notable were Gygans, these large humanoids known for having one eye, six arms, and being incredibly strong. She also advised us that it would be extremely foolhardy to try and challenge him as his forces are recovering and he himself was very strong. I can't help but want to test my strength against him now, if I'm honest. After explaining this, Romilly began regaling the tale of how they had battled him before in the war on Aresia. We also found some rangers at our table, Romilly asked them if they wished to help us hunt down Gygans, and they very quickly refused. Understandable, they don't sound like common hunting game. We spent some time talking about how to handle the situation, and eventually decided that if we could not take him down, we could do some scouting out and information gathering to bring back to Aresia. This was when the rangers did give us some advice, well sort of, it was a rumour about the area but it was interesting nonetheless. If we travel to the Hill of Five Points, we will find a statue of a Gygan. If we attain the blood from that Gygan and cover ourselves in it, it will create an illusion to make us look like Gygans. However, the Gygan needed to be freed from its stone prison first, which could only be done by placing the blood of a Maened on the statue. I can't help but wonder where these rumours come from, who's the first person to discover these things? And how? Regardless, we needed to find a maened first, creatures that are very similar in form to Satyrs. We needed to be careful because maeneds are chaotic creatures that stopped following the Thylean gods and instead follow fey gods of lust and pleasure. I'm sure this would usually sound appealing to some but these creatures also revel in murder, and are known for luring in the unsuspecting wanderer with offers of pleasure, then take pleasure in brutally murdering them. Finding a Maened isn't easy, as they live in underground glades, but they can usually be found where there are goatling. The rangers told us that there was a group before that found an underground glade under a mossy temple. Caution was advised though, as the temple was said to be guarded by a blind Gygan called Manos. We did find that the temple was on our map, as it was a ruined temple of Sydon that had been visited before by Phage and Hadrian. We were to set off in the morning. Myself and Echo had a conversation that evening, while Sabiha went to visit a woman called Kyrah, which she later informed us was the goddess Kyrah. By what Sabiha told us the next morning, she had been playing music for Kyrah all night, and Kyrah came down a little after Sabiha had. Kyrah mentioned that she hadn't been performing recently as she had been in a bad mood after Phage, though we didn't enquire any further. We then collected our things and headed out to the temple. We managed to arrive in the section of the forest where the temple was situated, and came across a rather beautiful area. Well carved, yet very old stone columns stood in a clearing, the trees grew so large that the canopy blocked out the sunlight which darkened the area. There were also small creatures, squirrels and the like, that lived peacefully in this forest. It was rather serene until the ambient noise was broken by a loud voice called out for nobody. As in, calling out for someone named "Nobody." A gygan made its way into the clearing, it's one eye missing, and calling out for a "Nobody." We announced our presence and the creature asked if any of us was this Nobody, which we said we weren't. We managed to get the creature to tell us that while it was sleeping, someone had taken his eye and when he called out who had done it, the voice replied "Nobody." So that's who he was looking for. This was the gygan Manos we had heard about. What no one told us was that he was extremely stupid. He kept swinging his weapons around, almost hitting us on many occasions, because he believed we were the Nobody he was searching for. Luckily, while myself, Sabiha, and Romilly had been dealing with him, Echo had managed to scout the area a bit more and found the temple we were looking for. Deciding to leave Manos behind, we headed towards the temple, only for Echo to be attacked by a number of vines. The vines had managed to restrain her so I moved up and managed to cut through them, but Echo's startled scream drew Manos' attention, so we quickly made our way into the temple to avoid him. Entering the old temple, it was indeed in a ruined condition. Walls and columns were cracked, worn, or destroyed. What we did find was a oculus in the cieling that let light break into the room and shine onto adamantine mirror being held by a statue of Sydon, which reflected the light into a small hole in the floor. We could have taken the mirror, it seemed fairly large, but I think we decided that ruined or not, taking from a god's temple wouldn't be without consequence, so we left it. The hole wasn't very big, but Romilly was small enough to squeeze through it so we tied rope to her and let her descend. We were waiting for a few minutes before the rope went slack, and I pulled it up to find it had been untied. A few more minutes passed before we heard Romilly scream from another room in the temple. As she screamed, it had attracted Manos' attention and we had to act fast. Echo and Sabiha went into the other room to find Romilly, but Manos was moving after them. I knew that Sabiha and Echo were both capable of helping Romilly, so I decided to get Manos out of the way by running to the entrance to the temple and calling out to him, telling him I was Nobody and I had returned to finish him off. He was not the brightest, and fell for it easily, running out of the temple while I moved out of his way and let him. I caught up to the women but Romilly had been left in a bad position, and her clothes were ruined. Whatever attacked her must have had some acidic properties as Echo's arrows had been destroyed when they hit the creature. Though, the