Errands in Town

Max said: With a letter of credit from the Waterwend City Council  in hand, Xankoris flies on wings of flame to Treefall, arriving again in the afternoon on Harvester 24th. Heian Kelpwhisper, the high priest of Deep Sashelas, begins to help him at once with the preliminary stages of researching his torrential rain  spell: laying out diagrams of the magical forces that will be necessary, and working up the complex equations involved in the metamagic. Research at one or more of the town's libraries will also be needed though, as will prayer and sacrifice to the air kami... and, most likely, more trips into the Void with Siwan to search for lost fragments of the ancient spell he means to recreate. Before venturing the Void, Xankoris muses, "Last time I got Sui from researching Isora, would I get Huǒ from researching Osano-Wo this time?" He also wonders, "And if I get another tattoo, would it clear my mind or thicken the doubt? Maybe the best thing that can happen is just Nothing. " Xankoris then goes into Void, embraces the Lying Darkness ahead.
Ering picks up the scroll and thanks the runnerboy giving him a gold coin and a pat on the shoulder. Max said: The Church of Labelas Enoreth  is a grand structure of baroque marble and wood, dedicated to the elven god of philosophy, wisdom, time, and knowledge. On their way, Leoavor tells Ering that the library there holds hundreds of books and scrolls, and the high priest Enialis is widely considered the wisest man in town.  The acolyte who welcomes you inside brings you to a middle-aged high elf woman whom he introduces as Xanaphia Diamonddew, the Church 's Head Librarian. Leoavor seems to know her, and they greet each other as old acquaintances. "I haven't seen you in quite some time, Leoavor," she says with a playful smile. "And you've brought a friend. Welcome, sir." Ering bows to the Head Librarian. "If your collection of books is even half as impressive as the library itself then I'm afraid you will have to drag me out by force." He says with a smile. "We came to research three major topics. The first is about past disasters, cataclysms and calamities, whether natural or magical in nature, the second is about elementals, specifically recorded cases where they bound themselves to humans. And lastly about Rokugani Taint. Could you help us find what we need?"

" Xankoris then goes into Void, embraces the Lying Darkness ahead. You find your work in the Void with Siwan going more quickly this time around... perhaps it has something to do with Siwan's cleverness being enhanced by the Taint in you, or it may be that deeper connection you've felt to the Void since your sense of self has been growing less stable. Whatever the cause, the two of you nimbly move about in that place that is nowhere, finding fragments of the lost and forgotten magic. Yet still, from time to time, you catch a glimpse of something glimmering just past your periphery, or feel as if some presence is watching you... yet when you seek for the cause, it is gone. You even begin to occasionally feel this way during your waking and sleeping hours in the Material Plane, and start to wonder if the Taint is driving you mad... As the days turn into weeks, you bring back one precious bit of information after another, piecing them together with the guidance of the air kami and the technical wisdom of Heian. Your letter of credit from the Waterwend  city council is as good as gold, and provides you with all the special sacrifices and incenses you need, as well as paying your passage into the numerous libraries of Treefall .  At the Temple of Corellon Larethian , you read  Songs of the Sea and Sky (in Elven) and Wisdom of the Lord of All Magics . At the Church of Labelas Enoreth  (where you run into Leoavor and Ering conducting their own research), you search the pages of  Fasting and Spiritual Growth ,  Made and Unmade , and Sea-Cults of Coroastar . At the Temple of Sehanine Moonbow , you pore over  A Text of Thaumaturgy ,  Advanced Magical Arts ,  The Seasons of Oerik: Autumn ,  Innovative Theurgy for Magi , and  The Kaiu Wall and the Abyss (in Hànyǔ). Numerous other books are recommended by the librarians as well, but in languages you lack the fluency to understand. While saying the last part, Xankoris' body trembling. "I guess I better, drink some warm tea and take a rest more, see you later," and he walks away.

