Errands in Town

"Here." Xankoris passed 12gp to her and asked: "Is there any way to send mail and letter from here to Provincia."
The soldier hands it over. Craft (weaponsmithing) applies, trained only. "To Provincia? Nine Hells, that's far..." she scratches her head. "You could sell it to a traveler headin' east, I s'pose, and hope to get lucky. A courier goin' so far would charge a hefty sum, I imagine. If'n you went to the west coast, might be you could find a ship to take it thataways..."
Craft (weaponsmithing) check: 14. "West coast? Got it."

Ritt K. said: Craft (weaponsmithing) check: 14. Close-up, you can see that the workmanship is very fine... not quite a masterwork, but the journeyman who made it was better than most. It's very old, too, and made to last. You'd guess that it might have been crafted nearly a century ago, in fact, which makes it very valuable by Rokugani standards, although most northerners like this soldier wouldn't understand that. In another ten years or so, it may fully develop its own kami soul. Josh said: How much of an investment are we talking and how big is the profit? could it be traced back to me? -will anybody die? "Tell you what," the guy says, picking his teeth with a piece of straw. "You put in 100 gold, and I can turn it into 140 by next Sunday." He shrugs to the other questions. "Much is risked in war, they say. You wanna make money, ya gotta take risks. So we got a deal or what?" Josh said: I guess he did, he definitely tried to keep the defenders busy while the undead launched a surprise attack. the white an grey part might be in reference to the fact he used to be a paladin then decided to go evil. " Did he now? A fallen paladin... those are dangerous indeed. Once you've betrayed everything you were, you've nothing left to lose," Kaladesh muses. Selisa pipes up, her voice like silk. "In songs and stories, gray is the color most often associated with fallen paladins. Those who still try to do their duty without seeking atonement are sometimes called 'gray guards', while those who fall even deeper into darkness and make pacts with evil gods become 'blackguards'. It sounds like Silverlime expects this Kendling fellow to pursue conquest rather than pure evil, though. A 'red guard', perhaps?" Kaladesh grins, enjoying her wordplay. "So then, if Kendling is the turncloak who 'makes his own rules', who's the changeling? His master? He's Zorall's warleader, isn't he?" Vanadia Leafblade, the Red King's wild elf priestess, frowns. "Zorall is a red dragon. He's no shapechanger." Josh said: -Kraggan do you know any spells to fix largish areas of woodland? the army messed up my mom territory when moving through. "A plant growth spell could regrow damaged brush and trees in about a 700' radius. It might take several castings to cover a large enough area though, that's a big damn army," Kraggan explains. "In fact, the spell would make the growth pretty thick. It could serve Kalemne as a solid defense in the future." Josh said: no thank you, I'm not much of a weapons kobold, fire an brimstone magic is where the damage is. -and return the book. Frimin shrugs. "Suit yourself. If you change your mind, come by anytime." At the Church of Pelor , Liman accepts the book back that evening while Limar is off scouting the enemy camp. The church is much less busy now, with acolytes sweeping up the mess from the earlier crowds. "Did it help? I know it's a bit of a dry read, but the methods inside are all of a good standard."

Josh said: heres 10 platinum don't make me come find you. He grins and winks conspiratorially. "You got it, boss. Don'tcha worry, I'll be around." Josh said: the Changeling is the grizzled one, this riddle was in answer to the question where the next 3 major battles will be. if you would like to copy the transcript i think kraggan has it. the grizzled one waited while kendling did not, quite fortunate since this town would have fallen with out the aid of the red king or terolous armies. "Ahh, I see. Because he's a werewolf... that makes sense. Silverlime tells good riddles, perhaps we ought to question his head ourselves, eh Vadania?" She smiles back. "Not a bad idea. Perhaps after the siege is resolved." Josh said: she did say it would recover on its own in a season but if you could find the time it would be nice. "Regrowing forests sounds right up my alley," Kraggan says. "Once Waterwend is safe, I'd love to help." Josh said: We won't know till I have to use the knowledge, hope it saves someone. "I hope so as well," Liman says, patting you encouragingly on the shoulder. You can see that the gold-trimmed hems of his robes are stained with blood, doubtless from treating so many wounded soldiers today.