three of them had dealt with the creature and Manos was now out of the way, so we were able to progress as Romilly told us that there was a strange goat man that she had met in the hole, and showed her the stairs to get back, so we descended the staircase. We followed Romilly to a large room covered in grass and flowers, with a large tree stump. There we met the goatman that spoke a language only Sabiha knew, so she translated for us. It believed Romilly was an Aurae Nymph and so it tried to help her. Now we could communicate with him, we got him to take us to his mothers that were Maeneds. When we approached the room and saw them, I will admit that they were extremely attractive and I could see why they would be able to lure in others. They seemed to take a liking to me, and when we asked if we could have some of their blood, they said they would be able to give us some of their blood but in return, they needed help having more children. I declined the offer, due to my own personal reasons, but we were able to get their blood because they believed that Romilly was an Aurae Nymph, and as such, it would be rude for them to decline her request. After we got their blood, we left the temple and headed back to the Sour Vintage. Sabiha did ask why I declined the offer, and I attempted to explain that I was not sure how to deal with those who approach me so directly, and it made me uncomfortable. With my kind being seen as slaves for people to use for their entertainment, or as monsters that need to be destroyed or contained, I'm very unused to such... interactions. Sabiha did mention that they simply needed to hire someone who was more shy, but I explained I'd rather not be with someone who was hired for me. I do not need pity, and would rather take things at my pace. I may have gone off on a tangent there, I do apologise. Anyway, we returned to the Sour Vintage to rest again for the night, and we managed to get directions to the Hill of Five Points from the rangers. The innkeep did ask if we had given up on our quest, but we had simply completed the first part of a long plan. the next morning, we headed to the Hill of Five Points where we found, well, a hill with five points. Five standing stones, to be more accurate, around a statue of a huge Gygan. We began approaching the statue, and then we saw a woman sleeping against one of the standing stones. She woke up and walked over to us, she was wearing a robe and held a staff with a lightning bolt at the end. Her name was Merope and she told us she was a priest of Sydon that had been charged to watch the statue. She had been watching the statue, tasked to make sure it was not desecrated, for the past 5 or 10 years, I cannot remember which. Though she said her watch would be over soon, when the Oath of Peace ended. We asked if we were the only visitors she had recently, and she said that she did have a visitor recently, Zakroth, though she did describe him a pleasant. Zakroth had been by to ask if there was any way to free the Gygan, which Merope didn't know of. So, knowing what we had to do, we asked if waking the gygan counted as defiling the statue, to which she said it didn't. We also asked if it was awoken and became hostile, would she assist it as part of her charge. She actuallly explained that waking the statue would free her of her watch and she could return home. Having the answers we needed, we used the blood of the Maeneds to awaken the statue of the gygan. I'll be honest, I expected him to be more angry than he was, but he actually seeemed very grateful. Merope took this chance to leave with Sabiha's suggestion, and we began speaking to the gygan. He told us his name was Strophantes and he was a servant of Sydon. We did speak to him for a little, which included Romilly wrestlilng with it and succeeding, which impressed him. She also managed to get his blood from him as a thank you for releasing him. When it covered her, she became shrouded in an illusion that made her look like a gygan, though not as big as Strophantes. He then began to leave to go meet Sydon, which was an issue as Zakroth was also a follower of Sydon. It felt terrible to kill him after conversing with him, but we couldn't allow the two of them to work together, so we had to attack. The battle was tough. I did manage to grapple him, but it took a few attempts as he was far stronger than anyone I'd fought before, though I was able to get a few good hits in. Echo was able to get some skillfully placed shots from atop of one of the standing stones. Sabiha was able to use her hammer to destabilize and damage Strophantes before summoning her chains around him, and though he was able to break them, it did distract him. Romilly was able to get to the other side of him and attack, eventually earning the killing blow. After defeating him, we took his weapons and more of his blood, though it's unsure how long the blood will hold this ability, and then we sacrificed Strophantes' body to Pythor. We knew a plan of how to get into Zakroth's camp needed to be made, so we decided to leave the Oldwood for the time being, and head to Aresia to speak to the queen. We informed her of Zakroth's potential location and the plan we had in mind. She said that, while she wouldn't like it, it would probably be worth working with Mytros to defeat Zakroth. Sabiha also mentioned that she could speak with Pythor to see if Estoria could lend aid, and so the queen gave her a letter to deliver to Estoria. We decided to sell the spears we got, except Sabiha who wanted to gift one to Pythor, though we did use some of the coin we got to buy a great ox and sacrificed it to Kyrah in the hopes that it could cheer her up. It seems a new war may be on the horizon to finish Zakroth, though I do wonder if I should head to the Necropolis instead. The oracle told us that those who don't act on their fate may lose it, and I do not want to lose my fate if it will help achieve the goal I seek. I refuse to. - Horus