Dawi  said: Sense Motive: 3 Knowledge (history): 36 (+7 bonus included) Knowledge (the planes): 29 (+7 bonus included) Knowledge (the planes): 23 (+7 bonus included) On the first day of your research, you read a good deal about the campaigns of Archos the Bloodwing and the history of the Red Kings, though of course much of this was already known to you personally as both are the subject of countless tales and songs in Terolus... in brief, the Bloodwing was a terrible red dragon who led his hordes, styled as the Archos Empire , to invade and ravage much of southeastern Oerik in the first centuries of the Common Era. His conquests eventually brought him to Terolus, where he captured the ancient capital city, Destreth or Destroth (accounts vary), in the center of the country. This invasion was the site of a famous duel between Archos and the Red King, a warlord who had grown to prominence in recent years, famed for his charisma, willpower, magical black blade (Stormbringer, an evil artifact of tremendous power) and wondrous red cloak (the Curtain of Dawn, which rendered him fireproof). The Red King was said to have fought Archos to a standstill, according to the bard Nerolian who watched them clash at the city gates from a nearby tower. But for reasons lost to history, the Red King abandoned the field, and the city fell.     45 years into the reign of the Archos Empire , who had taken up residence there, Destreth was destroyed by the Cataclysm, and the destructive energies of the supernatural disaster swept across all Terolus. Perhaps the most devastating event in the history of Oerth, the Cataclysm is still not well-understood... accounts passed down by survivors speak of a blight blackening the land, killing plants and beasts, and twisting those that survived into horrible abominations. Great storms of elemental energy swirled ceaselessly across the region as well, spewing out violent elementals and leveling anything caught in their path. Only three cities survived: Karn , the greatest trade hub of the era, to the south of Destreth, was protected by the constant magical efforts of a great tabaxi archmage named Angelis Greymane. Reluin was founded in the frozen northeast, sealed within a dome of unmelting blue ice where the Cataclysm's reach was lessened, by the White Queen Lauren and the elves and half-elves who followed her from the Great Forest (now the Great Marsh ), who rules it to this day. And in the northeast, the Lich-King Tellaj raised his dark tower to build a realm of undeath, fueled by the evil energies of the Cataclysm rather than hiding from them.     About 50 years later, 500-ish years ago today, Terolus was cleansed by a miraculous event known as the Renewal, equally shrouded in mystery. The blight withdrew, the storms quieted, and the land slowly grew fertile again. Many stories have been proposed to explain it, but none as accepted as fact by a majority of scholars... however, most agree that a party of adventurers called the Reclaimers by history had some connection to it, based on vague tales of them from the people of Reluin . Some of these claim they came from Karn when it was destroyed by Tellaj, and many say that they defeated Tellaj as well. While most scholars also agree Destreth was likely ground zero of the Cataclysm, no clues remain to be found there... after the Renewal, those who returned to look for them found only a steaming, molten ruin of lava and jagged rock, known today as The Wastes . In the centuries since, there have been many more claiming the title of the Red King, bearing his sword and cloak as proof--all of them fierce, ambitious, and destructive.     You also read a bit about a war in the eastern coastal deserts of Suel , culminating in the Battle of Red Dunes in 620 CY. It was concluded the night that the legendary archmage Elrina Thrice-born summoned a fiendish red dragon to bathe the armies of her foe, the paladin Armis the Sandshroud, in hellfire. And finally, you learn more about the Emperium of Salazar , an ancient Empire that once took and held much of Southeastern Oerik, but is now reduced to a tiny nation of swamps and ruins. There were many causes of the Emperium 's decline, including stretching resources too far, infighting among the royal family and the several child rulers that resulted, but the most famous influence was the Titanwar, when several hundred titans waged their own war across the Emperium 's lands, devastating many of its major cities with the fallout of their massive clashes. The first ratmen, now a prominent race in Salazar , were born of ordinary rats that fed on the titans' corpses, and transformed by the abundance of magic. Some of them still worship the dead titans, but most others turned to the god Raxivort, who accepts all rat-kin. On the second day, your research is less fruitful... while the library has a good deal of information about the summoning, nature, and behavior of elementals, there is precious little about their permanent binding to creatures of the Material Plane, especially not in the way Xankoris and Siwan seem to share a body. But quite helpfully, Xanaphia calls in a favor to borrow a book for you from the library at the Temple of Sehanine Moonbow , titled Rise of the Deathwalkers . It's a relatively recent tome, detailing the formation and growth of the heroic Deathwalkers adventurers guild in Strongtown , widely considered a lesser power of the Catacombs, and in particular it mentions how their first noteworthy archievement was to root out the secret evil wizards guild there. The guildmistress, a woman named Orianna, was kidnapping townsfolk and using them for humanoid experiments, developing a way to permanently fuse together elementals with people. She died in a desperate, last-ditch effort to fuse herself with a fire elemental, and about a year later, one of the Deathwalkers apparently used her research to fuse himself  with an earth elemental, though he was later slain in battle with the dragon turtle Larshak. There are rumors that another Deathwalker, a druid named Xanaphia, was captured by the lesser power Wintermute and has since been in his service, occasionally displaying abilities that suggest she may have also been fused with a mist elemental; the Deathwalkers declined comment on it when interviewed for the book, though. Knowledge (nobility & royalty) applies. But on the third day, you're able to piece together a solid understanding of the Taint from these varied sources, though none of them cover it in specific detail by themselves. It seems to be a kind of supernatural disease or curse relatively unique to Rokugan and people of Rokugani descent (such as the large immigrant settlement in the northeastern region of the Kingdom of Provincia , where Xankoris, Silk, and the Zhongshans are from), caused and exacerbated by exposure to elemental evil. In Rokugan , this is mostly an issue near the Shadowlands , a large region infested by a rift to the evil outer planes and quarantined within the Kaiu Wall by the tireless efforts of the Emerald Empire , especially their Crab Clan. However, there are anecdotal tales of Rokugani becoming Attainted by wandering demons or even evil spells beyond the reach of the Shadowlands . The Taint afflicts the body and  mind, slowly decaying both the more one is affected. If one is Attainted enough, they are said to turn completely evil; and if it grows even worse, they can die of it and will then rise as an undead creature. The Taint can be held partly at bay with natural jade, which seems to interact somehow with the spiritual nature of Rokugani people to act as a sort of buffer, absorbing new Taint and rotting in their stead in a way that sort of brings to mind the  false life  spell. Magic such as remove disease ,  remove curse , and heal  can reduce the amount of Taint in a person, but not cure it completely... the books vaguely reference some secret method to cleanse it, but aren't clear on what that is. This somewhat accounts for the great importance Rokugani seem to place on spiritual and physical purity. It also gives more context to Xankoris's comments about his jade necklace... its intact state means that he hasn't been exposed to any more Taint since he got it.
During the end of the first day Ering slumps in his seat, massaging his temples with both hands. "I expected to find warning signs of a cataclysm that could have helped us, but I guess most magical disasters just… Can't be predicted. Nothing that could shield us from it either, I doubt our combined efforts could even produce a tenth of what those mages did during the Cataclysm." He stares at the books and the stacks of paper in front of him. "I have a weird feeling… Like I'm forgetting something important. Something hiding right under our nose, taunting me… But all I can think about is the battle ahead." During the evenings, using his newfound experience with teleporting, Ering will try to find any mistakes or improvements the long range teleporting spell that sent him and his soldiers straight in the battle of Bowhery. Third day: "At least this is somewhat good news, and it gives a lead to follow in the future." Knowledge (nobility & royalty): 24 Ritt K. said: "That's ridiculous, Ering." Xankoris puts his necklace back. There's something else." Ering catches up to Xankoris. "During our last war council we realized how little we know about Rizdar and his forces. We also thought that Meilin Zhongshan, being herself sworn to a vassal of Astarte, might know something we don't about him. Would you be willing to ask her for help? I will admit my ignorance in the matter, so if there is anything stopping you from doing it I'll gladly go and talk to her."

