Errands in Town

Xankoris accepts this deal. He also uses the time he's in Waterwend to prepare for incoming Bon festival, whether fireworks, parades, music, traditional dances, food, long twisting streamers, and more, in case he won't be here. He will also promote one of his followers to be in charge of this while he isn't here.
Dawi  said: Max  said: Roll a Spellcraft check as you read through Dreyan's notes in the following week, with a +2 for your specialization in necromancy. Spellcraft: 43 While reading the  Spellbook  Ering will use the  Amanuensis  cantrips to copy down the notes. Your cantrip copies 7 pages of Dreyan's notes on undead and related ritual magic, though it's not able to duplicate the additional 3 pages' worth of drawings (mostly of magic circle patterns, runes, and anatomical structures, though there are a few sketches of mushrooms and twisted underdark plants, and one of a man and woman in romantic embrace). You can roll some Craft (drawing) checks to copy those as well, if you like.  After thoroughly reading and analyzing the notes, you conclude that Dreyan had been researching ritual magic for summoning undead as an alternative to traditional spells. Ritual magic is a lesser known and somewhat mysterious form of divine magic, in which offerings are made to deities or demideities in return for magical effects. Generally slow and unreliable, it's unsuited for the battlefield, but can be a way for mages to access more powerful effects than they could normally produce on their own. The rituals Dreyan was experimenting with mostly involved making living sacrifices to various archdevils in return for their aid in conjuring or reanimating undead under her control, more or less replicating an animate dead  spell. From the level the spells in this book, that spell would likely have been well beyond her abilities at the time she owed it... though from what you've heard of the golgari, they may well be a result of much more powerful ritual magic. If you can learn the details of the secret magic she's using to create and control them, what you've gathered here should help you (+4 bonus on a check) to dispel it. They provide you with a sealed and arcane marked  letter to show any merchants as necessary verifying that their shop can be billed for expenses, and trust you to keep it under the limit of 200pp. "From what I've heard of you, you're a man of your word," Verrer says with a smile. The Bon Festival is in Reaping, which was last month--with all the rushing to finish your spells and the chaos of the war, you must have forgotten about it. The next upcoming Rokugani holiday will be  Choyo no Sekku , the Chrysanthemum Festival, about 4 weeks from now in early Harvester. Do you want to prepare for that instead?
"Of course, I am, thank you for this fund," Xankoris said with a bow. After being embarrassed by the fact that he focused too much on the war that he forgot Bon festival, Xankoris decides to redeem himself by preparing this festival instead.
Ering copies the drawings and, inspired by Dreyan and the other possessor of the book, creates an Arcane Mark with his name on the cover.  Craft (drawing): 25

Roll Gather Information to find all the supplies, performers, and workers you'll need. You get a +2 circumstance bonus for already having made similar preparations for the Seven Festivals of the Kami. One of your converts who cares for the Shrine of Isora and the Thousand Fortunes , a human named Emory ,  has begun training as an acolyte shugenja, though he is a long way yet from mastering even the most basic magics of your traditions. He would probably be the most suitable one to put in charge of overseeing the festivities.
Can I roll it when Xankoris got to Treefall later? Xankoris tells Emory how this festival work and what he need and should do. "I know it might be a hard task for you, but I chose you because I think you can do it," Xankoris added. (Diplomacy check: 23)
Before Xankoris goes to Treefall, he'll find a place that sells finger of jade to stave off possible additional taint.
Is it possible for Ering to fit a quick visit to Bowhery to return the spellbook before leaving for Kenwing or will he have to teleport there?

Ering announces at the Waypoint that he is going to take a brief trip to Bowhery and that it shouldn't take him more than a day. He asks if someone else has business in the city and wants to come with. He takes a few breaths and stands still outside the Waypoint, gripping his staff. His mind is filled with images of the battle of Bowhery but he is not focusing on the javelins whizzing past his head or the sounds of battle or the numerous casualties. He sees the gates, now closed and then open, he sees the patches of grass and remembers every incline in the area, how the dirt was stomped by by the foot soldiers and the lizard-folk hordes and then trampled the the Red King's cavalry. He remembers the following days, how that spot became a temporary camp for his soldiers and himself.  He closes his eyes and whispers a short incantation ending with the draconic words for " Instant " and " Travel ". For just a single moment the world seems to fold and collapse on itself, but as soon as Ering opens his eyes he finds himself in the outskirts of Bowhery. [First Teleport  roll: 48] He heads to Riverbrook Pawn, waves to Merla and puts the spellbook on the counter. "It has been a pleasure" Ering smiles.  "If you ever come across something similar know that I am always interested and that I will visits every so often. Perhaps you could leave a note for me at the The Pilgrim & The Cauldron." [I already rolled the second Teleport check for the day after, successful with 44]

He tells you that Meilin Zhongshan is known to wear a lot of jade jewelry, and has a standing order for any of the rare stone that comes through Waterwend's port, but insists you didn't hear it from him . "I see, thank you." then Xankoris takes leave. What's the day there? If it's in 5 days, Xankoris will wait for her at the Church of Nerull. If not, he'll fly to Treefall instead.