Josh said: Hey Kaladesh I heard metallic dragons could shape shift in to humans. can you show me? Over lunch on Flocktime 11th, Kaladesh shakes his head. "Copper dragons can't do that, only silvers and golds. Besides, why would I want to change this handsome mug?" He grins, posing ridiculously like a mummer knight and drawing more laughter from Selisa and Vadania. Josh  said: -how did you come to serve the red king? your pretty young did he hatch you? "Oh, the King and I go way back" he tells you, pausing for a swig of ale. "We're close to the same age, actually, though of course that doesn't mean much with humans. We dragons are a slowly kindling forgefire, but they flare like explosions--and none brighter than Red. We met years ago when he was just striking out on his own, not long after he found Stormbringer. I had claimed a little stretch of the Hills of Light as my territory, and he challenged me for it. He won the duel, but I was so impressed with his spirit that I offered to trade my service for my lands, and become the first of his companions." Josh  said: -what type of breath weapon do copper dragons have? I've got a few meta breaths if you want to compare. "You've studied metabreathing, eh? That's quite a tricky art to learn... I never tried to fiddle much with mine, but we coppers have two kinds of breath, like most metallic dragons. One is a stream of acid, the other is a cloud of magical gas that slows those who inhale it."

Limar gives Kaladesh an appraising look - 5 appraise "you snout is a little flat, eyes are a bit crooked ....tails kind of short ." bluff  26  "and of course your copper" "Humbug! I would expect such poor taste from a greenie," he says with mock severity. Craning his neck over towards the enormous construct Hamil (who hasn't been eating or drinking anything), Kaladesh asks "You think I'm gorgeous, right Hammy?" and puckers his scaly lips in an overdramatic offer of a kiss. Hamil moves to swat him aside with a heavy wood and metal hand, but Kaladesh dodges to more laughter from his comrades, their movements so easy that it seems almost choreographed. Josh said: "Stormbringer? is that some magic item of is? has he always gone by "the red king"?" "You've never heard of Stormbringer?" Ederc asks, the deurgar mage looking surprised. "He's a legendary black blade of great power and charisma, who can call down thunder and lightning." Selisa adds, "There are songs going back a thousand years telling of warriors called The Red King who wield Stormbringer. Some scholars believe that the sword helps to shape the mortals who find it to suit the title, but others think it's more of a mantle passed down. There are also tales that the Red King is a single person, immortal and ageless, though only fools believe that one." "Only gods and undead are truly immortal," Vadania Leafblade says confidently. "And warforged," Hamil puts in, his dour voice strangely inhuman. Selisa shakes her head, arguing "That's not true. Queen Lauren of Reluin is centuries old, and hasn't aged a day since the Cataclysm." "Those stories can't possibly be true," Vadania says dismissively, "The current Lauren is probably just the great granddaughter of the first one. The title is what matters, same as our lord of the Red." "And that's the heart of the question, isn't it?" Kaladesh says, shrugging. "Ol' Red's been going by the title as long as anyone's known him. Anyone still alive, anyway. You know what he says when you ask him why he took up the mantle?" "'Because I am  the Red King,'" Hamil answers, and the others nod, all well familiar with this unproductive line of questioning. Josh said: "Do you still have your lair in The hills of light? how close is it to the waypoint, the old pelor fort that is. It'll make crafting you a shrine to Astilabor easier" "Oh yeah, I still hold claim to a few of the western hills," Kaladesh says with a grin. "A few miles southwest of the Fortress. Though I only visit from time to time, when we're not campaigning." Josh said: "not really studied more as it came to me naturally after many fights, Adventuring tends to make you stronger." "That is true," Hamil says, with that strange, hollow burr to the voice generated somewhere inside his unmoving face. "No being is strong who is untested. Travel is the great equalizer, and warfare the great teacher."
There is a lot of things I have never heard off, I'm only 3 and only spent that last year out side of kalmenes territory. He would not be the first ancient shape shifter I've meet. though I do prefer the black blade brain washes people to wage war theory better.

He would not be the first ancient shape shifter I've meet. though I do prefer the black blade brain washes people to wage war theory better. "There's no denying that Stormbringer is evil," Kaladesh says confidently, "but a wielder with sufficient will can reign him in. The Red King controls Stormbringer, and uses his evil to do good." "Good, evil... such distinctions are only important to the smallfolk," Ederc says, his posture impeccable as he sips his glass of dark wine. "Our lord is strong, and only strength truly matters in this world." Vadania cuts in, "Strength and change . What Hamil said is true not only of men, but societies. The Catacombs is a nest of rot and stagnation, the three Great Powers locked in stalemate for centuries, and only the Red King has the will to change it."