"I had already returned her the favor and you asked me to be in debt again?" Xankoris sighs. "You can go beg for her help, but don't bring up my name by any means. I rather die trying than winning and owe Scorpion life." He walks faster.

An arcane researcher specializing in modifying humans, he is evil and utterly ruthless, and has replaced much of his own body with clockwork arcane machinery. They say he has all sorts of weapons and tools hidden inside it, which can extend from the exposed mechanisms to be used. Cold, polite, and diabolical, he engineers situations with great care, and never appears unless he's already in control, instead usually sending his powerful minions to do his dirty work. Before he kidnapped Xanaphia, his only other noteworthy follower was a savage human woman named Neon, who has become quite infamous herself for her brutal fighting style and mysterious abilities... supposedly, she can heal any injury as fast as a troll does, and any object she touches becomes a powerful magic weapon in her hands. On Harvester 28th, as he's taking a day off his research to relax, Xankoris suddenly needs to roll a Will save.  On Brewfest 4th, Xankoris's +1 bonus to Wis-based checks wears off. In early Patchwall, Verrer sends word to the Harlequin's Goble t via runnerboy that she's been able to use her contacts to acquire the following spell scrolls for Ering: low-light vision [26gp, 2sp, 5cp after taxes], nerveskitter [26gp, 2sp, 5cp after taxes], true strike [26gp, 2sp, 5cp after taxes], earthbind [157gp, 5sp after taxes], knock [157gp, 5sp after taxes], shadow phase [393gp, 7sp, 5cp after taxes], fire shield [735gp], and dragon breath [1181gp, 2sp, 5cp]. If he's periodically teleporting  back to check, the extremely buxom and friendly middle-aged tallfellow halfling matron Harrowin will pass the word to him.

He gives the head Librarian a gold ingot worth 50 gp to pay for the library fees and as a token of appreciation for her help, promising that he will visit again in a less troubled time.   On the fourth day (should be the 27 of Harvester) he Teleports to Base Camp, focusing on the location he saw when scrying upon Vigil. He immediately shows his army tattoo (and his orders if they are asked), and requests an audience with the commanding officer.   First teleport check is 84, which would be off target if Base Camp is ruled as viewed once. In that case the second try is a 56, so on target.

He's been visiting the libraries, looking for information about ancient histories and metamagic. He seems to have no issue magically translating as much as he needs to, and this project of yours might be of interest to him, so perhaps you could compare notes. I'll mention it to him the next time I see him." Several days later, Xanaphia introduces Xankoris to a strangely-dressed foreigner named Otu'ap-Xlta. His skin is even darker than Hamanap, Moonshadow, or Viktor Priest, marking him as a pureblooded native of Suel , and he emanates an air of great power and wisdom. "Nice to meet you Mr.Otu'ap-Xlta, I'm Asahina Xankoris." He introduced himself and take a bow. "I believe Ms. Xanaphia already briefed you about my work. Time is of the essence, let's start the work." Otu'ap-Xlta uses his magic to help translate a variety of books for you in the weeks that follow, often discussing the deeper meanings behind what you learn together... he seems little-educated in the formal workings of magic, yet has a deep and often unusual insight into the mechanisms of reality. Though the specialized teleportation   circle in Skyshroud  is very advanced magic, your experience teleporting  so often lately does help you understand the metamagic of the spell better. You're able to make some notes which may be of use to the military archmages when you return, and also improve your own accuracy with the spell. Your accuracy checks for teleport  now benefit from a -1 bonus (so for example, if you roll a 98 to aim for a place you've studied carefully, it's treated as a 97 instead; so instead of appearing in a similar area, you would merely be off-target). "You are very generous, sir Walfire. I'll see that the rest is tithed at the altar of the One-Eyed God." The fourth day there is Sunday, Brewfest 2nd, when you teleport  to Base Camp. Perhaps because your thoughts are distracted by concerns about Xankoris and the strange omens of late, your accuracy is less than ideal... you zag a few times in the instant you pass through the Astral Plane , but thanks to your connection with Vigil and your repeated scrying  on the destination, you manage to find it on the first try. A group of passing soldiers jump, startled as you appear from thin air beside a statue in a small square. You can tell at a glance that you're inside the Garrison , and upon seeing your tattoo the soldiers salute and offer to guide you to their commander. They don't ask to see your orders, probably owing to your noble manner and cloth, and the impressive display of magic. In one of the nicer buildings of the Garrison , you're brought to its commanding officer, a human knight named Lieutenenant Colonel Norman Treeford. When you come in, he's discussing battle plans over a map of the Catacombs with an older officer bearing the insignia of a Major on the loose-fitting uniform of a fellow member of MARSUB (the  Magical and Arcane Support Branch of the Terolus Human Military ). The Major also wears a grotesque amulet on a leather cord about his neck that looks to be made of a  human's  mummified left hand. Spellcraft applies.