It's Earthday, Goodmonth 13th. The next Godsday is indeed in 5 days, on Goodmonth 18th: your birthday. What do you do in the meantime?

So now he's just doing what Shugenja do at  Shrine of Isora and the Thousand Fortunes,  teaching, cleaning, and praying, etc. A handful of petitioners come each day to give offerings or pray for good weather, most of them sailors. Two days into your wait, on Starday, you're sweeping the steps of the Shrine  when the kami smile upon you: a beautiful woman of Rokugani descent walks through the torii and past you to kneel in prayer at the altar. She wears a black silk  qipao  of exceptionally fine quality, embroidered with lónɡ dragons in cloth-of-gold thread. Jade teardrops dangle from her ears, and orbs of jade adorn her fine golden rings. You can see intricate black patterns of curved, sharp lines tattooed over the back of right hand and fingers. Despite her elegant movements and aristocratic posture, she exudes the innate power and confidence of an extremely dangerous person, though she carries no visible weapons, only a small clutch purse. Knowledge (nobility & royalty) and Spot apply. By the way, how much did you spend on preparations for the Chrysanthemum Festival? On the afternoon of Goodmonth 18th, Ering, Leoavor, Kraggan, and Axil (the disguised Triss) arrive in Waterwend . Your helmsman Rich wishes you luck and takes the Lady's Lace  back down the Stone River , as you look for disguises and hire a coach to Kentwing .

Diplomacy: 25 From her attire and personal power, you suspect this is Meilin Zhongshan, the infamous hidden boss of Waterwend. You've also heard rumors that she's connected to the white dragoness Astarte, one of the three Great Powers. If she is  one of Zhongshan family of the northeastern Kingdom of Provincia, she must possess their mysterious secret power, the  Yǐngxì . In your heart, Siwan whispers "She is another one like us... there is something attached to her, or she is split into two halves. I cannot be sure which. It is like a terrible shadow inside her, waiting to emerge."  He sounds a little afraid, a rarity for the death elemental. She rises with easy grace, giving you a slight smile. "My name is Zhongshan Meilin. And from your attire, I would hazard a guess that you are Asahina Xankoris," she answers in fluent Hànyǔ, with a small nod at your Wayfinders badge. Her manner is so utterly familiar that for a moment you forget you're in Terolus--she acts and speaks exactly like the people of your homeland, and must certainly be a PBR (Provincian-Born Rokugani) like you.

Ritt K. said: "That's right, Lady Zhongshan. Nonetheless, I only ever have heard of you, but I never expected you to be this  glamorous ." Diplomacy check: 30 Her smiles widens a little at your flattery, but still doesn't show teeth. "You are too kind, Asahina. And so hard-working. I have been very impressed with this Shrine ... although I am publically devoted to Nerull, it is wonderful to be able to properly offer my prayers to the gods of our homeland." Her gaze lingers on your eyes for a long moment, and her smile fades as she seems to notice the splotches there. "You have the Taint," she says flatly, still in Hànyǔ. "The great curse of our people. Did you not have any jade to keep it at bay?"
Xankoris' face and voice become depressing, "Yes, I do. I was too negligent because I thought this place is too far from Shadowland influence, yet I was wrong. This stain is a mark of my greatest mistake which I want to undo." He slightly bends his head down, "I have been trying to search nothing but a finger of jade and still unable to found." Xankoris then turns to Meilin and look at her eyes, "Until I found you, Lady Zhongshan, you are the first person who has what I want, can you tell me where did you get it? So I can avert the step to ruination."

So I can avert the step to ruination." She smiles again, but more gently this time. "You are not the first to make this mistake. Growing up, we learn that the Taint is born only of the Shadowlands of Rokugan , but that is a misconception--it is a vulnerability of all Rokugani peoples, no matter where we travel. Great evils of any kind can awaken it if one is not careful. That's why I buy up all the jade that comes through Waterwend's Docks ." She reaches up to one of her earrings, slipping it off with a precise but effortless motion, and pressing it into your hand: a single finger's worth of jade. "My gift to you. Consider it a token my friendship and gratitude, for all you have done for Waterwend ." She glances around at the Shrine  meaningfully. Sense Motive applies. "And I have a second gift as well: a piece of advice. I have heard that there is a guardian naga in the Catacombs who learned the ritual to cleanse a Taint from his distant Rokugani cousins. His name is Carnasi the Golden. If you can find him, perhaps he can help to cure you entirely." Knowledge (nobility & royalty) and (dungeoneering) apply.