Josh said: How often do you go campaigning? "We've been set to it pretty steadily for the last couple years, fighting Moonshadow," Kaladesh tells you. "We finally captured her garrison a few days ago, though the bitchqueen herself escaped. The final battle was a sight to see... once we'd fought through to her inner chambers, she starting hitting us with these terrific waves of psychic power, stunning everyone but the Red King. He pushed through them, charged her with Stormbringer, and slashed her open from shoulder to hip. He was about to deal the finishing blow, when this wall of rainbow light blasted up around her. She vanished, only leaving a ring of sigils burned into the floor." "A plane shift ," Ederc says. "It's a psionic power that powerful mindlfayers can develop. She escaped to another plane. She might come back, but it's not a very accurate spell... she could end up with a long journey home, even if she's already back on the Material Plane." "Well, in any case," Kaladesh shrugs, "It seems like we aren't done by a long-shot, now that we've gotten dragged into this war." Josh said: - I gave you a book did you want a wooden holy symbol too? But apparently not enough will to destroy an ancient evil. -which by the way is like the 7th ancient evil in these lands  Iktharlyep, Astarte , the coiled lady ..are there any old goodies around? "Sure, I'll take one. I'd never seen a proper holy symbol of Astilabor, except the one you wear," Kaladesh grins, then his expression grows more serious. "But hey, politics makes for strange bedfellows. Sometimes a harnessed evil is necessary to deal with greater evils." "I don't think the King cares about it either way," Vadania says, rolling her eyes. "He only cares about power. If he does good or evil along the way, so be it." Kaldesh adds "There are a few truly good powers in the Catacombs, like Annak--" but he's cut off by a sharp look from Selisa, her eyes suddenly very snakelike. Sense Motive and Knowledge (nobility & rotalty) apply. Abashed, Kaladesh clears his throat and says "Like, er... the Deathwalkers Guild. I've heard they're feuding with Zanzibar the Mad lately, so I'm not surprised they joined the defense against the Grizzled One. He's Zanzibar's bannerman, after all." Josh said: Beg to differ Ederc good, evil, law, and chaos are very important to the gods as well. Ederc smiles, pleased with your clever rebuttal. "But the gods have only limited power to influence our world, do they not? They can grant spells and powers to their clerics, make pacts with mortals, and hoard the souls of the dead... but many a mighty priestess has fallen beneath the strength of Stormbringer and our Red King. When a man faces death, he learns that what truly mattered was that he sought the path of greatest power." After the battle on the Orthan River, a few hours pass with no further sign of another wave coming. Kraggan patrols along the river in her giant octopoid form, mopping up survivors who got past other towers and taking more captives. Limar is able to confirm from the air that the rest of Gurak and Grizzled One's forces are withdrawing into their warcamp. As the sun rises in a red and cloudy sky, boats of other mercenaries arrive to take their shifts on watch, and conscript guards replace those in the watchboats. Your islet is manned by a human soldier named Greysha Steelborn, a dwarf named Roggek with a raven on his shoulder, and the dragon style kung fu Shifu Mu Sha Zhun of the Deathwalkers. Back in Waterwend, you're fed and healed, debriefed with Hamil, and given time to rest and recover your strength. Kraggan is granted new spells from Ehlonna, and Xankoris is able to recover sufficient magical energy to use the new spells he's been granted by the air kami. Hiskel's scribe has also finished her last 2 copies of The Eternal Hoard .  The weather grows stormy as dark clouds continue to gather during the day, soon turning to rain and then hail, with thunder rumbling and lightning cracking the sky. Over a late lunch with the Deathwalkers and Black Sabbath at The Full Net  while the winds howl outside and hail drums on the roof, you learn that the wave of enemy rafts was quite wide, passing through several other guardtower islets. "We had a lot of trouble with them at ours," Grahm tells you grimly. "Selmidra... didn't make it. One of those damned fiendish bugbears did her in." Their sorceress Polgara, dressed in somber black for a change from her usual revealing outfits, raises her glass. "To Selmidra... she could be cold