"But do you think his blessing will last until the battle?"  You recall that suggested offerings to the androgynous elven Lord of the Continuum are long periods of silent meditation, books, very old coins, stones worn smooth by water, and gray hairs from one's own head (and He especially prefers offerings at sunset). For a typical offering, She blesses worshippers with a +2 sacred bonus to one Knowledge check of their choice made within the next week; for stealing an offering, He curses the thief by fining them a year from their maximum lifespan. "It varies widely, of course, but if you want the blessing to last a whole month, an offering worth 40 to 100 gold pieces would be appropriate." "How is the situation here in Base Camp? I heard you had a Golgari and a supplies problem. How goes the war with Suel?" You've read about Hands of Glory before--a kind of wondrous magical item made from the left hand of a hanged man--so this may well be the very same one that the Wayfinders recovered from the Stonefare , before it was stolen by their former member-turned-traitor Zeke.  Lieutenant Colonel Treeford and the Major both salute you back, and the Lieutenant Colonel accepts the scroll, skimming over it before returning it. The Major glances at him questioningly, but Treeford says "You can stay, Medi," then introduces him to you: "This is Major Medi Azim, head arcanist of my garrison . What brings you to Base Camp , Lieutenant Colonel?" The soldiers listen grimly to the news, and exchange a meaningful look when you finish. "Yes, THUMH told me they were sending someone from MARSUB in the last REALM-B," Treeford says, referencing several of the many acronyms used by your organization: THUMH is the Terolus Human Military Headquarters in Skyshroud where you were trained, and the REALM-B is the Regular Arcane Long-range Military Briefing, a practice where THUMH keeps in periodic contact with important garrisons around Terolus using sending  spells.  "It sounds like we owe you a debt of thanks for what you did in Bowhery and in Zorall's caves, Lieutenant Colonel." Treeford sighs, though, and you can feel the weight of his burdens in the sound. "Even so, the situation is desperate here. Trade has been down to a trickle between the Storm last year and the Stonefare 's embargo, and the Suloise raids on our outlying farms in recent months have made things worse. The golgari have been filtered eastward in scattered groups to attack us as well, of late... they're not very smart, but they're tough and strong, and they grow back half the time you kill them, seeding the corpses of any who fall. We've been taking in refugees from nearby thorps and villages that have been sacked, many enlisting with the garrison  for food and shelter, but they're just half-starved farmers, more a drain than an asset... supplies are low, the streets are full of beggars, and crime is on the rise. Things are reaching a boiling point here. We finally managed to formalize an alliance with the Red King, but he hasn't sent us any reinforcements yet, only responding to my letters with vague excuses about attacks on his own lands. I need more men, so we can hunt down these Suloise bandits and keep the golgari away from our farms; and I need them soon, before the people of my town starve or eat each other. Summer is coming to an end, and if we can't take in one more harvest, winter will be the end of us." Dawi said: During character creation I exchanged 2000 gp and wrote on my sheet "2000 gp worth of rubies" to carry them more easily, if we sell gems at half price does that mean I just lost 1000 gold pieces? Yes and no. If you just sold the rubies to a pawn shop, you'd effectively be down 1000gp. But some specialized shops value them at a higher rate, and often other adventurers or merchants met on the road will accept gems as a currency at full value, since they don't want to be burdened down with pounds and pounds of coinage either. Gems are also useful for things like bribes or gifts, where they effectively 'buy' their full value worth of goodwill. And with precious metals, they can be used as materials for Craft (jewelrymaking) to effectively increase their overall value as a piece of art. In short, gems are lighter and easier to carry than coins, but the trade-off for that is that their value is less easily accessible. They still have  that value, though.

You can see the hope in their expressions when you speak of a possible end to the trade embargo, but even as you ask for help, you can tell what the answer is going to be. "It's all we can do to keep the peace and hold the town walls against the golgari that wander our way," Lieutenant Colonel Treeford says grimly. "We can't spare you any help, sir. I'll send word to Fort Reyna , they might be able to lend some aid... but to be honest, we're not exactly a high priority to Skyshroud , out here. Most of our bases are understaffed and underequipped. This is the wild frontier." Major Azim speaks up, adding "The fact that they sent you and your men at all is probably a sign that someone's been paying attention to our reports, and realizes this situation is much more dangeous than anything we've seen in decades. The Great Powers keep each other busy for the most part, locked in their three-way stalemate, but if Shurreon's gambit manages to give the Coiled Lady a big enough advantage, it could finally upset the balance. Of the 3, she's the very worst one we could have rising to rule the Catacombs..." Treeford nods along, this analysis clearly not news to him. "If anyone can get us more help from Skyshroud , it would probably be you, Lieutenant Colonel.  Send  word to them, tell them what you've seen here. Tell them the danger our kingdom faces, before it's too late."
Ering nods with a serious expression in his face, understanding the gravity of the situation. "Lieutenant Colonel, Major." He nods to both of them. "Thank you for your time. Hopefully I will be able to bring good news to our next meeting. Ever Vigilant!" Ering salutes and leaves the room, Teleporting back to the Waypoint (82 rolled).

I will come, and help your servants if I can," he says in his strange accent. Then after a moment, he asks cautiously "There are not too many priests there, yes?"
'Religion stuff?' Xankoris wonders. It's understandable though, there have been several misfortunate cases of gaijin's priests in Rokugan before. But don't worry, if you feel insecure, just stay in my room." Since he asked for help, providing him some room is the least Xankoris can do.