Then Xakoris looks at the sky, "My-my, time sure flies as always," he smiles mellowy. "Sorry for bothering you, I shall continue cleaning now. May our path cross again, Lady Zhongshan." After a slight bow, Xankoris goes back to sweeping the steps again.

After a slight bow, Xankoris goes back to sweeping the steps again. You know that the nagas of Oerik are distant relatives of Rokugani naga, but very different. The various breeds here have wildly different natures, and are all shaped more or less like giant serpents with human-ish faces. You're not sure what makes guardian nagas distinct from the other Oerikian naga races, though. "I would be most pleased to see that," she accepts with a smile. "I recall the shows you arranged for the Seven Festivals of the Kami last month. They were quite wonderful. It is lovely to see such a public representation of our homeland's traditions in this country."  She takes the cue easily, nodding in return--a sign that she considers you her inferior, but not by too large a gap. Considering the level of power she exudes, this isn't an unreasonable estimation. "It was no bother at all. I wish you the best of fortune in recovering from your infirmity, and hope to see you soon again as well," she says in Hànyǔ. With a friendly "Zàijiàn!" she departs, disappearing into the bustle of the city streets.

While cleaning, Xankoris thought, 'Attached to her? Terrible Shadow? That must be either Dragon spells from Phoenix or Nothingness spell  from Scorpion. But considering she's Yakuza boss, and Scorpions are likely to work in the shadow, that might also be a new spell I never heard of before. Well, Siwan, as Taoist said, 'a black heart hides many secrets. The blackest heart hides the deadliest secret of all,' I only hope she'll be able to find the enlightenment. If not, I'll have to show her peace.'
Also, the next day, Xakoris flies to Treefall.

You arrive in Treefall late in the day on Goodmonth 16th. After the endless bustle of Waterwend , the elven town is a welcome respite, peaceful and even more beautiful. The Stone River War has only helped this settlement prosper, it seems, likely thanks to the surging flow of coin into the coffers of its infamous Assassins Guild.  "This is where I was born..."  Siwan murmurs in your heart, with a sense of wonder. "Everything looks... bigger... than I remember."