at times, but she was a true friend." Garion follows suit, adding "She saved me from a ghoul once. Fucker was about to stab me in the back when she cracked him right in the head with that staff of hers." Draz Tinear does the same. "She always did her duty, and never complained of it." Grahm is the last to offer his toast, voice thick with grief. "She gave her life to save the city, and us as well. She crossed the Catacombs with us, fought with us, drank with us. She was our sister, our comrade, our friend. She lived and died a heroine. May Hanseath guide her safely on her final journey." Josh said: -any chance i could get a private audience with the red king? After lunch, you learn that the Red King is deep in council with his officers at the town hall, planning the next sortie. "We're only supposed to let anyone in if it's a matter of dire import. What is it you want to talk to him about?" the door guard asks. Josh said: -Limars goin to stop by the church of Nerule. "cade or welby this time? I've got a boat full of dead bodies waiting to be harvested if your interested in paying for their hearts an brains."  -"can you identify this" tiny skull the size of a pea"? "Wellby," Wellby Underbough tells you dryly. "Unfortunately, the organ trade is totally saturated right now. You've seen how many bodies are piling up by the funeral piers, yeah? Not to mention those floating downriver. I've had graverobbers bringing them in since yesterday. There are just too many sellers and not enough buyers. Sorry, Limar." He takes a look at the skull, though. "Hmmm... this  is something interesting, though. It's a fairy skull. In really tiny fey, the bones become crystalline after a few centuries. Once harvested, they're as valuable as precious gemstones. I'd say thus one is worth a good 60 platinum." Josh said: gather info 3,18  1 gold each looking for that clock work bug stop by merlas to see if she wants to keep the book or not. Sadly, it seems like no one's seen any sign of that clockwork bug yet. When you come in from the rain and shake off, Merla welcomes you with a mug of hot buckwheat tea. "I'm glad to see you're still alive. I heard the battles were rough last night. Some rafts of the invaders even made it ashore, though they say the soldiers on the docks stopped them." "Oh, the book? I've been looking through it a bit, it's fairly interesting so far... give me a week or so to read it fully, and I'll let you know what I think." Josh said: hiskel will ask Siwan how he learned common and if he has his own death elemental language like the other elementals. Xankoris can convey the answer that Siwan whispers in his heart: "I not use words before. Language of death elementals is not words, but life and death. But when I awakened again in Xankoris body, I knew words he knew. Common, Elven, Hànyǔ. I not know how I knew. But I knew."  Spellcraft applies.   Josh said: -wonder over to Aegisfrs " could you take a look at these frimin?" an shows her the sheild, sword and net. put those in the party loot as well as the "76 gold pieces, 128 silver pieces, 59 copper pieces, 22 strange stone coins (appraise 16)" Frimin Moonbook takes a look over the objects with her discerning eye, and casts a spell. Spellcraft applies. "Well..." she says, flipping the shield over slowly in her hands and tugging at the leather grip, "This is definitely magical. I'd need to cast an identification  spell to be sure of what it can do, but judging by the collage it has something to do with magical beasts. Look, here." She shows you the front and indicates each of the creatures painted there in turn: " Basilisk , displacer beast , frost worm , hippogriff , owlbear , roper , sea cat . All magical beasts. That can't be a coincidence. Until I'm sure of its powers, I can't give you an accurate price quote, though." Setting it aside, she runs her fingers over the sword and thorned steel net. "This short sword isn't magical, but it's definitely the work of a master smith, a bugbear unless I miss my guess. The net too. I've only seen woven steel like this a few times before; it's an extremely difficult thing to make. Far stronger than hemp or silk, almost impossible to burst out of or cut once it's caught someone. I'd say the sword is worth a good 310 gold pieces, maybe 500 for the net." The stone coins you recognize as dwarven granite coins from Highhelm, worth 3gp each. I added them to the first post of the Loot thread. As usual, you guys have a couple weeks of real time to stake claims before I split it for you.