As the spell is cast, dark clouds gather in the sky. If the spell is successfully cast, after two rounds the clouds begin to drop a relentless downpour of rain and the winds begin to howl. The storm created by this spell is much more intense than a natural storm, and can be quite dangerous as well.     The clouds blot out the sky, reducing natural light conditions to shadowy illumination during the day and total darkness at night. The omnipresent rain further reduces visibility ranges by half, conferring a -6 circumstance penalty to Spot and Search checks. Severe winds (31-50 mph) blow and whirl in random directions through the storm's area, conferring a -6 circumstance penalty to Listen checks. Ranged weapon attacks (except for Huge or larger ranged weapons, such as siege weapons) also take a -6 circumstance penalty to hit and their range increments are halved. If the land does not have sufficient drainage, minor flooding is possible.     The wind and rain automatically extinguish any unprotected flames, and cause protected flames (such as those of lanterns) to dance wildly and have a 50% chance of being extinguished each round. Large fires, such a forest fire or burning building, may take up to a minute to be fully extinguished. Even magical and alchemical fire is weakened by the torrent, taking a -4 penalty to save DCs and a dealing 20% less damage. Each round on their turn, Medium or smaller creatures (Large or smaller, if flying) must roll a Fort save against the spell's DC or have their speed reduced to half that turn by the wind. These conditions also make it very difficult to focus on spellcasting: any character attempting to cast a spell, activate a spell-like ability, or maintain concentration on such, must succeed on a Concentration check equal to this spell's DC or lose that spell.     Thunder rumbles through the clouds as well, and every 6 rounds after the rain begins to pour, a bolt of lightning strikes a random square (at the DM's discretion) in the spell's area, dealing electricity damage equal to 1d10 d8's (Reflex half, using the spell's DC). Squares containing lots of metal are more likely to be struck. Other forms of magical lightning (such as a lightning bolt or call lightning spell, or the breath weapon of a blue dragon) are more powerful in the spell's area, benefitting from a +4 bonus to save DCs and dealing 20% more damage.     A character who successfully casts this spell has a 1% chance of attracting the attention of Osano Wo or Isora (DM's discretion), who demands service of them in the form of a quest that must be completed within a year.     This spell may only be cast outdoors, though taking shelter can mitigate its effects.
"I guess because we're in a bigger land, the storm is weaker than the original. The thunder is interesting tho..." Xankoris discusses with Otu'ap-Xlta about the spell. "Can you cast sending to Ering? I want to tell him about the spell, something like: 'The spell is finished, it makes casting a spell harder, weaken all fire, call thunder. Make them prepare a fire and wear metal a lot' ."     He pulls his hair back, reminding himself what left to be done. "Oh right, I'll bleach my hair today, and tomorrow we'll go to Waterwend first, returning the letter. Then to the Waypoint."

Ritt K. said: "I can do more than describe." Xankoris then casts silent image and creates miniature Ering. "Here you go." Otu studies the image for a few minutes, then meditates deeply for 10 more, murmuring a mantra in his native tongue, before he speaks the words that are sent  to Ering: "Xankoris' storm magic is ready, will make spellcasting harder, weaken fire, bring lightning. Metal armor dangerous, torches useless. We come tomorrow by way of Waterwend." Does Ering reply?
Ering stops in his tracks for a few, short moments and then replies mentally. "Good to know. Buy as many sunrods as you can, we'll need the light." He then informs the other Wayfinders about the message.
During the week of cleanup and repairs, the Wayfinders have time to visit the nearby settlements and spread word of your victory in the  Stone River  War.  Waterwend 's leaders are joyous, the Companions of  Bowhery  greatly relieved, and  Base Camp 's people thank the gods for this miracle. With the embargo of the  Stonefare  broken, the golgari gone, and King Limar installed in Dreyan's place, trade begins to filter down to  Base Camp  again, and the Red King's new garrison there, led by Selisa, soon hunt down Suloise bandits in the surrounding area, making it safe for refugees to resettle their farmsteads. In all 3 towns, the people hail the Wayfinders and the Red King as heroes, and you no longer need to pay upkeep costs in  Base Camp  now either.  In  Waterwend , Xankoris is able to spread the story of Suijin [水金, "golden water"], former Fortune of the sea who was obliterated by the Lying Darkness before Isora's current husband Suitengu rose to take His place. With Suijin's name recovered from the Void, His memory can be once again a part of the history of the Rokugani people, and his followers at the  Shrine of Isora and the Thousand Fortunes  vow to tell as many people as they can, so it will never again be forgotten. He can also teach his defender from beyond spell to Verrer or Arral as promised, so they can produce and sell scrolls.   Limar is gifted a scroll of consecrate for his shrine of Aasterinian, and visits the glazier he hired in Wealsun, who has finished both custom hourglasses he commissioned. The first is carved of twisted oak, with a glass tinted black on the top and white on the bottom, filled with tiny grains of many different minerals in every color of the rainbow. The second, as he requested, is shaped of  living  cedarwood shot through with veins of gold and filled with grains shaped like tiny eggs. "I was able to hire a druid to help shape the wood, and a jeweler to help me work in the gold. It was quite a challenge, but the least I could do for one of our saviors. Take it, with my compliments," the man insists, giving him both beautiful pieces of art. Kraggan brings the hide of Zorall and the scaliest parts of several of his larger children to  Frimin and Asgeifr's Armaments , and has them forged into a suit of masterwork breastplate and matching light shield for herself, a fierce and beautiful outfit befitting the guildmistress of a new lesser power. Ering and Leoavor are able to gather more information about the plague in the slums, and learn that it does indeed seem to be demon fever. Many locals beg for their help to end the plague, and stop the recent crime wave, both of which are being blamed on refugees from Litheria's former territory. Leoavor is very anxious about the plague and takes extra care to avoid anyone who looks sick, as he's always been terrified at the thought of his fleshing decaying. Ering is able to visit Base Camp and meet with Lieutenant Colonel Norman Treeford to debrief about the Storming and the end of the Stone River War. Treeford shares news about the Red King's garrison and their peace with the Stonefare. Dreyan soon sends Orback here to serve as ambassador to Base Camp on King Limar's behalf.

Done with his task of spreading Suijin's tale for today; he sits, relaxes, and senses void. "I don't know when they'll show up so I have to be quick. Limar Admiring the work will put in a order for some smaller simple wood carved hourglasses with chronepsis's symbol = to the number of half siblings he is expecting to see in the spring. -if his hourglass can be opened he'll use his gemcuting tools to grind down "greenstone marked red SFL-2." and add in it's dust. (Spot check: 31) Slipping into the Void is as smooth and easy as stepping into a warm bath now that your mind is cleared. As you enter your meditative state, you feel as if your mind is projected through Siwan's form, in that place that is nowhere, like an inversion of your states in the Material Plane. Your third eye opens before a forbidding castle of dark stone, squat but broad. The curtain wall stretches into the distance to left and right, but you can see heavy timber gates and a drawbridge raised behind a wide moat. Turning your fixed perspective around, you can see a dense forest beyond it... this doesn't look like Zorall's forest, though, or the stands of trees in the plains south of  Waterwend . Wisdom, Knowledge (architechture & engineering), Knowledge (nature), and Knowledge (nobility & royalty) apply. "I dont have to water or take care of this living wood stuff? do I?" The glazier is pleased to take the order, and charges only 27 gold pieces for each of the 2 new hourglasses you order. You're able to pick them up a week later. It's designed not to open once complete, but the glazier can help safely open it for you to add in the tiny stones. "Cedar shouldn't rot, as long as you store it in a cool, dry place it'll gradually die and dry out, but retain its shape. Of course, if you want it to stay alive, it'll need water and sunlight." He indicates the few twigs with green leaves rising artfully from the top, and the fine roots dangling from the bottom. "For that, just keeping it in a tray of fresh water by a window should be enough."