Siwan, even smarter now than he was the last time they worked together on a project, is a great help in this effort, the death elemental at home in the realm of nothingness. "Oh nine hells, I forgot it was Godsday," Leoavor grumbles, smacking himself in the forehead. "They take it pretty seriously in  Waterwend , too... halflings call it Safeday, and almost none of them work. Only the taverns and restaurants will be open, and all the churches will be busy." Indeed, from main street you can hear the noise of the crowds around the  Temple of Yondalla . "I guess we'd better get a room and shop tomorrow. I usually stay at  The Otterman , nicest hotel in town. I think you guys would like it," the half-elf suggests. "We can swing by the magic shops tomorrow too. For scrolls, you want  Verrel and Arral's Quill . People say the two women who run it are secretly lovers, but I think that might just be a rumor.  Ziged's Wands  has, well, magic wands. I've only been there once or twice, his snake familiar kind of makes me uncomfortable. The rest you'd be most likely to find at the miscellaneous magic item shop,  Ryelly's Wondrous Vault . Ryelly's one of the few magic shop owners who doesn't know any magic himself, he's just an experienced merchant." The Otterman  turns out to be a five-story marble building, once of the nicest you've seen in town. The concierge welcomes Leoavor back, and comps a suite for your party. This might be surprising, if Leoavor and Kraggan hadn't been getting friendly waves and cheers, or being stopped for autographs or to get get free samples of street foods and flowers from children, all the way through the town. The Wayfinders are even bigger celebrities here than in  Bowhery , it seems, and most everyone treats them like local heroes. Quite a few people ask you and "Axil" if you're new members of the guild, and some tell you they expect great things from you. The next day is the 19th, so Leoavor guides you and Triss into  Waterwend's  large  Red Light District  to a shop called  Calbert's Crossbow & Pawn , where a rough-looking middle aged tallfellow halfling man helps you find some old clothing and other oddments for disguises. He seems like the discreet sort who won't go blabbing about what his customers buy. The total costs ends up at 19 gold pieces, 7 silver pieces, and 5 copper pieces. Leoavor puts in 5 gold towards the total. Then he shows you two to the magic shops he mentioned yesterday, to take a look at what's in stock. Ritt K.  said: Knowledge (the planes) check: 16 You find a book in the shelves titled  The Kaiu Wall and the Abyss , written in Hànyǔ. It has a lot of information about the  Kaiu Wall  and the  Shadowlands  of  Rokugan , most of which you already knew from stories your grandparents told you as a child. However, it seems to be written from the perspective of an Oerikian scholar, and goes into more detail about the role of the  Shadowlands  in the larger multiverse.  According to this tome, the  Shadowlands  are actually a 'thin place' where the evil outer planes bleed into the  Material Plane , especially  The Infinite Layers of the Abyss , realm of demons and chaos. The author believes that the unique properties of the  Shadowlands  (such as the presence of  oni  and other demons rarely found outside it) are a result of the particular magical nature of  Rokugan  interacting with the evil coming in from the outer planes. He posits that many Rokugani demons, such as  akuma no oni , are actually 'normal' demons who were altered by their entry into  Rokugan , or perhaps that only those varieties of demons are drawn to the places where their planes bleed into  Rokugan . The author also believes that the Taint is not a condition unique to the  Shadowlands , but rather to Rokugani people themselves. He describes several case studies where individuals of Rokugani descent living in Oerik became Attainted by exposure to powerful evil creatures or magics that were not, in themselves, associated with or common in  Rokugan . He hypothesizes that someone without Rokugani blood would  not  become Attainted by exposure to the Shadowlands, but laments that he has not been able to find any evidence to support this guess. The only information you can find about curing the Taint in the book is that there are two known methods: one is a very rare spell used by the strange half-humanoid nagas of  Rokugan , the other is direct divine intervention. The author mentions various legends of people being purged of the Taint as a reward by their gods for great deeds, but says that such legends should be taken with grain a salt. Ritt K.  said: "Hello, I,m looking for some jade, do you have any?" "Hmm..." Thoraxe considers, "I think I might, as a matter of fact..." He rummages through a rusty iron coffer beneath his counter, and finds a small, cloudy green stone. It looks like about one finger's worth, by Rokugani measure. "I'd say it's worth about 84 gold." Ritt K.  said: Spellcraft check: 16 "Did you feel what I felt, Siwan?" "If you want more mundane ones, try Chancy's Chandlery . Chancy mostly has all sorts of candles, but I think she also sells the fragrant oils and perfumes she uses to make some of the fancy ones." Your group is welcomed into Verrer and Arral's Quill  by a tallfellow halfling woman in long robes. "Welcome back, Leoavor. I see you brought some friends," she says with a smile, offering Ering and Triss genteel handshakes. "I'm Arral Highill. What can I help you with today?" The shop is small to Ering's eyes, being used to the vast variety of a metropolis like Skyshroud . To Triss--living most of his life either cloistered in his birth home or in the small town of Kentwing --it seems impressive for one shop to have so many magic scrolls, though in reality there can't be more than 20 or so in the slots along the wall behind the counter. Atop that low counter, a beautiful bengal cat sleeps peacefully in a belly-up sprawl. On the crossed planks that make up the slots (sort of like a wine rack), a small piece of slate is glued beneath each slot. The ones with scrolls in them have words written in Common using white chalk: A burning hands, D hold person, A cure light wounds, A feather fall, A protection from chaos, A glitterdust, D purify food and drink, A obscure object, D reduce animal, A illusory wall, A fire trap, A fox's cunning, A power word disable, D blindness/deafness, D ironwood, A protection from evil, D soften earth and stone jump barkskin. (12,13,31 Omg, I rolled so bad) You reach out into the Void a second time that day, searching for your unseen, unknown enemy... but somewhere in the nothingness, you lose the trail. They must be too far away. After three tries, you finally feel one of your divination  spells make contact with an ancestor. What question do you ask of them? Remember, the spell can provide you with a useful piece of advice in reply to a question concerning a specific goal, event, or activity that is to occur within one week.

"Where and how to find the person or thing that just tried to reach us but ended in the failed attempt?" You pray and meditate over the incense, burning a silvered feather to draw in the spirits of the air... You descend into a deep quiet, and at last your eyes open, glowing with a soft blue light. A different voice speaks from your lips, from across time and worlds; hard and proud, with no room for anything but honor. "I am Daidoji Takeji, and I have heard your plea for a fair fight. The one who sought to spy upon you is not your true foe, only a hidden blade within his sleeves. But beware: if he draws that blade, a Storm of destruction shall rain upon the cities you protect. You must strike down your foe in a single blow, before he can summon this Storm against you." The magic fades, and you are yourself once more.
Xankoris thought, 'Another ancestor? seem like I have a big family tree after all. Anyway, a hidden blade that will destroy the city? That's not good, I have to find him as fast as possible.' At the end of the day, Xankoris buys 4 sets of components for his Divination spell. In the next day, he also uses Sense Void to find that person. (Spot check: 18)

"This is similar: most of the work -much like the firmament- is already done, you just need to fill in the right spaces to get the whole picture." "Some magical tattoos are more visually impressive, growing teeth, wings or even weapons... But I'm not really a fan of flashy incantations." Ering stops Arral with a wave of his hand. "Maybe later, our funds are not infinite and I wouldn't want to end our nice stroll through the town so soon."