"I'm not sure he cares much for this  town either, to be honest," Vadania says flippantly. "He just wants to fold the defeated armies into our ranks. Gurak's forces are infamously numerous... he's been gathering more and more tribes of goblinoids under his banner, united them as few of his kind ever have. Grizzled One's people are savage, but they follow him because he's a strong leader, and the Red King is stronger still. If he sees a similar opportunity in Bowhery's defense, that might be our next destination. Litheria, though... what do we know about her?" "Vindictive," Ederc supplies. "Her followers spread disease and terror, and many are more than half-mad. And she's rumored to have connections to a very powerful psion... I've heard rumors that one of her more clever followers is a dwarf named Meier who was granted some kind of psionic abilities as a reward for his service." "I doubt the Red King will wish to acquire a diseased army," Hamil says dourly. Vadania shakes her head in agreement. "He's more the type to sink a plague ship before it reaches the harbor. Some men have wills of iron; he has a will of adamantine." Josh said: - I suppose humans might think like that but when I face death I just have to decide if I want to rest or be reincarnated..or I suppose follow the path of falazure, I guess that is a privilege of the strong. "Reincarnated, eh?" Ederc replies with a grim and knowing smile. "You put much faith in your druidic leader. But there may come a dark day when she passes to the next life alongside you. Then you may wish you had sworn your sword to a stronger man." Josh said: well now whose this Annak? old crush of hers? ancient foe? family? Josh said: Just let him know Limar suggests bolstering our numbers via freeing slaves or have the church of Nerul raise some of the dead foes. Wellby shrugs, looking less put together than usual--though that's hardly a surprise, given how busy all the churches have been during the siege. "I don't even have the spare magic to preserve them. But on the plus side, Nerull seems pleased by all the deaths. I'm sure He's been busy leading them to the other side." "Falazure... the Night Dragon, right? Dragon god of decay and undeath? Now that you mention it, I recall a human priest of His visiting about a month ago. I think I recall him mentioning that he was heading northwest, up the Lithid River." The Gather Info will need to wait till the next day, though. Josh said: spellcraft 10. thats interesting, do you know everything Xankoris knows? Again, Siwan answers through Xankoris. "I not know... The mystery of it is a bit unsettling. Josh said: hiskel- Let me know when you can identify it. Josh said: I mean if you only go to war to recruit then that must be limiting, I was just thinking you'd stomp out the remaining shadow moon before they could regroup in that area. "That's the only reason we're in this  war," Vadania clarifies. "We were fighting with Moonshadow for quite a while, and never had any luck getting her grimlocks to turn cloak." Ederc points out, "She had some sort of psionic hold over them, I'm sure of it. Something deep. The ones we captured were loyal until death. I couldn't work them free of it, even with all my art." "He may have a point about Neuromancer though, we ought to finish her off," Selisa suggests. Hamil shakes his head, though. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend. It would be wiser to let Neuromancer and Litheria weaken each other before we step in. Especially now that we hold Moonshadow's territory, and neither of them can go to ground in their home turf." Leading you into the back room, she takes a seat behind a round table laden with an oddly pattened silk cloth. "But you're right. Perfect foresight is not a gift, but a curse--as rare as it is terrible. I do not bear that curse. The things I see in your future are only likelihoods, that you may still act to change. Josh said: knowledge nobility 16 +3 if catacomb related. 22 gather info,1 gold to find messengers heading northwest towards this grimgrins area if possible. You've heard of Grimgrin, a troglodyte priest of Laogzed. He's said to be a follower of Ishconn, and to lead a large troglodyte band in the northwestern Catacombs. They raid settlements up there periodically, especially in the winter time, and many of them ride great fiendish lizards. Many of his strongest followers are rumored to have a false tooth or eye made of black gemstones. The Gather Info check will need to wait till the next day. Josh said: Nice to meet you ederc. -did we get a report on the numbers gurak lost? I know the wayfinders an ice nine took out near 200. "The pleasure is all mine," Ederc replies politely, sipping his wine. Hamil drones "The last reports we recieved showed enemy losses numbering nearly 400, a very heavy blow. On our side, fewer than a hundred casualties." Ederc nods, adding "If I know the Red King, he's probably formulating a plan of counterattack now. Gurak seriously underestimated our river defenses, and the time is ripe to strike back while our numbers are more evened out." Josh said: Hiskel goes to check up on moonflower. Moonflower wasn't at lunch with the rest of her guild, but Viktor tells you that she's recuperating at the Temple of Yondalla.  