Ritt K. said: Xankoris tries to guess where this place is. (Wisdom check: 3, Knowledge (Engineering) check: 5, Knowledge (Nature) check: 23, Knowledge (Nobility) check: 7) The only clue you can get is from the quality of the trees in the forest you can see... they seem more the type to grow further north of here, though not terribly far. Perhaps somewhere in the northern Catacombs? Kraggan also visits each place that sent people to held during the Storming, such as the Church of Yondalla , the Church of Corellon Larethian , and so on, in Waterwend . She personally thanks those who fought beside her guild, tithing generously to each house of worship, and prays with the friends of those who died in the line of duty.
When Xankoris leads Ering, Kraggan, and Axil to the potshop in the red-light district  where Silaquin is having stew and stale bread for lunch, she's pleased to see them. After finishing quickly, she shows them to a quiet alleyway where they can talk without as many ears about. "Congratulations on defeating Zorall," she says first, "everyone's been talking about it, especially with the songs Ozzy's been singing in The Goblet ." Glancing around one last time to check for eavesdroppers, she lowers her voice and continues: "So I've had my ear to the ground for a while, and found out as much as I can about the slave trade. Almost all the slaves bought and sold in Waterwend  pass through Gor's Flesh Market , an auction house run by a sharp-eyed old elf from Treefall  called Gor the Wise. He's got a rep for being strict, but not cruel. He buys and sells slaves himself, and is supposed to be really rich from it, but he also lets private sellers use his premesis for a cut of their sales--most of the sales are the latter sort, captives brought in and sold by slavers in service to the evil powers or the merchant lords. There are all sorts of buyers, though: merchants, nobles from Kentwing, ship captains, adventurers, and emissaries of various powers. Meilin Zhongshan is a regular, buying slaves to work in the various businesses around here. A lot of the whores at the Kitten's Purr  are slaves, and some of the waitresses at The Lucky Seven  too... the Church of Nerull  has slave-guards, and I've even heard that Meilin sometimes gifts them slaves to sacrifice on Godsdays. The sense I get is that slavery is fairly unpopular with the local population, since halflings tend to be pretty gentle and conservative, but people say that Meilin and Gor have too many important members of the Merchants Guild in their pocket for it get outlawed, and Gor is part of the guild as well, so he has their protection. The council ostensibly makes the laws... but the guild controls the council, and Meilin controls the guild. It all comes back to money: there's too much profit and power at stake. I was able to get a few of the names of guild members involved in the issue, but not all of them... Charmaigne Highhill, Eldon Hilltopple, and Seraphina Goldbarrel are strong proponents of the slave trade, and likely all well-paid for it. But Cian Polebrand, Lavinia Tosscobble, and Meria Leafgallow can probably be bought or swayed to change sides." She goes on, "Most of the slavers who bring in people to sell now serve Hesilith, Prossha, and Selene. Zorall's, Grizzled One's, and Gurak's raiders used to bring in slaves too, before the Stone River War.  There are also some groups from nearby savage tribes: the Narook hobgoblins, the Scarrak and Ractal gnolls, the Lintag and Glick and Grack orcs, and the Roosh troglodytes. By Waterwend  law, slaves are property and can be resold like livestock, but still have some protections... they can't be mistreated too harshly or murdered, for example. Law and custom treats them more like children than animals. And they're not chattel here, they can marry who they choose and their children are born free. Any possessions of a slave before they were enslaved remain theirs, but anything they come to own afterwards belongs to their owner; so sometimes skilled artisans or professionals who fall into poverty will sell themselves into slavery, so they can keep the payment to pass onto their children when they die. Unfortunately, Waterwend 's laws don't protect slaves once they're taken elsewhere, which is common... Kentwing has much stricter and harsher laws for slaves, for example, and out in the Catacombs their rights are up to whatever power holds sway where they end up."     Silaquin also shares some recent news: A group of evil adventurers calling themselves the Brakbreakers have been slaughtering and sacking tiny thorps in the northwestern Catacombs. When Terolus Army soldiers were sent out to deal with them, they withdrew into the protection of the deep Catacombs, the territory of their master Jorvasskar. The Church of Arvoreen  appointed a new champion to replace Roscoe, who was slain during the Storming of the Waypoint . The new one isn't as impressive, people say, but he's a paladin named Osborne Thornstaff.  The high priest Quarion's death has also left the Church of Corellon  under the leadership of his younger sister and former underpriestess, Antinua. A blacksmith in Kentwing has invented a new type of plow, which seems to work better than the traditional design. Word around the red-light district  is that Meilin has been looking for Xankoris, and wants to speak with him urgently.     Unrelatedly, some things I forgot to mention while Limar was in Waterwend  getting his hourglasses:  He learned that he now gets a 5% discount at Frimin and Asgeifr's Armaments thanks to his regular patronage there, and a 5% discount at Ryelly's Wondrous Vault thanks to his banking with Ryelly's cousin and close friend Merla Underbough. At Underbough's Underwriting , Merla gave him the 50 gold piece payout on a life binder bequeathed to him by a widowed merchant whose business he helped to save during the hard winter following the Great Storm of 1420. In gratitude for frequent business and the hopes of a potential supply of more Angel's Tongue from the Stonefare , Stumbleduck also offers King Limar a 9% discount on all future purchases.
Once back in the Otterman, Ering heads to the last floor with Limar's letter of recommendation in hand. He raises his hand, ready to knock, but changes his mind at the last minute, thinking that setting up an appointment could be more polite. He walks back down the stairs, trying to find the concierge, handing the letter and asking it to be delivered to Koran.

He raises his hand, ready to knock, but changes his mind at the last minute, thinking that setting up an appointment could be more polite. He walks back down the stairs, trying to find the concierge, handing the letter and asking it to be delivered to Koran.  The Otterman , like most establishments catering to the upper crust, keeps a desk manned in the lobby at all times--after all, nobles should never be obliged to wait . The concierge on duty accepts the letter politely, and assures you he will have it delivered to "Lord Bateman." Knowledge (nobility & royalty) applies. He rings for a bellhop in a crisp uniform, who carries the letter upstairs.  About 10 minutes later, the young man returns with another letter for you, bearing a familiar sigil you've seen around town: the device of the Waterwend Merchants Guild. Sense Motive and Knowledge (nobility & royalty) apply. It reads: My Dear Lieutenant Colonel Walfire,     I shall speak with my acquaintance about the possibility of her meeting with you to discuss the faith she and I share. Please be assured, I shall do all in my power to entreat her in this manner, for any friend of my business partner, his grace Limar, King of the Stonefare, is surely to be a friend of mine. If you would be so gracious as to await us in The Otterman 's lobby tomorrow afternoon, Godsday, Ready'reat 11th, in the Common Year 1421, I shall meet you there and endeavour to bring my acquaintance as well.                                                                                                                                     Your obedient servant,                                                                                                                                         Koran Bateman
Knowledge (nobility & royalty): 16 Sense Motive: 19 Knowledge (nobility & royalty): 30 According to Ering, what would be the best way to present himself to the meeting? Apart from bringing adequate clothes, would a gift be seen as appropriate?
Dawi said: Knowledge (nobility & royalty): 16 Sense Motive: 19 Knowledge (nobility & royalty): 30 According to Ering, what would be the best way to present himself to the meeting? Apart from bringing adequate clothes, would a gift be seen as appropriate?  You find it a little odd when the concierge used the style 'Lord' for a mere merchant... but then, Waterwend has traditionally not had proper nobility, and you've heard of men such as Koran referred to as 'merchant lords' before. Normally the style 'Master' would be used in the absence of a formal noble title for a man of wealth but not blood (and indeed, this might rankle at a blooded nobleman like yourself, especially one raised in the strict traditions of Wee Jas), but while waiting on one of the lobby's plush velvet couches, you suddenly realize why the concierge would tactfully avoid referring to the Otterman 's best customer as 'Master Bateman'. When you recieve the reply, you also notice Bateman's choice of the Merchant Guild seal... odd, since you wrote to him about a personal matter, not a professional one. Why wouldn't he use his own personal seal? A man of such vast wealth surely has one... and you recall someone telling you that only the highest-ranking members of the Merchants Guild are allowed to possess and use the Guild's seal. Perhaps it's a display of power? His letter is unfailingly polite and genteel, the style of writing you'd expect from another nobleman, so maybe he's trying to prove himself your equal in both manner and political power. By agreeing to meet you regardless of whether Limar's mentor agrees to come, it's clear that he wants to make your acquaintanceship... you've heard rumors that he has connections to one of the Great Powers, so maybe he's planning on courting an alliance against the Coiled Lady with the Wayfinders too? You don't fail to notice how he described Limar in his capacity as King of the Stonefare , placing himself in regal circles by friendship and partnership with the dragon as well. With so much subtlety condensed into one short note, it's clear that this is not a man to take lightly. Dressing finely and bringing a small but expensive gift would definitely be appropriate, and perhaps a tail as well... one or two personal honor guards or courtiers, just to demonstrate your own power as well. Even very strong individuals are expected to have personal guards in Skyshroud, to serve as an extra set of eyes and ears, run messages, get help or buy time for escape in case of an assassination attempt, etc. Silaquin might serve, if you get her a bath and some decent clothing, but you'd probably be better off teleporting  back to the Waypoint  and returning with some proper guards. If Koran's demonstrating his power, doing the same would be wise; both to show respect to him, and to prove you're worthy of his estimation.
After departing Cian Polebrand's house, Xankoris and Ering meet back up with their companions to debrief. "It sounds like it went well..." Axil says, once you've explained. "Sil was right, they can be moved with the right lever. Let's go see the others." Rather than playing it out, which would likely be a bit repetitious, Ering and Xankoris can just each roll a Diplomacy check to see how well you sway Lavinia Tosscobble and Meria Leafgallow with similar strategies. The next day after lunch, Ering is due at The Otterman  to meet with Koran, and hopefully Limar's mysterious mentor as well. What/whom do you bring with you, Ering?
Diplomacy check: 26, 24. Xankoris also tries sense void to check harriers' progress as well. Spot check: 22.