Shaking the rain off your robes as you enter the Temple, you find Moonflower resting on a cot in a recovery room with other wounded soldiers. Her head is bandaged, covering her left eye, and she has bandages over wounds on her arms and torso as well. "You're sweet to come visit me," she says with a tired smile. "The priestesses have been taking good care of me, and my guildmates were all here earlier... but they're so rowdy, one of the nurses shooed them out," she laughs, then winces and holds her side where a binding wraps some broken ribs. "I think I may be out of the siege, though. These wounds will take some time to properly heal." Ritt K. said: "I like tea, guess I'll tea leaves method then." As she stokes the small fire in her stove and sets a pot of water to boil, Shendara begins to tell you about this particular method of divination. "Tasseography has its roots in the tradition of reading drops of melted wax or lead as they harden in cool water. But as sea traders from Rokugan begin to import tea to Oerik, fortune-tellers found that the more personal connection formed by the drinking helped to amplify the temporal resonance."  She sets a cup and saucer on the table in front of you, puts in a pinch of chopped, dry tea leaves, and pours in the steaming hot water to let it steep for a minute, continuing: "Much of the symbology remains from those old days, though we have refined our skill over time. Few nonmagical divinations are as potent. Haruspicy can compare well, as the lifeforce of the sacrificed beast provides great energy. Now, drink the full cup, save a few drops, and we shall see what the fates have in store for you." Once you've nearly drained the cup, Shendara draws it back across the table, swirls the last spoonful of tea three times counterclockwise, and carefully turns it over onto the saucer. She waits for the last of the tea to drain into the saucer, then flips the cup slowly back over and moves it to the center of the table so you can both peer into it at the pattern of leaves stuck to the enameled white inside. "The leaves are read starting near the handle," she explains, the glimmers of starlight moving slowly in her shadowed eyesockets. "I see a scythe just to the right of it, there... the symbol of death. But the position speaks of your present, not your future. Death walks with you." She looks up at you for a long moment, curious and unsettled, but continues with the reading. "Next is the rim, events that will occur within a week or so. I see... a cloud? or perhaps a bed... hmm. An important dream will come to you. You should pay heed to your dreams this week. There's a scroll here, too... a message, perhaps? And... what is this... a skyline? Buildings... a town aflame. Perhaps the fall of a city." She points to each of the vague patterns as she goes, working her way downwards towards the bottom of the cup. The leaves don't look like much to you, but as she describes each symbol, you can sort of see what she means, like seeing shapes in the clouds. "Further afuture, in coming weeks, I see a bolt of lightning. A storm, mayhaps. And lips with a finger across them... a secret, well-hidden. A secret hidden in a storm? How interesting. I'm not sure what to make of that. Beyond that, months ahead, I see a skull wreathed in flame. The unholy symbol of Wee Jas. A symbol of death and magic, and justice... or justice poisoned by vanity: revenge. Be twice wary of followers of Wee Jas, I think it means--one may coming seeking vengeance upon you." At last she sits back, letting out a long, slow breath. "There is much strife in your future, Xankoris. I would not wish to live such an interesting life."

Josh said: Limar wants to pick up 1 acid flask and 2 holy waters  hiskel suggests the party pays for a dismissal scroll to deal with what ever fiend gurrak summons The holy waters are easy to find, all the good-aligned churches, like the  Temple of Yondalla , are selling them at cost (plus tax) for 26gp, 2sp, 5cp each.  The acid flasks are a bit tougher. Stumbleduck's Reagents, Nostrums, & Whathaveyou  has been sold out of most offensive alchemical devices for days. Jackson's  is too, and the Caravan Market (half empty) has none left either. You hear whispers of a thriving black market for such items, though. Roll a Gather Information check to see if you can track down any sellers. And unfortunately, after speaking with Verrer Leagarrow at Verrer and Arral's Quill , you learn that the business partners have no scrolls of dismissal  in stock, and neither of them knows the spell to scribe one to order. They suggest trying the Temple of Tondalla .

"I think we all know that morale-raising is my true value," Kaladesh says jokingly, "But at the moment keeping an eye on the Stone River for a flotilla of enemy reinforcements seems to be in vogue." Verne nods, with the world-weary expression of an experienced soldier. "Our main advantage has been the natural defensive value of the Othan River. If Gurak's allies manage to flank the city from the south, we'll be caught between the hammer and the anvil. I've surveyed those walls--they won't hold against a storming force."