If Hunter refuses or has already departed, Ering will ask Axil.  He also ponder on what could be the right gift to bring: something not too expensive but definitely not too cheap, not a weapon or anything that could be interpreted as a subtle threat, and no jewelry, as he guesses that his gift would pale in comparison to what both Koran and his guest have the means to buy. In the end he settles on a book (or two, depending on the price) for Koran, if possible an heavy one on laws and ethics an a lighter one, maybe a novel or a collection of stories (max 200 gp). How do the two of you want to proceed with the project? Opening your third eye on Daidoji Shizuku, you see her sitting in a tiny, dirty tavern, drinking with some human farmers. She's still dressed as a peasant, and seems to be posing as a migrant worker, sharing complaints with the strangers while subtly coaxing rumors of a nearby castle out of them. While you're in Waterwend , you're approached by a water shugenja devoted to Suitengu (Fortune of the sea, and current husband of Isora). He doesn't seem to be a PBR, but neither is he from Rokugan... by his accent, he probably grew up in Terolus. He asks for your help in building a new shrine to Suitengu in Treefall , as a sister shrine to the one you raised in Waterwend which inspired him. Hunter admits, his voice raspy and croaking now as he peers at you from a hideous, froglike face, and gestures with his thick, red and veiny arms. "But... a man like me, in The Otterman ? I can't see how it would help your case."  Axil, on the other hand, is more amenable. "Sure, I'll come along. I'd like to wear a different disguise, though... now that we're working on the anti-slavery project, I'm especially concerned about House Goldenblade's connection to it being discovered." The only shop in Waterwend  that would have expensive books is Bateman's Reliquary , an antique shop named--as you might have guessed--after its owner. Fortunately, you have enough spell slots now to teleport  to Treefall  first. At Pages  there, the high elven Quarion Startome questions you about your comrade Hiskel and the rumors of her having learned the name of fire. You buy  Theology of the Kordians there, a rare illuminated copy of the book about Kord's legends and teachings, as well as the illustrated  Fairy Dragons and Other Tales of the Seelie Court , the 2 totaling 120 gold pieces.  At The Pawned Prawn , you find a bottle of expensive perfume from the Emperium of Salazar for 250 gold pieces as well. At The Otterman  Godsday afternoon, you find 3 people waiting for you in the lobby. The first is a portly, middle-aged human man wearing extremely expensive clothing, with cunning eyes but an utterly unimposing physique. The second is also a man, but as dangerous-looking as the first isn't--an enormous orc in ornate spiked full plate, he bristles with weapons and has watchful, suspicious eyes. Even in Skyshroud , you have rarely seen any single person so intimidating... The last is a genteel human woman wearing a black traveling cloak over cloth-of-gold vestments and a twelve-faceted black gemstone the size of a chicken's egg fitted to a platinum chain (from your experience with Limar, you recognize this necklace as a holy symbol of Astilabor). She's not remotely as intimidating as the orc, but moreso than the other human. "You must be Ering Walfire," the first says, stepping forward with a smile to offer you a handshake. "I have the honor to be Koran Bateman. This is my spiritual advisor, Nerosian, a priestess of Astilabor; and my loyal bodyguard, Stapes. Please, join us!" Koran and Nerosian sit at the prepared table, where a silver tea set and several plates of delicate pastries are ready. A seat has been prepared for you as well, but only one, so the disguised Axil stands behind you like the ordinary guard he's posing as. Stapes stays close to Koran wherever he goes, and it takes you a moment to realize that's always within reach of both his master and  you.
Xankoris'll let Ering do this part, he has more political knowledge of this place than Xamkoris. With a better understanding of the Void, he now can sense void 3 times/day and can detect magic and detect taint at will while using this ability, so he'll try to check their progress once a day to be on the same page with them. Of course, why not? Spreading faith is also another Shugenja's duty, he'll help him. "Nonetheless, I'm Asahina Xankoris. Please tell me your name and your mentor."

How do the two of you want to proceed with the project? Having swayed 3 councilors how do our vote odds look? Ering suggests informing Euphemia Highhill of the developments, letting her know that she can go ahead with the anti-slavery sermons. He also starts to worry that simply abolishing slavery would cause all the indentured people currently in Waterwend to be suddenly out of work, so he inquires about the possibility of having additional worker protections passed by the council.  Max said: At The Otterman  Godsday afternoon, you find 3 people waiting for you in the lobby. "Master Koran Bateman, Lady Nerosian, it's a pleasure to meet you." He sits down and with an agreed upon motion instructs Axil to deliver the gifts, using the opportunity to also introduce him with his new name. "They are just small tokens to show my appreciation, I don't doubt that both of you have very busy days, so I thank you for meeting me on such short notice." After asking a few short and polite routine questions Ering quickly moves to the real reason for the meeting. "I have a personal and a business matter that I would like to discuss today, and while they are very different from each other I feel we could reach a compromise for both of them." Ering looks at Nerosian and smiles. "I talked at length with King Limar about an artifact that was in his possession for just a brief amount of time, a very powerful tome created by an even more powerful wizard. I've heard that someone made an offer he couldn't refuse and he accepted before I could properly… Inspect it. My curiosity doubled when I discovered what he had been offered, so meeting the current holder of the book became a priority as well." "The other reason I'm here is because I have information that might be of great interest to someone as business oriented as you, Master Bateman." Ering addresses the merchant not caring about what his last name may sound with that title, not wanting to call him a lord. "A great change looms over Waterwend, and while you may have heard rumors I would be glad to offer you a clear picture of what the future could hold, so that you may be ready to profit while other are caught unaware."
Ritt K. said: With a better understanding of the Void, he now can sense void 3 times/day and can detect magic and detect taint at will while using this ability, so he'll try to check their progress once a day to be on the same page with them. Of course, why not? Spreading faith is also another Shugenja's duty, he'll help him. "Nonetheless, I'm Asahina Xankoris. Please tell me your name and your mentor." Over the next couple of years, you observe Shizuku and her team mastering local customs and accents to better blend in, gathering intelligence on Rizdar the Storm, then gradually infiltrating his forces. One by one, they swear false fealty to him, taking on the roles of common soldiers in his castle, but always watching, listening, and eventually mapping out the surrounding Catacombs... The young man bows deeply. "I am Iuchi Daidase, of the Unicorn clan. I was trained by Sensei Iuchi Honoka, in the Great Marsh . It is an honor to finally meet you, Champion of Isora Asahina Xankoris. I have heard many tales of your great deeds." Knowledge (geography) and (history) apply.
